Long-distance contacts, exchange of goods and more organized forms of trade have been a part of human life since the beginning of what is commonly perceived as culture. One reason for this has always been an unequal geographic distribution of desirable raw materials such as obsidian, flint, or metals. Another driving force comprises the construction of social networks through the exchange of extraordinary objects. My work explores the connectivity and cross-cultural communication between the Bronze Age societies, in particular the Mycenaean world and Central Europe. These links are less researched than those between the Eastern Mediterranean societies of the time. The cultural differences between the Mycenaean Greece and Central Europe, along with the diversity of their societies, provide an interesting and strongly debated case study. There are significant differences in opinions on the nature of these relations, their importance, intensity, and range. Archaeological evidence of cross-cultural contacts between Central Europe and the Aegean is rich and diverse. It includes amber, faience, weapons and tools, dress fasteners, personal ornaments and jewellery, metal vessels, Handmade Barbaric Ware, horse harness made of bone and antlers, loaf-of-bread idols and decorative elements, etc. Despite the often unclear context in which these objects and elements have been found, there is a striking similarity of appearance and this shared materiality may indicate shared notions of technology and ideology

Biologia versus kultura. Przegląd bioewolucyjnych i kulturowych teorii wojny w przedpaństwowych społecznościach pradziejowych

    Get PDF
The paper’s main aim is to outline the problem of polarisation of contemporary discussion concerning the concept of origins of warfare. Basically, two leading trends can be distinguished: the first one accentuates the biological basis of human violence and places its origins deep into our evolutionary past. The second one recognises conflict as a relatively late and typically cultural phenomenon in human prehistory, which cannot be interpreted in terms of natural selection and evolution. The existence of a sharp ideological border between ‘hawks’ and ‘doves’ enables a comparison of both perspectives and facilitates the analysis of internal dynamics of their development

This paper sets out to present how the research results and knowledge of the archaeological heritage of the Bobolice Region were disseminated under the project ‘Non-invasive surveying of the potential of archaeological resources in the Bobolice region, West Pomerania Province’ and offers further propositions in this regard. One of the project’s essential objectives was to determine how we can use information generated through non-invasive research methods for the dissemination and popularisation of the archaeological heritage resources to the general public and how to exploit them for the development of tourism in this region of Poland. This paper provides an overview of the basic principles of the dissemination of knowledge about the cultural and/or archaeological heritage. It discusses the key initiatives in the field carried out during the project. These included a seminar, a popular science conference, lessons at schools, promotional activities and publications. Among others, the project sought to specify the possibilities for a potential use of certain archaeological structures and sites, through actions aimed at their dissemination and making them available to the general public, and a possible use in the development of archaeological tourism in the region. The recommendations presented here should be seen merely as suggestions for potential activities centred on the archaeological heritage resources in the Bobolice region.

The discussion is based on Klejn’s selected works, first of all his monumental work ‘Трудно быть Клейном. Автобиография в монологах и диалогах’, translated into Polish as ‘Trudno być Klejnem. Autobiografia w monologach i dialogach’, Sankt Petersburg, 2010, pp 600. This paper looks at Klejn’s life, his lot, often dramatic, but most of all his creative and outstanding works in the field of archaeology, anthropology and philology within their historical contexts. It also examines the reasons behind addressing certain issues
