Utopia Of a Classless Society In Roald Dahl\u27s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Marxist Study

    No full text
This study addresses the problem of how Roald Dahl\u27s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory reflects the dynamics of class struggle and the concept of a classless society through a Marxist perspective. The analysis employs a Marxist literary criticism framework to examine the narrative\u27s portrayal of socioeconomic themes, focusing on the symbolic representation of the chocolate factory as a site of production and class interaction. The findings reveal that while the narrative suggests a meritocratic shift in power and advocates for moral integrity over wealth, it simultaneously exposes the underlying contradictions of a classless society. The presence of the Oompa-Loompas highlights the persistence of labor exploitation, questioning the authenticity of the proposed utopia and indicating that the narrative reinforces rather than fully resolves capitalist ideologies. The study concludes that Dahl\u27s work, while promoting ideals of social mobility and equity, ultimately fails to achieve the Marxist vision of class eradication. Instead, it presents a diluted form of capitalism, masked as a fantasy, which invites critical reflection on the limitations of children\u27s literature in addressing complex social issues

    No full text
This study aims to know the types and analyze the functions of derivational and inflectional morphemes contained in Kamala Harris\u27 speech. The researcher uses qualitative method with descriptive approach to analyze the data. The data analyzed in this research are derivational and inflectional morphemes that appear in Kamala Harris\u27 speech transcripts, which were obtained by transcribing her speeches and identifying relevant words containing these morphemes. The researcher acts as the main instrument in this research. The data were collected by downloading the speech video, transcribing the speech, identifying words containing derivational and inflectional morphemes, classifying them into their respective types, and analyzing their functions. At the end of the analysis, the researcher draws conclusions based on the types and functions of the derivational and inflectional morphemes used. The findings reveal that a total of 330 words contain derivational and inflectional morphemes, consisting of 120 derivational morphemes and 213 inflectional morphemes. The derivational morphemes were categorized into nine types; 20 adjectives to noun, 19 nouns to adjective, 25 verbs to noun, 1 noun to verb, 17 verbs to adjective, 1 adjective to verb, 17 adjectives to adverb, 6 adjectives to adjective, and 14 nouns to noun. In terms of function, these derivational morphemes contributed to 59 noun formation, 42 adjective formation, 2 verb formation, and 17 adverb formation. The inflectional morphemes were classified into seven types; 110 plural, 46 past tense, 23 third person singular present, 16 past participle, 6 progressive form, 6 possessive, and 6 superlatives. The inflectional functions are 110 function as plural, 46 as past tense, 23 as third-person singular present, 16 as past participle, 6 as progressive, 6 as possessive, and 6 as superlative. The researcher concludes that derivational morphemes play a role in the formation of new word classes, while inflectional morphemes serve to indicate grammatical aspects such as number, time, and possession. These two types of morphemes not only clarify the grammatical structure but also enrich the vocabulary in English, which ultimately improves the clarity of communication

Implementation of QR-based treasure hunt game to improve young students’ English vocabulary mastery

    No full text
This study explores the effectiveness of a QR-based Treasure Hunt game in enhancing English vocabulary mastery among 7th grade students at a public junior high school located in Ungaran, a district in Semarang Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. Despite the growing interest in gamification and mobile-assisted learning, the use of QR codes specifically for vocabulary acquisition in EFL classrooms has received little scholarly attention—underscoring the need for targeted investigation in this area. Using a quasi-experimental design, students were divided into control and experimental groups, with vocabulary mastery assessed through pre-test and post-test evaluations. The control group, which followed traditional teaching methods, showed minimal vocabulary improvement, whereas the experimental group demonstrated significant gains after engaging with the QR-based gamified approach. The interactive nature of QR codes encouraged active participation, allowing students to scan, solve, and engage with challenges in a structured format. The findings confirm that gamified learning fosters engagement, reinforcing Cognitive Load Theory by breaking vocabulary learning into manageable, interactive components. While most students responded positively, observations revealed that some required additional guidance, highlighting the need for structured instructional support when implementing gamification. This study contributes to the field of educational technology, demonstrating the potential of gamification in language acquisition and student motivation. By integrating QR-based activities into EFL instruction, schools can modernize teaching practices, improving both learning outcomes and engagement. Future research should explore long-term retention, learner diversity, and expanded gamification models to further refine technology-enhanced vocabulary instruction

Using Edpuzzle interactive video to enhance listening skills

    No full text
Listening comprehension is one of the most essential yet challenging skills in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Despite its importance as a foundation for developing other language skills, listening often receives less instructional emphasis than grammar or vocabulary. Traditional listening instruction tends to be passive and lacks real-time feedback or learner control. This study reviews and explores the potential of Edpuzzle, an interactive video platform, to address these issues by offering pedagogical features aligned with multimedia learning principles. Grounded in Mayer\u27s (2009) Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, this study employs an integrative literature review method to synthesize relevant research published between 2015 and 2025. Findings from previous studies show that Edpuzzle enhances students\u27 engagement, listening comprehension, and learning autonomy through features like embedded quizzes, self-paced playback, and immediate feedback. However, challenges remain, including limited infrastructure, teacher readiness, and familiarity with digital tools. The study concludes that Edpuzzle holds significant promise for transforming conventional listening instruction into a more interactive, reflective, and learner-centered process. This article contributes theoretically by reviewing and exploring how Edpuzzle aligns with current educational paradigms and suggests future empirical research and classroom application directions

In this research, the author discussed the use of YouTube videos in the class, focusing on students’ English speaking skills. Observations and interviews were conducted to gain data regarding the use of YouTube in supporting students’ speaking skills. Two teachers and ten students were interviewed to gain deeper information. The author discovered that the teachers chose the videos based on the chapter and materials that were going to be taught, and the YouTube channel provides suitable materials. The students were way more enthusiastic during the class using audiovisual media compared to any class without audiovisual media. When asked about the media, the students stated that the animations were appealing and they gain new vocabulary through the use of the media, which made them gain interests in learning new vocabulary and how to pronounce words correctly. According to the teachers, changes in students’ speaking skill appeared during the class. Students often struggled with pronunciation and they showed improvements when this media was used in the class. They stated that the clear pronunciations from the videos helped the students to learn the accurate pronunciations.

Logical fallacies in EFL students\u27 undergraduate argumentative writing

    No full text
Argumentative essays were an important part of learning English as a foreign language (EFL) because this genre of writing not only developed language skills but also engaged students in critical thinking. Although grammar and structure was usually the main focus, students often overlooked the sense of logic in their arguments, especially the fallacies or reasoning errors. To address this gap, the researcher used qualitative research to identify the types of logical errors made by EFL students in their argumentative essays at a public university in Semarang and the underlying causes of those fallacies that occurred. A systematic content analysis method based on Mayfield\u27s taxonomy was used to identify types of logical fallacies that categorized into four board categories, manipulation through language, emotion, distraction, and inductive fallacy. Students\u27 argumentative writing was analyzed, and semi-structured interviews were conducted to understand the patterns that implied the causes of logical fallacies. The findings demonstrated that most of the EFL students’ arguments in argumentative writing were influenced by the limitations in their thinking abilities, emotional reasoning, insufficient explicit instruction in critical thinking, and superficial peer feedback. Students also showed a tendency to simplify complex issues, which was evident from the consistent usage of hasty generalizations and false dilemmas in their essays. Based on these findings, it is essential to introduce the knowledge of logical reasoning and assess the credibility and reliability of reasons and evidences that are incorporated in English argumentative writing courses, which would significantly enhance students\u27 critical thinking skills in learning about argumentation. As a result, these findings should be taken into account by educators who aim to equip EFL students with the critical thinking skills that are necessary for constructing a well-structured argument

Death Rituals and Social Critique: A Pragmastylistic Analysis of Ernaux’s La place and Une femme

    No full text

    No full text

    No full text
