Practical Analysis of Video Tutorials in Learning the Use of Electric Skin Care Equipment
Get PDFThe development of education today is marked by rapid technological innovation. This requires adjustments to the education system to keep in line with the needs of the workplace, which is also constantly changing due to technology. In other words, education needs to adapt so that graduates have skills that are relevant to the existing job market. The selection and use of learning media must be in line with the rapid advances in science and technology. Therefore, lecturers are expected to utilize information and communication technology to support the teaching and learning process, so that learning becomes more effective. The Cosmetology Education Study Program, as one of the study programs at State University of Medan, has a vision to become a superior study program in the field of vocational education, mastering technology, industrial engineering, and culture, in line with the field of cosmetology. To facilitate students in learning the material, the author created a digital learning medium in the form of a video tutorial on the use of electric facial care tools in the electric skin care subject in the Cosmetology Education Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Medan State University. Therefore, this study aims to describe the practicality of video tutorials. This study is a quantitative descriptive study with data collection using questionnaires. The respondents in this study were 35 students majoring in Cosmetology who took the Electric Skin Care course in the odd semester from August to December 2024. The results of the study indicate that the tutorial videos used in the lectures were categorized as very practical with a score percentage of 42%; practical with a score percentage of 50%; and 8% were categorized as sufficient practical
A Literature Review on the Use of Ethnomathematics-Based Student Worksheets in Elementary School Mathematics Learning
Get PDFThis study aims to analyze the trends, models, and effects of using ethnomathematics-based Student Worksheets in mathematics learning in elementary schools. The method used is a Systematic Literature Review by synthesizing 15 articles published between 2020 and 2025. Data analysis techniques were carried out using qualitative descriptive analysis with deductive and inductive reasoning to interpret and conclude the results of the study. The results of the analysis show that Research and Development studies dominate, integrating culture and mathematical material, such as geometry and arithmetic operations. Ethnomathematics-based LKPD can significantly improve students\u27 mathematical concepts because it bridges abstract mathematical concepts to more concrete ones, making learning more meaningful and playing a role in instilling cultural values in students
A Comparative Analysis of Female and Male Language Features in The Movie “The Idea of You”
Get PDFThis study focuses on gender language patterns within sociolinguistic, analyzing the women and men language features used by the two main characters in “The Idea of You” movie by Robinne Lee. The aim is to identify and describe the women and men language features reflected in the dialogues from two main characters. A descriptive qualitative method was conducted to analyze the data, which was sourced from the interactions between the two characters. The observation method was utilized to collect the data, and two theories were applied: Lakoff (1975) to identify women language features whereas to identify the men language features proposed from Coates’s theory (2004). The findings revealed nine out of ten features were present by the two main characters, with the exception of precise color terms. All five features of men language features were also identified. Mostly, intensifier is the most frequently used women language features, reflecting how the main characters communicate more expressively. In contrast, command and directives were the dominant men language features that employed by the two main characters, revealing their tendency to assert control and direct actions in their interactions
The Art of Derivation: Noun-to-Verb Transformations in Student-Written Sentences
Get PDFThe study investigates the use of affixes in the derivation process from nouns to verbs in sentences produced by EFL students at Tadulako University. This research employed a descriptive quantitative method, with data collected through written tests and questionnaires from 136 fifth-semester students. The data were analyzed using frequency distribution and descriptive statistics. From the written test, a total of 1.370 affixation errors were identified across seven targeted affixes. The prefix de- had the highest number of errors, accounting for 25% of the total. The questionnaire consisted of 50 items and was designed to measure five key variables: semantic clarity, parsing ability, affix frequency, productivity, and pars ability. The responses indicated that 78% of students found affixation confusing due to a lack of semantic transparency, while 65% admitted difficulty in segmenting complex words into base and affix. The reliability test of the questionnaire showed a high Cronbach\u27s Alpha score of 0.988, confirming its internal consistency. The findings revealed that the prefix de- was the most difficult affix for students, with the highest error rate in the noun-to-verb derivation process. Several factors influenced students\u27 difficulties, including semantic aspects, affix frequency, the ability to analyze word structure, affix productivity, and the ease of breaking words into their morphemes. This study highlights the importance of enhancing morphological awareness among EFL students, particularly in applying the derivational process as part of more effective English language learning. This recommendation is based on the observation that students’ limited familiarity with certain affixes, combined with insufficient explicit instruction in morphology, directly impacts their writing proficiency. Therefore, integrating morphological instruction into ELT—through focused affix exercises, contextual application, and parsing training—can significantly enhance students’ vocabulary growth, grammatical accuracy, and confidence in academic writing
The Use of Fillers by Teachers in EFL Classroom Interaction
No full textFillers have an important role in communication, especially for teachers to improve their delivery style and communication skills, resulting in a more positive and efficient classroom environment for the students. Fillers often used by teachers when speaking but it is possible that they do not know what fillers are and how to use them. This study aims to explain the kinds and functions of fillers used by teachers in EFL classroom Interaction. This study implements descriptive qualitative method. The participants are students of in-serviced teacher program in Universitas Negeri Semarang 2022. The data is analyzed using the theory of filler types by Rose (1998), which are lexicalized and unlexicalized. In addition, this study also uses theory of filler functions by Stenstrom (1994), which are hesitation, empathizer, mitigation, time-creating device, and editing term. This study found two types of filler namely, lexicalized and unlexicalized fillers. Filler okay is the most lexicalized filler frequently used by the teachers. Filler uh is the most unlexicalized filler frequently used by the teachers. Further, this study found five functions of filler used in EFL classroom interaction, such as hesitation in 99 utterances, empathizer in 49 utterances, mitigation in 20 utterances, time-creating device in 14 utterances, and editing term in 6 utterances
Parental Motivation and the Use of Technology in Children’s English Language Learning
Get PDFParents’ involvement in children’s English learning is vital. Moreover, nowadays, the ubiquity of technology-integrated learning materials is unavoidable. In the absence of updated research on the topic, the present descriptive qualitative study aims to scrutinize parents’ motivation and practices in helping their children’s English learning by using technology. The participants of this study were four parents. The data obtained from the semi-structured interview were analyzed by employing the interactive model of qualitative data analysis: data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions and verifying. The result showed that the participants were driven to participate in their children\u27s English learning process because they believed that English would benefit their children’s future existence while also allowing them to interact with society. Thus, it is important to escalate their English ability. It was undergone by providing their children with adequate English exposure, such as through daily interactions in English, English books, and even using technology with a screen-time agreement. Despite facing difficulty in utilizing technology, they managed it by establishing materials selection criteria, setting a screen-time limit, preparing back-up offline materials, also monitoring their children’ learning progress and outcome. The parents utilized technology by providing their children with relevant educational contents and platforms, which can be accessed by gadget. The findings of this study serve as references for parents to help their children learn English. Ultimately, future research is recommended to include a significant number of parents as participants in the study to gain deeper and more comprehensive findings
The Application of Multimodal Approach in the “English for Nusantara” Coursebook for 8th Graders
Get PDFThe use of multimodal resources is increasingly essential in the developing field of education, particularly in foreign language learning. Textual materials alone can hardly meet the varied needs of learners; the principle of multimodality gives a richer experience through text, pictures, color, and symbols as well as layout. It is out of this requirement that the Indonesian government issued the English for Nusantara coursebook for 8th graders under the Merdeka Curriculum. This study discovered how multimodality is applied in the coursebook, focusing on Chapter 2, Kindness Begins with Me. Using descriptive qualitative methods and documentation techniques, the analysis applies Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) framework of visual grammar consisting of representational, interactive, and compositional aspects. Results indicate that the coursebook has systematically put in multimodal elements towards guiding and getting students engaged. Human and non-human visuals deliver moral values; interactive elements evoke an emotional connection; strategic layout pushes message clarity. Such mode works hand-in-hand to better both language skills and character education. The study recommends similar multimodal approaches be adopted in other educational materials for creating learning experiences that are more inclusive and meaningful for junior high school students.
LEARNERS’ PERCEPTIONS OF NATIVE-SPEAKER INTERVIEWS AS A STRATEGY FOR IMPROVING ENGLISH PROFICIENCY
Get PDFThis study examines the perspectives of non-English major students regarding the role of interviewing native speakers in enhancing their English proficiency at a public online institution in Indonesia. A mixed-method design with a sequential explanatory approach was implemented. Quantitative data were collected from 50 non-English major students using a Google Form questionnaire and subjected to descriptive analysis to discern overarching perceptual trends. After that, we looked at the open-ended responses qualitatively to find out more about the things that were shaping those perceptions. The results show that most students think that interviewing native speakers is challenging and interesting way to improve their speaking confidence, listening comprehension, and vocabulary since they have to use English directly with the native speakers. The qualitative findings indicate that students regard the activity as a genuine learning experience that enhances real-life communication and boosts their enthusiasm to actively engage with English. In conclusion, the study indicates that incorporating interviews with native speakers is an effective pedagogical strategy for enhancing English competence among learners from non-English academic backgrounds
The Spatial Analysis of the Potential and Development Opportunities for Ocean Current Power Plants (OCPP) in Lombok Strait
No full textEntering an era where demand for electricity is increasing, renewable energy sources like the Ocean Current Power Plant (OCPP) are crucial for nations like Indonesia. The Lombok Strait, a key channel for the Arus Lintas Indonesia (ARLINDO) or Indonesian Throughflow, stands out as a strategic location for this technology due to its powerful currents. These currents have a minimum speed of 4.4 m/s and a maximum of 5.8 m/s, averaging around 5.34 m/s. This study sought to pinpoint suitable areas for OCPP development within the strait using a qualitative geographical approach, analyzing literature and satellite data. The research confirmed that current speeds ranging from 4.44 to 5.8 m/s could produce an average of 25.92 kW of power, equivalent to 181,647.36 kWh annually. Ideal locations for turbine placement ranging from 0 to 75 meters offshore, in water depths varying from 0 to -100 meters. Therefore, the study emphasizes the need for careful site selection using suitability maps and calls for further research into an effective power distribution system to successfully harness the strait\u27s energy potential.
The Effect of Mulberry Fruit Juice Substitution on Nata Sensory Quality
Get PDFMulberry plants are generally used for their leaves as silkworm feed, while their fruits are rarely used. In fact, mulberry fruit has the potential as a functional food because of its antioxidant content and high economic value. One form of processing is making nata to add variety. This study aims to determine the effect of mulberry juice substitution at concentrations of 0% (X0), 25% (X1), 50% (X2), and 75% (X3) on the sensory quality of nata including color, aroma, texture, and taste. The method used was a pure experiment with a completely randomized design (CRD), involving 50 panelists. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan\u27s test. The results showed that 50% mulberry juice substitution (X2) significantly increased the nata color score by 2.99, and produced a slightly chewy texture with a score of 2.28 which was still preferred by panelists. Aroma and taste did not show significant differences. Based on the overall results, treatment X2 (50%) was the best treatment in producing nata with the most preferred sensory quality
