The purpose of this study was to estimate the sex, age structure and minimum number of individuals (MNI) of human skeletal remains found in trenches number 69 and 70 located in St Mary’s Church in Ostrów Tumski. A new methodology had to be created as a consequence of bone fragmentation and the absence of preserved anatomical system. The lower limit of the group was obtained by adding the number of particular bones found in their entirety to the number of ends of the same bone. Sex and age were determined on the basis of skulls. The best quantitative indicators for adult vs immature status were femurs. Somewhat less useful was tibias. Based on the new methodology, the MNI for excavation no. 69 was 17 adult, 6 immature; for in excavation no. 70, 229 adult, 17 immature. Femurs and tibias were distinguished by the best state of preservation due to their robustness and characteristic anatomical structure, which facilitated the identification of even small elements. The disadvantage of this research was that only the lower limit of the group could be determined

The paper aims at presenting research activities of prehistoric archaeologists from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań in the Eastern Mediterranean. In particular, it focuses on presenting objectives and results of ongoing works at the Neolithic settlement in Çatalhöyük in Central Anatolia. The Polish project, which is an intrinsic element of the Çatalhöyük Research Project, began in 2001 in cooperation with the Polish Academy of Sciences and later University of Gdańsk. It continues currently as the Adam Mickiewicz University project. The works involve excavating the uppermost levels of the settlement occupation dated back to the end of the seventh millennium cal. BC, which have not been investigated to date. The discovered architecture and material objects are unique in nature indicating remarkable transformations in all aspects of the long-lasted Neolithic tradition. The results have been published and presented in numerous national and international settings. They also led to establishing a close collaboration with numerous leading centres of the Anatolian and Near Eastern Neolithic studies. The project at Çatalhöyük comprises an active participation of students leading to completion of numerous Bachelor, Master and Doctorate dissertations

The article discusses the history of archaeology at the University of Poznań since its establishing (31st January 1919) to the present day. It explains what boosted its development, and points at difficult periods in its history. More concern has been devoted to the origins of archaeology at the University, and especially to Józef Kostrzewski, an outstanding archaeologist who created a vision of archaeology in Poznań and influenced its development for years, a researcher who established his own school of archaeology. In the article the way has been shown leading to the creation of the Institute of Prehistory (in 1982) and Jan Żak’s concerns in this regard. Less attention has been paid to the modern history of archaeology as it has been discussed in other articles in this volume

This paper discuses the excavations in the cemetery of the Komarów culture of the Bronze Age in Bukivna upon the upper Dniester. They have been carried out by the Polish-Ukrainian archaeological expedition as a part of the project of the National Centre of Sciences, the aim of which has been to provide comprehensive bioarchaeological characteristic and socio-cultural interpretation of the cemetery.During the field walking over 50 barrows were documented, round or slightly oval in plan. They occurred in three main clusters, arranged in groups-lines, on the watershed between the Dniester and its little, nameless tributary. The article presents the results of the study of barrow 1, in which there were discovered six features and over 400 artefacts, including 38 vessels in several deposits, 262 flint implements, fragments of structural daub, and bronze items - a pin and pendant, as well as small, burned bones.Among the features two charred wooden structures seem special and one stone-and-wood (cenotaph). Bones were “scattered” mainly between wooden structures.A series of analyses and specialist expertises had been done: radiocarbon, paleopedological, geomorphological, paleobotanical, physico-chemical. The sum of probability distribution of calibrated radiocarbon dates suggests second quarter of the second millennium BC. These dates are consistent with the analysis of the stylistics of vessels and bronze artefacts, indicating the early and classic stages of development of the Komarów culture

The article presents the history of Classical Archaeology as a research and study area in Poznań, from the perspective of the times in which it was created and developed. The author of the text also outlines scientific achievements of Poznań university centre in the field. The subject was established already in 1919 with the creation of the University of Poznań itself, and it grew steadily in the interwar period, mainly through the efforts of the only specialist -Mieczysława S. Ruxer, PhD. After World War II, Classical Archaeology had been taught at the University since the resumption of its activities in 1945 until 1969, when it was closed. Archaeologists, however, continued both research and teaching in the area - working in the Institute of History and the Institute of History of Art. Moreover, since 1970 Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań has had its own archaeological mission excavating the ancient legion camp and the city of Novae (present Bulgaria). After the fall of communism and the political transformation in 1989, endeavours were made to reactivate Classical Archaeology in Poznań. As a result, it was re-created in 1999, being a part of the Archaeology subject at the Institute of Prehistory, as a specialisation of Archaeology of the Mediterranean. In 2004 it was renamed and since then there has been the specialisation of Oriental and Ancient Archaeology, developing at the Institute of Prehistory at Adam Mickiewicz University
