Perinatal Mental Health Disorders in Indonesia: A Systematic Review of QuantitativeStudies (2015–2024)
Perinatal mental health disorders, especially depression and anxiety, are prevalent among women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Indonesia. These conditions can affect both maternal well-being and child development. This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesize key risk factors associated with perinatal mental health disorders among women in Indonesia. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar for quantitative studies published between 2015 and 2024. Inclusion criteria included studies involving pregnant or postpartum women in Indonesia, using quantitative designs, and reporting on risk factors for depression and/or anxiety. The review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Data extraction and screening were conducted manually by reviewers. Out of 434 identified records, six studies met inclusion criteria. Most employed cross-sectional designs and focused on sociodemographic, psychosocial, obstetric, and psychological factors. Common risk factors included young maternal age, low education, unstable employment, lack of social support, and history of mental illness. Several studies also identified low mental health literacy and poor maternal-fetal attachment as contributing factors. The included studies were mostly cross-sectional, limiting causal inference. This review highlights the need for routine mental health screening, greater provider training, and community-based interventions in maternal health care. Future research should prioritize longitudinal designs and assess the effectiveness of policy implementation
Development of a Smartphone Application “Family Care Stunting” to Increase the Independence of Families with Stunting Toddlers and Comorbid Diseases
Stunting is a complex public health problem in Indonesia. The incidence of stunting in Kudus City was 3,601 toddlers (5.85%), with the highest prevalence in Dawe District (13.32%), Undaan District (11.13%), Gebog District (10.66%), and 238 children under five, accompanied by comorbidities such as acute respiratory tract infections (ARI), diarrhea, tuberculosis (TB), and worms. One of the determining factors for success in combating stunting is family independence in managing the health of toddlers. However, family independence is constrained by limited access to information, lack of balanced nutrition education, sanitation, personal hygiene, symptoms of comorbidities, monitoring and development of toddlers not routinely, non-compliance with immunization and treatment. Smartphone applications can be used to overcome these obstacles. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of the “Family Care Stunting” smartphone application in improving the health independence of families of stunted toddlers with comorbidities. This study used a research and development design, with 201 respondents from families of stunted toddlers who had comorbidities. Effectiveness was analyzed using the Wilcoxon nonparametric differential test to compare the level of family health independence before and after the intervention. There was a significant increase in the level of family health independence after the intervention of the “Family Care Stunting” smartphone application (p-value = 0.000). This application has the potential to be an innovative tool that supports families to play an active role in child health management, thereby contributing to more comprehensive stunting prevention and handling efforts
The Coastal Abrasion Mitigation Using Permeable Structure at The Sipora Island
Abrasion is the beach erosion process due to destructive waves and currents, which are sometimes difficult to handle. The abrasion is caused by current, tidal, wind, and the earthquake and tsunami, 2010. Sipora Island is a world tourist destination for snorkeling, diving, and surfing. This research was conducted to mitigate abrasion at Sipora using a submerged permeable structure. The method is a quantitative analysis using permeable structure, WQC TOAA, current meter, and sediment trap. The field survey was conducted in August and October 2020 using purposive sampling at Kampung Dusun, Tua Pejat, The Sipora Island. The results show that the permeable structure can reduce the abrasion, current, and wave pressure and increase sedimentation at Kampung Dusun. The abrasion rate is 3.73 m/year or 268 m2/year, classified as very high (CVI). Sedimentation is created behind the permeable structure, whose rate is 9.389 cm3/day, sea current is 0.02-0.08 m/s (reduced till 50%), and wave pressure is 0.375 KN/m2 (decreased 62.5%). For seawater quality, the pH and turbidity are increased; TDS and salinity are relatively stable at some points, but the pH and temperature of the dissolved oxygen are decreased. The permeable structure can reduce abrasion and create sedimentation at Kampung Dusun, Sipora
The Role of Family in the Socio-Economic Resilience of Former Drug Dealers in Aceh
This study examines the role of families in the socio-economic resilience of former drug dealers in Ujong Pacu, Lhokseumawe city. In many cases, former drug dealers return to drug dealers after they are released from prison. However, in Ujong Pachu, former drug dealers are able to survive not returning to become drug dealers even though they often receive persuasive invitations and threats to return to being active in drug networks. This study aims to find the role of families in the socio-economic resilience of ex-drug dealers in Ujong Pacu, which can be used as a reference for the transformation process of ex-drug dealers in other regions, especially in Indonesia. Data collection was carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGD) and the use of documents. The results of this study show that since 2015, collective efforts in Gampong Ujong Pacu to eradicate drugs through collaboration between community leaders, Teungku Dayah, local government and family roles have succeeded in creating a safer environment by breaking the chain of drug spread and supporting social recovery. Rehabilitation programs, job provision, and emotional support play an important role in the integration of former dealers into society. However, challenges remain, especially in terms of financial stability and social support for individuals who are still struggling, demonstrating the need for a more holistic and sustainable approach
Patronage, Power, and Livelihood Dispossession: A Political Ecology of Coal Extraction in East Kalimantan
East Kalimantan’s rural frontier has become a key arena of Indonesia’s dual extractive economy, where coal mining and oil-palm plantations intersect to reshape village life. In Long Beleh Modang Village, overlapping concessions, uncontrolled land clearing, and weak state regulation have produced a “common problem” of ecological degradation and livelihood precarity: forests are fragmented, rivers polluted, and customary tenure eroded. Communities that once relied on forest and river resources face declining access to natural capital, deepening economic dualism, and growing dependence on informal patronage networks. Against this background, this article investigates how the combined expansion of coal and oil-palm industries transforms rural livelihood structures and reconfigures local power relations. Using a qualitative case-study design—comprising in-depth observation, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions—the study applies the Sustainable Livelihoods Analysis (SLA) framework not as a full livelihood assessment, but specifically to explain how extractivism drives structural inequality and erodes community livelihood capitals (natural, physical, human, social, and financial). Political-ecology concepts complement this analysis to reveal the power dynamics behind dispossession. The findings show a shift from adaptive to coping strategies, marked by land fragmentation, heightened informal labor, and declining access to natural resources. Agrarian conflict is intensified by overlapping tenure claims and the absence of participatory land governance. An emergent system of extractive patronage, where local elites broker access to corporate resources, reinforces economic inequality and social exclusion. By demonstrating how SLA illuminates the structural erosion of livelihood assets under extractive pressure, this study contributes to debates on extractive governance and rural sustainability, underscoring the urgency of equity-oriented, community-based governance and participatory spatial planning
Red, White, Rain, and Packaged Water: Adaptive Strategies to Clean Water Scarcity in Kepulauan Meranti’s Outermost Islands, Indonesia
Peat communities in Kepulauan Meranti face clean water scarcity and the lack of a national clean water supply system. We aim to observe local adaptation strategies in response to locally available water resources. We examined two villages (Lukun and Beting) and a city (Kota Selat Panjang), and ethnicities (indigenous Orang Akit, Malay, and Tionghoa) and problems concerning clean water scarcity. We conducted participatory observations and in-depth interviews for two months. We gathered data on water sources, perceptions regarding causes of water scarcity, and adaptation strategies. There are four local water sources. They are peat water (red water), borewell water (white water), rainwater, and packaged water. The perceived quality of these sources is influenced by environmental, religious, cultural, and economic values, affecting each ethnic group’s adaptation strategies. Rainwater is perceived as a clean source accessible to all, but differs in practices to access depending on economic condition. Peat water or rhedang water is perceived differently among the ethnic groups; Orang Akit relies on peat water and perceives it as freely available clean water. The Orang Akit demonstrated notable adaptability to peat water, but they are the most vulnerable community due to limited livelihood. The other two ethnic groups have more access to rainwater and perceive peat water as clean as rainwater. Adaptation to water scarcity in peatland differs in ethnic groups depending on their values and livelihoods
ANALYZING THE INTERACTION OF CITIZENSHIP, PHILANTHROPY, AND STATE RELATIONS IN THE SOCIOCULTURAL CONTEXT
This study set out to investigate how the state and its citizens create their connection under the framework of philanthropy. In order to identify the pattern of interactions between the public, the government, and the charitable movement, this study employed a grounded theory methodology. The study\u27s findings suggested that, in terms of the state\u27s constitutionally imposed duties to its citizens, aiding their welfare—which the state actively pursued—was not so much philanthropy as it was an obligation to the people. The argument we could make was that the government, philanthropic institutions, and citizens should work together to establish a complementary meeting point. This is because the government is responsible for attending to the basic needs of the community, while foreign philanthropic institutions concentrate on empowering other domains, like advocacy
Methodological System of Professional Training of Future Physics Teachers in the Process of Teaching the Course “Molecular Physics”
In the context of digitalizing the educational process for training future physics teachers, enhancing the methodological component of the “Molecular Physics” course in higher education institutions of Kazakhstan is crucial. This study aims to develop and implement a methodological system for the professional training of future physics teachers through the “Molecular Physics” course. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, including both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. The study justifies the theoretical need for reorganizing the methodological system and explores the potential benefits of the proposed methodology in enhancing the study of “Molecular Physics” among students in Kazakhstan’s higher education institutions. Data were gathered through pre- and post-tests, surveys, and a controlled experiment involving 162 participants, divided into experimental and control groups. The study outlines pedagogical conditions essential for the successful implementation of this methodology, including developing motivation among future teachers, improving teaching methodologies, and utilizing effective digital technologies. It recommends implementing this methodology through controlled tasks for independent study, employing both traditional and non-traditional teaching methods, organizing various forms of independent student work, establishing a clear scoring system, and providing feedback through innovative assessment methods. The research introduces a structural and content model for professional training that consists of three interrelated components: methodological, content-activity, and criterion-evaluation. The practical value of this work lies in its updated methodological system, which is grounded in practical methods and technologies aimed at improving the study of physics in higher education institutions in Kazakhstan. This approach not only enhances the educational process but also aligns with the evolving demands of digital education
DigitalWIV-S: Enhancing Students’ Inquiry Skills and Digital Literacy in PCR and Electrophoresis for Sustainable Education
Digital-based learning can mediate technical barriers and create a support system that enhances the effectiveness of education. This study aims to develop biology learning media, DigitalWIV-S, to enhance the inquiry skills and digital literacy of prospective science teachers. The development method follows Hannafin & Peck\u27s model, which includes the phases of Needs Assessment, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The research findings indicate that DigitalWIV-S, as a biology learning media, is deemed appropriate and received positive feedback from students. The evaluation of digital literacy is excellent across cognitive, affective, and conative aspects. Students\u27 inquiry skills are very good in problem orientation and data collection; however, abilities in problem formulation, hypothesis structuring, data analysis, and summarizing are categorized as moderate among the students. The developed media for the PCR and Electrophoresis concepts help students understand these topics better, thereby enhancing their inquiry skills and digital literacy. Additionally, the media addresses the limitations of equipment and materials in modern biotechnology practicums
Education for Sustainable Development Based on Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Biology Education: Assessing Teachers\u27 Readiness
Teachers’ readiness to integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) plays a pivotal role in preparing students to understand and practice sustainable living. This study examined the readiness of 232 in-service biology teachers in South Sumatra, comprising 142 novice teachers (with ≤10 years of experience) and 90 experienced teachers (with>10 years of experience). A descriptive-comparative quantitative design was employed, using two structured questionnaires to measure teachers’ perspectives on ESD and their Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). Findings revealed that teachers generally showed a strong commitment to ESD but only a moderate conceptual understanding. Within TPACK, attitudes were rated the highest, whereas technological and inquiry-based competencies were rated the lowest. Novice teachers scored higher than experienced teachers, while participation in environmental education training or prior teaching experience in related topics improved readiness. This study highlights the importance of continuous professional development in enhancing teachers’ technological and inquiry-oriented capacities. Strengthening these dimensions is crucial for effectively embedding ESD into biology teaching and science education more broadly. By addressing these gaps, the integration of ESD can move beyond awareness toward transformative learning that equips students with the skills and dispositions needed for sustainable futures
