After a semitic period or form of Christian faith, there was the European and occidental form that has lasted for close to two thousand years. In the third millennium we will have to find a way toward a worldwide, plural Church with a community structure that fits into the present context of globalization. The steps toward such a Church model will have to include the reevaluation and empowering of indigenous churches, such as the church of San Cristóbal de las Casas, in the state of Chiapas (Mexico).Después de un periodo o forma semítica de la fe cristiana hemos tenido una forma europea y occidental que ha durado cerca de dos mil años.

The article is a basic grammar of Christian faith. It presents a relational ontology, which replaces the traditional substance ontology. This fundamental change permits a reinterpretation of Church dogma: dogmas are viewed as mutually inclusive instead of additive. The author’s theology is ecumenical and does not allow for any separation between faith and practice. Since faith is the absolutely trustworthy communion with God, it finds its expression in the communion we learn to forge among ourselves.

The first section of this paper reviews present interdisciplinary discussions on the foundation and content of “human dignity” and endeavors to critique the great variety of positions held. It appears that the main problem behind these discussions is a lack of consensus on the concept of “person” and the weight of the occidental rationalistic heritage. The aim is not to present a complete overview of present positions but to show that they tend to excludethe weakest, notably the newborn, the severely disabled and the mentally ill elderly. The second section is anthropological and proposes an interrelational, inclusive, and egalitarian anthropology grounded in an ontological formula. On the basis of the ontological formula the dignity of the person is defined as a gift from others that enables these others to receive that same gift. The explanation yields an ethical self-evidence flowing from the relational giving and receiving that constitutes dignity. The third section reviews the theological arguments advanced in favor of the dignity of the person. It questions the traditional resort to the image-of-God theology and the parallel saved-by-Christ explanation. Instead it tries to answer the central question of What does faith contribute to the understanding and practice of the gift of dignity.
