Initiatives to Report and Reduce Embodied Carbon in North American Buildings

    No full text
Embodied carbon emissions during material extraction, production, transportation, building construction, and demolition are irreversible. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states that the building sector must be zero carbon by 2050. This goal is highly complex because carbon emissions include both embodied carbon as well as operational carbon from heating, cooling, ventilating, and lighting buildings. While standards and technologies exist to lower operational carbon, global and North American strategies to lower embodied carbon are critically lacking. This chapter presents data collection methods that allow the creation of new benchmarks that will hopefully motivate designers to assess and lower the envi- ronmental impact of their North American buildings. A lack of consistent data is not only responsible for the challenge of including embodied carbon in rating schemes, but it is also responsible for the scarcity of available benchmarks.SX

An innovative flexible and accurate packaging technique suited to fabricate low cost micro optoelectronic modules

    No full text
Several groups are presently investigating the opportunity to fabricate miniaturized optical devices characterized by high attachment precision. An automated surface mounted technique based on standardized supports of 10x10x4 mm(3) size and on active insitu alignment of the optical elements had been developed in our laboratories. This surface mounted device (SMD) technique is well suited for a flexible production of small optical devices and it allows a two dimensional layout. It is limited in precision to +/-1 mu m and it is not adapted for further miniaturization. It is briefly described in this paper. Here, we mainly report on a new automated and low cost optical-SMD packaging technique, named "Three Dimensional Miniaturized Optical Surface Mounted Device (TRIMO-SMD)", based on a in-situ active alignment of standardized 2.5x3.5x1 mm(3) elements by a laser soldering reflow process. A sub micron alignment precision is achieved and a attachment strength of similar to 20 N is guaranteed. The technique offers the potential of 3 dimensional layouts and integration on the same layout of electronic and optical elements.LO

Modeling proton-induced damage on 2-deoxy-D-ribose. Conformational analysis

    No full text
Modeling proton-induced damage in biological systems, in particular in DNA building blocks, is of major concern in studies on cancer proton therapy. This is indeed an extremely complex process and analysis of the mechanism at the molecular level is of crucial interest. Such collision reactions of protons on biological targets induce different reactions: excitation and ionization of the biomolecule, fragmentation of the ionized species, and charge transfer from the projectile ion toward the biomolecular target. In order to have an insight into such mechanisms, we have performed a theoretical approach of two of the most important steps, the fragmentation and the charge transfer processes. For that purpose, we have considered collision of protons with isolated 2-deoxy-D-ribose by means of ab-initio molecular dynamics and quantum chemistry molecular methods. The conformation of the sugar moiety has been analyzed and appears to induce important effects, in particular different fragmentation patterns have been pointed out with regard to the conformation, and significant variations of the charge transfer cross sections have been exhibited.ISI

Pyridomycin bridges the NADH- and substratebinding pockets of the enoyl reductase InhA

    No full text
Pyridomycin, a natural product with potent antituberculosis activity, inhibits a major drug target, the InhA enoyl reductase. Here, we unveil the co-crystal structure and unique ability of pyridomycin to block both the NADH cofactor- and lipid substrate-binding pockets of InhA. This is to our knowledge a first-of-a-kind binding mode that discloses a new means of InhA inhibition. Proof-of-principle studies show how structure-assisted drug design can improve the activity of new pyridomycin derivatives.UPCO

HOW TWITTER THREAD IS USED BY THE AUTHOR OF SHINING DISTRACTION ALTERNATIVE UNIVERSE (AU) FOR CREATIVE WRITING

    Get PDF
The title of this research is How Twitter Thread is Used by The Author of Alternative Universe (AU) for Creative Writing. The purpose of this research is to find out the basic element and the basic literary practices of creative writing in Alternative Universe (AU). The data source in this research are the Shining Distraction Alternative Universe (AU) and the interview result with the author of Shining Distraction. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method which is categorized as a phenomenological approach. The grand theory used in this research is creative writing theory about the basic elements (Ariestanty, 2021) and basic literary practice (Berry, 1930) of creative writing. The result of this study is that Shining Distraction AU fulfills the six basic elements of creative writing: theme, character, conflict, setting, plot and structure, and resolution. Then, Shining Distraction AU uses two basic literary practices, namely imagination and experience. In this research might lead to recommendations for further research into creative writing or the Alternative Universe. It is advised that future researchers investigate personality transformation and character motivation in the setting of Alternative Universe (AU). The researcher suggests looking at how particular genres are used in an alternative universe (AU). It might focus on how the inclusion of fantasy or science fiction genres in an AU produces various dynamics in the tale

TABOO IN SONG LYRICS: AN ANALYSIS OF TECHNIQUES AND IDEOLOGICAL CONSIDERATION IN TRANSLATING INAPPROPRIATE WORD

    Get PDF
This study aims to determine the types of taboo words contained in ten SZA songs, strategies or translation techniques applied by the translator, and the ideological considerations in translating those words. Using theories of Wardhaugh\u27s (2006), Molina and Albir\u27s (2002), and Venutti\u27s (1995), this research used descriptive qualitative method and content analysis. The data source was taken from the Indolirik YouTube Channel, which provides translation of song lyrics. This study used the observed and record method to collect data. The data collected are linguistic and translation data. Linguistic data in the form of taboo words taken from song lyrics are categorized by type. Moreover, the translation data are in the form of techniques and ideologies. The results revealed that there were 62 linguistic data and 11 translation data. From 62 linguistic data, seven categories of taboo word types were identified. The dominant taboo word type was excretion, which appears 15 times or 24.2%. Meanwhile, particularization, establishing equivalence, and reduction were the most frequently used translation techniques. Then, the ideology used in translating taboo words in SZA\u27s song lyrics was domestication. The ideology of domestication in the translation of this song is probably due to several things, such as cultural influence, reader orientation, and belief and religion. Based on the result of this study, it can be concluded that a good translation suits the target culture and the readers\u27 taste
