Rola i pozycja społeczna kobiet we wczesnej epoce żelaza przez pryzmat zmian w rytuałach pogrzebowych – na przykładzie Wielkopolski

This paper proposes that the beginning of the Early Iron Age saw the change of the social role and status of women. The study was based on the analysis of dozens of graves attributable to the Lusatian Culture, which spanned the Bronze and Early Iron Ages. Included in the analyses were only graves of individuals, whose sex and age could be anthropologically determined. The hypothesis is justified on the basis of the socio-symbolic dimension of weaving and pottery

This paper presents the World-System Theory, which is also called the Centre – Periphery Model, and its application and usefulness in archaeology. This article focuses only on the World-System theory; the World-System Analysis will be discussed elsewhere. In the current article I consider the background to the Theory, its emergence at the beginning of the 1970sand its influence on archaeological works, particularly on the scholarly activity of Kristian Kristiansen and Andrew Sherrat. As an example, I present some statements concerning the Bronze Age as an era that saw very sophisticated, multiple exchange relations connecting remote regions of Europe. I also present the criticism towards the World-System Theory and its application in archaeology by Anthony Harding

Osadnictwo późnomeozolityczne na stanowisku 29 w Kopanicy, gm. Siedlec

Kopanica, site 29, is situated on the eastern edge of a former glacial trough, which now channels the Obra River north, and the latitudinal Warsaw-Berlin ice marginal valley. 2003 archaeological excavations at the site revealed evidence of intensive Late Mesolithic settlement. Trenches located on the sandy and gravel fluvial terrace of the Obra and in the zone of biogenic sediments yielded a substantial flint assemblage and remains of a dwelling structure sunken into the ground. The structure was radiocarbon dated owing to a fragment of a burnt animal bone from the fill deposit. The radiocarbon date coincides with the results of technological and typological analyses of the flint inventory. The Mesolithic settlement at the site can accordingly be attributed to a stay of a group representing the Chojnice–Pieńków (post-Maglemose) culture in the second half of the Atlantic period

Rola Nefertiti w religii i polityce okresu amarneńskiego

Nefertiti, the wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten, fulfilled several important functions in both the religion and politics of the Amarna Period. The very name of Nefertiti, Nfr-nfr.w-jtn nfr.t-jj.tj, which translates as The Beautiful is Beauty of Aten, The Beautiful One Has Come, shows how important was the role she played in representing the qualities of the sun god Akhetaten. Nefertiti was presented as The Great Wife of the King but also The Lady of the Two Lands. These titles are indicative of her strong position in politics, because in ancient Egypt, religion and ideology of royal power were inextricably linked. Apparently, the queen was identified with the ruler. This is evidenced, for example, in the scenes from talatat, where Nefertiti was presented on the board of a ceremonial ship pulling a captive by his or her hair and massacring him or her with a khepesh sword, held in the other hand. Very important is the sacral dimension of Nefertiti, because apart from holding significant religious and political functions, she was also deified. Nefertiti’s divine status is best illustrated and confirmed in Akhenaten’s sarcophagus. At each corner, the queen is shown with outstretched arms, covering and protecting the deceased ruler. Recent discoveries in great Wadi Dayr Abu Hinnis indicate that in 16 Year of Akhenaten’s reign, Nefertiti was still alive and was the highest queen. This sheds new light on the Amarna Period. It cannot be ruled out that Nefertiti, as Ankhkheperure Neferneferuaton, held the function of Akhenaten’s coregent, and after her husband’s death, ruled independently as Anchcheperure Semenchakare

Tożsamość upamiętniona w przestawieniach świętych. Przykład wczesnochrześcijańskich mozaik w rotundzie w Salonikach w Grecji

The article aims at presenting the mosaics from the dome of the early Christian church – the Rotunda in Thessaloniki, Greece. The function of the mosaics are twofold: (a) the portrayal of the early Christian identity and (b) the construction of the identity of the spectators – the Christians. The mosaics depicted thirteen Saints and were composed of the elements originating from ancient art that were used to strengthen a new Christian identity. The Saints were depicted as orants wearing garments, which are traditionally reserved to the high officials. Their eyes, hair, and garments were depicted in purple that is the colour conventionally restricted to the emperor. In this way, the Christians emphasised the high social status given to the Saints and strengthened their identity. Furthermore, these modes of representation had a profound impact upon the spectators creating and maintaining their identity
