    The Agentcities Network Architecture

    Agentcities is a worldwide initiative designed to help realize the commercial and research potential of agent-based applications by constructing an open distributed network of platforms hosting diverse agents and services. The ultimate aim of the Agentcities initiative is to enable the dynamic, intelligent and autonomous composition of services to achieve user and business goals, thereby creating compound services to address changing needs. In this paper, we present the progress and current status of the Agentcities Network, six months after the launch of the project. The architecture of the Network, consisting of agents, services and platforms, is described. Finally, the plans and challenges for enhancing the Agentcities Network in the next phase of development are also discussed.LI

    Bioconversion of sugarcane crop residue for value added products - An overview

    Sugarcane is a major crop cultivated globally and the residue left over after the crop harvest and extraction of juice is a good biomass source that can be used for the production of several useful chemicals. The sugarcane bagasse is an excellent substrate for the production of various biochemicals and enzymes through fermentation. Now major interest is focused on the utilization of these residue for biofuel production. The sugarcane crop residue is rich in cellulose and hemicellulose, hence it can be used for the production of bioethanol and other liquid transportation fuels. The present review gives a detailed account of the availability of sugarcane residue and various commercially important products that can be produced from this residue.     X-ray structure of the mouse serotonin 5-HT3 receptor

    Neurotransmitter-gated ion channels of the Cys-loop receptor family mediate fast neurotransmission throughout the nervous system. The molecular processes of neurotransmitter binding, subsequent opening of the ion channel and ion permeation remain poorly understood. Here we present the X-ray structure of a mammalian Cys-loop receptor, the mouse serotonin 5-HT3 receptor, at 3.5 angstrom resolution. The structure of the proteolysed receptor, made up of two fragments and comprising part of the intracellular domain, was determined in complex with stabilizing nanobodies. The extracellular domain reveals the detailed anatomy of the neurotransmitter binding site capped by a nanobody. The membrane domain delimits an aqueous pore with a 4.6 angstrom constriction. In the intracellular domain, a bundle of five intracellular helices creates a closed vestibule where lateral portals are obstructed by loops. This 5-HT3 receptor structure, revealing part of the intracellular domain, expands the structural basis for understanding the operating mechanism of mammalian Cys-loop receptors.LCPPMLBE

    Adding diversity to ruthenium(II)-arene anticancer (RAPTA) compounds via click chemistry: the influence of hydrophobic chains

    The application of click chemistry to develop libraries of organometallic ruthenium-arene complexes with potential anticancer properties has been investigated. A series of ruthenium-imidazole-triazole complexes, with hydrophobic tails, were prepared from a common precursor via click chemistry. The tail could be attached to the ligand prior to coordination to the ruthenium complex or following coordination, the former giving the product in superior yield. The complexes were screened for cytotoxicity in tumourigenic and non-tumourigenic cell lines, and while the compounds were only moderately cytotoxic, good selectivity for tumourigenic cells was observed.     Adversarial Parametric Pose Prior

    The Skinned Multi-Person Linear (SMPL) model represents human bodies by mapping pose and shape parameters to body meshes. However, not all pose and shape parameter values yield physically-plausible or even realistic body meshes. In other words, SMPL is under-constrained and may yield invalid results. We propose learning a prior that restricts the SMPL parameters to values that produce realistic poses via adversarial training. We show that our learned prior covers the diversity of the real-data distribution, facilitates optimization for 3D reconstruction from 2D keypoints, and yields better pose estimates when used for regression from images. For all these tasks, it outperforms the state-of-the-art VAE-based approach to constraining the SMPL parameters.     Estimation of the statistical distributions of lightning current parameters at ground level from the data recorded by instrumented towers

    This paper describes a procedure based on the Monte Carlo method to obtain the statistical distributions of lightning current parameters at ground level starting from those inferred from experimental data recorded by means of tall instrumented towers. As a matter of fact, it is generally accepted that these distributions are affected by the presence of the tower; lightning current amplitudes, in particular, are "biased" toward higher values, as the tower ability to attract lightning flashes tends to increase for flashes with larger currents. Concerning the current peak distribution, the obtained results match with those presented in previous studies on the subject; for instance, for the Berger et al. distribution, they provide a median value decrease ranging from 20%-40%, depending on the attractive radius expression adopted in the calculation. The proposed procedure is more general than others presented in the literature for the same purpose. It can be applied, indeed, to whatever model is adopted to represent the exposure of the tower to direct strokes and, further, it allows to quantify the tower effect on the statistical distributions of all lightning current parameters of interest, and not only of the peak value one. The statistical distributions at ground, calculated with the proposed procedure, should be considered for power system insulation coordination studies, chiefly for a more representative and significant evaluation of the indirect lightning performance of distribution lines.     Lessons learned from the first edition of a large second-year course in software construction

    This paper lays out a case study of Software Construction, a new course in the undergraduate computer and communication sciences curriculum at EPFL. We hope to share some generalizable lessons we learned from running its first edition in Fall 2023. The course targets three core concepts—functional programming, real-world engineering, and correctness—and its design is informed by four principles—students should learn by doing, assignments should be self-motivating, knowledge should be built incrementally, and students should see progress over time. We illustrate how we realized these concepts and principles with practical examples of course materials and teaching methods that we hope will serve as useful inspiration to others teaching similar courses.
