Demographic Factors and BMI on Declined Lung Function and Vitamin D Levels in Active Smokers
Cigarettes are one of the causes of health problems in the world. Smoking has been known to have a direct impact on reducing lung function. Smoking increases the risk of vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is a vital nutrient as a lung immunomodulator. Deficient levels will cause problems with lung health, especially in active smokers. This cross-sectional research using multivariate path analysis and the SEM-PLS method has three objectives. The direct influence of three independent variables, including obesity, smoking, and demographics. Regarding vitamin D status and lung function, analyzing the direct effect of vitamin D on lung function, and thirdly, analyzing the indirect one of the three independent variables on lung function through vitamin D levels. This research took time from October 2023 to January 2024 and involved 47 active smoker respondents whose vitamin D level status and lung function were measured. There was a significant direct effect of obesity level on vitamin D levels in the active smoker population (p<0.05;f-square=2.889). While demographic factors (p>0.05;f-square=0.030) and smoking frequency (p>0.05;f-square=0.003) did not have a direct significant effect. Demographic factors, obesity, and smoking frequency don’t have significant direct effect on lung function in active smokers (p>0.05)
Benzene, Toluene, Xylene Levels and Subjective Complaints in Shoe Workshops
The demand for shoes must be met by the worldwide shoe manufacturing business, but the inhalation dangers associated with its chemical processes—which use benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX)—raise health issues for workers. Initial surveys showed that most shoe manufacturing workshops do not have adequate ventilation. Most workers often complain of symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, and headaches. This study examined the relationships between worker symptoms and chemical levels at shoe factories in Medan, Indonesia, in 2017. This was an observational cross-sectional study. The total population was 72 workers in shoe workshops in the small industrial center area in Medan city. The sample size in this study was 47 people in seven shoe workshops. BTX concentrations were measured in seven workshops. Statistical tests used in this study were chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test with a significance level of p<0.05. According to the findings, the most common symptoms among employees were coughing (40.4%), dizziness (55.3%), and eye discomfort (55.3% of respondents). The range values were 0.09 ppm to 2.83 ppm, 1.20 ppm to 178.98 ppm, and 0.11 ppm to 50 ppm for benzene, toluene, and xylene, respectively. The two compounds most commonly exposed to levels exceeding the ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists) threshold level value were toluene (55.3%) and benzene (25.5%), according to ambient readings. Of the workshops that were inspected, only two (28.57%) had a functional ventilation system. Exposure to benzene exceeding the quality standard showed a significant association with dizziness (p = 0.003) and watery eyes (p = 0.003). Meanwhile, exposure to toluene exceeding the permissible limit was significantly associated with dyspnea (p = 0.005). Our research showed that over half of the workforce reported subjective complaints and that levels of benzene and toluene exceeded recommendations for occupational exposure
Environmental Factors and Efficacy of Castor Seed Influencing Aedes aegypti Larval Presence
Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a major global health challenge, especially in areas endemic to Aedes aegypti mosquito. This study analyzes the environmental factors influencing larval presence and investigates the effectiveness of natural larvicides from castor seed (Ricinus communis) in controlling Ae. aegypti mosquito larvae. Using a cross-sectional survey of households by purposive sampling between those located near and far from public places and a quasi-experimental study compared households in the intervention group (using castor seed powder larvicide) with those in the comparison group (not using castor seed powder larvicide) were conducted in Medan Amplas District, Medan City. The study found that location significantly impacts mosquito larvae (p = 0.045, OR 3.26, 95% CI), with households near public places at higher risk. Applying castor seed-based natural larvicide at 100 mg/L of water (p = 0.0001, OR 37.76, 95% CI 17.9-79.2) significantly reduced larvae, with a 37.76-fold higher likelihood of larval absence than the comparison group. Notably, the use of castor seed powder demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in reducing the presence of Ae. aegypti mosquito larvae. These findings highlight the potential of castor seed natural larvicides as a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to chemical larvicides, particularly for households near public places
Variations of Ovitrap Autocidal Water for Controlling Aedes Aegypti
Dengue fever in Indonesia is still classified as a serious disease because it has increased yearly from 2011 to 2013. This study aims to determine the difference in the effectiveness of various types of water in the queue as a trap for eggs of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in Bukittinggi. This type of research is experimental. The test used is the Anova test because the data is not normal using the Mann-Whitney test. The research sample used a sampling technique. This study uses primary data which can be seen from the number of trapped Aedes Aegypti mosquito eggs. The results showed that between the straw bales using well water and mineral water, the p-value was (0.421)> ɑ (0.05), meaning that there was no difference between the straw-soaked line with well water and water mineral. Meanwhile, after a statistical test was carried out between the straw bales using mineral water and rainwater, the p-value was (0.008)> ɑ (0.05), (Ho was rejected, Ha was accepted), meaning that there was a difference between the straw-soaked anthers and mineral water and rainwater. Based on the results of various types of attractants on the number of Aedes aegypti mosquito eggs trapped in the applied science laboratory of the University of Fort De Kock, Bukittinggi, the straw-soaked extract with rainwater is more effective because it produces more eggs than the extract soaked in straw with well water and extract soaked in straw with mineral water
Nutritional Status of Children Aged 6-59 Months Based on Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure
Composite Index Anthropometric Failure (CIAF) is an alternative indicator for assessing nutritional status in children which can identify all children who are malnourished, whether they are stunting, wasting, underweight, wasting and underweight, stunting and underweight, or a combination of all three. The problem of failure to thrive in children aged 6-59 months based on CIAF in Bojongsari District, Depok City, in 2023 is 29,8%. This figure is higher than conventional measurements with single indicators of stunting, wasting, and underweight in Depok City based on the 2023 SKI, respectively, namely 14.3%, 5.8%, and 12.8%. The research aims to determine the determinants of the nutritional status of children aged 6-59 months based on CIAF in Bojongsari District, Depok City, West Java Province in 2023. This quantitative research with a cross-sectional study design used secondary data, and data analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression. There were 317 children aged 6-59 months in this study. Bivariate analysis showed that variables related to children’s nutritional status based on CIAF were energy intake, protein intake, fat intake, and carbohydrate intake. Multivariate analysis shows that energy intake is the risk factor in children’s nutritional status based on CIAF in children aged 6-59 months in Bojongsari District, Depok City, West Java Province in 2023 after controlling for the variables protein intake and fat intake (p=0.006; OR = 3.493, 95% CI = 1.428 – 8.543)
The Effectiveness of Effleurage and Trigger Point Techniques in Reducing Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness of the Quadriceps
Abstract. Injuries resulting from physical activity can limit an individual’s mobility and performance. Appropriate therapeutic interventions are therefore required to minimize the risk and impact of injury. The present study aims to examine the effectiveness of a combination of effleurage and trigger point therapy in reducing pain caused by delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) among Muara Enim United athletes. The research employed a quasi-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest approach. A total sampling technique was applied, involving sixteen athletes as both the population and sample. The treatment was administered three times over the course of one week. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test with the SPSS version 26 software. The independent variable was the combination of effleurage and trigger point therapy, while the dependent variable was the intensity of delayed onset muscle soreness. The results indicated a decrease in the mean pain score on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) to 3.8/10 after three treatment sessions. The findings demonstrate that the combination of effleurage and trigger point therapy effectively reduces pain intensity associated with DOMS when applied three times within one week.
Abstrak. Cedera yang terjadi akibat aktivitas fisik dapat membatasi pergerakan dan performa seseorang. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan intervensi terapi yang tepat untuk meminimalkan risiko serta dampak cedera. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji efektivitas kombinasi teknik pijat effleurage dan trigger point therapy dalam menurunkan nyeri akibat delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) pada atlet Muara Enim United. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain quasi-eksperimen dengan rancangan one group pretest–posttest. Teknik pengambilan sampel menggunakan total sampling dengan jumlah populasi dan sampel sebanyak enam belas atlet. Perlakuan diberikan sebanyak tiga kali dalam jangka waktu satu minggu. Analisis data menggunakan uji Wilcoxon dengan bantuan program SPSS versi 26. Variabel bebas dalam penelitian ini adalah kombinasi teknik effleurage dan trigger point therapy, sedangkan variabel terikat adalah intensitas nyeri DOMS. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan penurunan nilai rata-rata nyeri pada Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) menjadi 3,8/10 setelah tiga kali perlakuan. Temuan ini membuktikan bahwa kombinasi pijat effleurage dan trigger point therapy efektif dalam menurunkan intensitas nyeri akibat DOMS dengan pemberian terapi sebanyak tiga kali dalam satu minggu
The Knowledge Level of IKOR UNNES Students on the Effect of Neurobic Exercise on Cognitive Function Improvement
Neurobic Exercise is a training method that combines both physical and sensory faculty such as hearing, cognition and memory (Dighe, et al., 2020). Neurobic exercises provides stimulus that can improve cognitive abilities such as alertness, concentration, speed, perception, learning, memory, problem solving and creativity. Furthermore, to gain more optimal result in some exercise, we need to first understand how this kind of exercises method works. Therefore, this study aims to determine the level of knowledge of UNNES Sports Science students regarding the effect of neurobic training on improving cognitive function. This research is quantitative descriptive research with a survey method. This research uses questionnaire with 3 indicators with a total of 30 question items. A total of 56 samples were taken using purposive sampling method. Quantitative descriptive analysis technique was used to analyze the data sample. The results showed there were 45 samples having a good level of knowledge whereas other 11 were on moderate level of knowledge. The average score obtained was 22.9 with a standard deviation of 2.47. The highest score obtained was 28 while the lowest score was 17. The conclusion of this research is that UNNES Sports Science students have a good level of knowledge about neurobic exercise and its effect on improving cognitive function
Carbon Emission Disclosure, Carbon Performance, and Firm Value: Exploring Intellectual Capital’s Role
Purposes: This study investigates the impact of carbon emission disclosure and carbon performance on firm value, with intellectual capital as a moderating variable. The research addresses the increasing importance of sustainability disclosures and their effect on corporate valuation, particularly in the mining sector, which significantly contributes to global carbon emissions.
Methods: This research employs a quantitative method by examining data from 63 mining companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) for 2020–2023. Through purposive sampling, 34 companies were selected, resulting in 94 observations. The data were analyzed using unbalanced panel data regression with the help of STATA software.
Findings: The results show that carbon emission disclosure negatively impacts firm value, while carbon performance positively influences firm value. However, intellectual capital does not moderate the relationship between carbon emission disclosure, carbon performance, and firm value.
Novelty: This research highlights the limited role of intellectual capital in enhancing the effects of sustainability practices on firm value, providing new insights into its integration within corporate strategies. It emphasizes the need for companies and policymakers to optimize intellectual capital utilization in sustainability practices to improve corporate value. Future studies could explore other industries or incorporate additional moderating variables for a more comprehensive analysis
Self-Efiicacy as a Predictor of Work Readiness among Vocational High School Students
Vocational High Schools (SMK) accounted for the highest unemployment rate by educational level in 2024, primarily due to a lack of work readiness. One factor that is predicted to influence work readiness is self-efficacy. This study aims to examine whether self-efficacy can significantly affect an individual\u27s work readiness. The study was conducted using a quantitative design and engaged 102 students as respondents from 10th and 11th grades at SMK Gatra Praja, Pekalongan, selected through quota sampling. Two scales were used in this research: General Self-Efficacy Scale to measure self-efficacy and Work Readiness Scale to assess students\u27 work readiness. This study utilized simple linear regression analysis to examine the effect of self-efficacy on work readiness. The analysis indicate that self-efficacy significantly affected work readiness, with a significance value of 0,001 < 0,05. The study also found a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0,598, indicating that self-efficacy contributed 59,8% to work readiness, while the remaining 40,2% was affected by additional factors that were beyond the scope of this study. These findings can serve as a basis for developing school-based career guidance programs aimed at fostering or enhancing students’ self-efficacy to improve their work readiness
Strengthening Legal Certainty of Marriage Contract (Ijab Kabul ) via Telecommunications in the Digital Era and Its Alignment with Sustainable Development Goal : Case of Indonesia
This research investigates the legal implications and challenges of adapting ijab kabul (Islamic marriage contract) to the digital era in Indonesia. The rise of telecommunications technologies—especially video calls—has enabled remote marriages during the COVID-19 pandemic and in geographically separated contexts. While digital ijab kabul offers efficiency and broader access, questions persist regarding its legal validity, potential for fraud, and regulatory ambiguity. Currently, Indonesia’s Marriage Law No. 1 of 1974 requires physical presence for marriage to be legally valid. However, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has issued a fatwa allowing digital ijab kabul under specific conditions: real-time audiovisual communication, verified identities, and a shared session (ittihad al-majlis). These criteria demonstrate partial acceptance of digital presence under Islamic law, yet lack binding legal force. Using a normative juridical approach, this study analyzes statutory law, Islamic legal doctrines, and international comparisons with countries like Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. These nations have developed legal frameworks for digital marriage by enforcing identity verification (biometrics, e-signatures) and procedural integrity. The study proposes that Indonesia revise Article 26 of the Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI) to explicitly recognize digital ijab kabul, harmonizing it with Law No. 11/2008 on Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE Law). By formally acknowledging digital presence within ittihad al-majlis, Indonesia can ensure greater legal certainty and protect vulnerable parties. This legal reform supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 by promoting access to justice, enhancing legal institutions, and fostering trust in digital innovations within religious and civil legal systems
