Automatyzacja w procesie detekcji obiektów archeologicznych z danych ALS
In this paper approaches of historical, archaeological object detection from airborne laser scanning (hereinafter referred to as ASL) data were shown. Presented approach of automatic extraction of potential charcoal pile was the analysis of a selected processing of digital terrain model. In this example, it was attempted to detect archaeological sites on a small test area by usage of template matching. Positive results have proved a great number of detected objects. Methodology applied in the research allowed for finding of a large percentage of measured objects indirectly. Presented approach was also assessed by the results of object extraction in respect to field measurements in the area of interest, as well as effectiveness of automation procedure
Konflikty zbrojne w pradziejach. Perspektywy badawcze
The main issue of this article is to discuss the history and state of the arts of warfare and violence in prehistoric Europe and present crucial categories of archaeological finds related to this kind of past human activity. Organized violence undoubtedly played an important role in the existence of prehistoric people and is also considered as one of the main factors responsible for changes in culture of past societies. Moreover, relatively large number/quantity of archaeological data and a constantly growing number of studies relating to warfare clearly shows, that this interesting issue by no means should be ignored and deserves researchers’ attention
Experimental research versus the popularisation of knowledge of the Stone Age
In this paper we shall demonstrate the relationship between experimental research regarding the oldest period of human history and the popularisation of knowledge of the Stone Age. Our discussion is based primarily on our own experience of undertaking experimental research and presentation of its results to participants of popular science events. Some examples illustrating the relationship between science and its popularisation have been provided. In this paper we shall demonstrate the relationship between experimental research regarding the oldest period of human history and the popularisation of knowledge of the Stone Age. Interpretując przeszłość – próby poznańskiej archeologii eksperymentalnej epoki kamienia w Biskupinie
The paper presents the results of an experimental study carried out in the Biskupin Archaeological Museum by several archaeology students of the Institute of Prehistory at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The project was managed by Katarzyna Pyżewicz PhD. The study, undertaken between 2008 and 2010, included making frames of huts, covering them with cane, as well as creating and using the replicas of the Stone Age tools. The purpose of all experiments was to attempt to answer the questions: how Mesolithic dwellings could have looked like, whether it seems reasonable to try to create “reconstructions” of them, what techniques and types of tools were used to build them, and how effective they really were. The purpose of the study was also to review established theories concerning the Mesolithic dwellings from the Polish Lowland and to draw attention to the cognitive valour of an experiment in archaeology
Lotniczy skaning laserowy w polskiej archeologii. Czy w pełni wykorzystywany jest potencjał prospekcyjny metody?
Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) is an advanced method of archaeological prospection. One can easily spot an increasing number of applications of LiDAR data within Polish archaeology. Due to that fact it is important to understand the prospective potential of the method as well as subjective character of generated information. The aim of this paper is to describe analytical and interpretative aspects of ALS. Application of LiDAR data is characterised by various processes which lead to the reduction of information about the past. Those processes will be identified and a number of practical solutions aiming to prevent them will be presented. The paper, based on a critical analysis of the procedurę of data acquisition and processing as well as creation of the final products, shows how important is knowledge of subjective character of data, tools and techniques during usage of ALS for archaeological purposes
Gospodarcze i społeczne znaczenie nieudomowionych zwierząt dla społeczności wczesnoneolitycznych w wybranych rejonach Europie Środkowej
This article is a shortened version of the author’s MA thesis, which was presented in 2011. It has been also an attempt to present the most important aspects of the importance of non-domestic animals for the Linear Pottery culture communities inhabiting Central Europe in the early Neolithic. For this purpose, the analysis was carried out within a selected trial area, from where the material was collected. It included three regions, where intensified settlement of the Linear Pottery communities took place in the early Neolithic: the Elbe and Saale river basin, Małopolska (also referred to as Lesser Poland) and Kujawy (Kuiavia). In the trial area fourteen sites were located and then analysed for the presence of remains of domestic animals
Tożsamość wojownika w grupie krakowsko-sandomierskiej kultury ceramiki sznurowej
The main issue of this paper is to identify men-warriors within the Cracow-Sandomierz Group of Corded Ware culture burials and attempt to reconstruct combat techniques undertaken by them. To achieve this goal, a comprehensive analysis of selected burials has been conducted. These selected burials had to meet strict criteria such as: particular body arrangement, sex, age, and presence of certain grave goods, particularly weapons. The examination of differences within grave goods and relations between their categories, as well as sex, age, and body arrangement of the deceased clearly shows that the Cracow-Sandomierz group of Corded Ware culture encompassed a specific pattern of identity strongly related to manhood, possession of arms and, most likely, armed combat
Archeologia w chmurze punktów. Porównanie rezultatów filtracji i klasyfikacji gruntu w projekcie ISOK z wynikami opracowanymi w oprogramowaniu LAStools i Terrasolid
This paper is an attempt to compare selected software options for processing of LiDAR data. It is focused on filtration and classification of the ground points for the purpose of archaeological sites identification. We confronted popular commercial Terrasolid software with LAStools released under the LGPL license. To accomplish this task we used data gathered in the frame of ISOK project (Computerized Information System of Country Protection from Extraordinary Hazards), implemented in Poland several years ago. In order to examine the effectiveness of the software algorithms we selected well-known archeological sites of various landforms (barrows, megaliths, hill forts) to perform the test. Obtained results were compared with the classification provided within the source data of the ISOK project. It allowed us to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of each tested solutions
O pewnym „kazachskim” petroglifie i jego „podróży” w czasie i przestrzeni. Refleksja o społecznej adaptacji przeszłości
Author of the paper discusses social implications of the choice of a prehistoric rock art. image as a graphic symbol of the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the Adam Mickiewicz University. The essay is divided into two parts. The first one deals with implications which result from using a petroglyph as a rock art image. In this matter the paper stresses interpretative context of reading this petroglyph in terms of otherness, both on formal and epistemological levels. In the second part the author considers implications which result from choosing this particular petroglyph, which comes from Kazakhstan. Author demonstrates different social involvements of such a choice, which however well define a nature of cultural anthropology as an academic discipline, which, by definition, faces numerous epistemological and ethical dilemmas in its practice
