    People’s Attitude and Perception of Forest Laws Regarding Land Use Policy in Phu Pha Man National Park

    This research aimed to determine the levels of attitude and perception on forest laws regarding land use policy in Phu Pha Man National Park as well as to investigate the factors affecting attitudes and perceptions on forest laws of people who had land use rights in Phu Pha Man National Park. An interview form was used as an instrument for collecting data from the sample group consisted of 315 people who have land ownership in Phu Pha Man National Park under section 64, National Park Act B.E. 2562 (2019). The obtained data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The results showed that most of the respondents were male, aged 41-50 years old, finished the primary level education, and made their livelihoods as gardeners. Each household earned less than 10,000 baht per month, with land ownership of 5.1-10 rai. Their perception of forest laws information was at a moderate level. Their attitudes towards forest laws were at a high level whereas their perception of forest laws was at a moderate level. The study also revealed that age, education level, main occupation, monthly income, land ownership, and land use pattern were factors that affected different levels of people’s perception of forest laws. Moreover, it was found that people’s perception of forest laws information had a significant correlation (p<0.05) with a level of people’s perception of forest laws. These research findings will be applied as a guideline for Phu Pha Man National Park as well as relevant agencies in providing information about forest laws to people in order to reduce the problem of the encroachment into national park in the future

    Plant Diversity of Flowering Herbs in Phu Sri Tan Wildlife Sanctuary, Mukdahan Province

    Background and Objectives: Presently, biodiversity lost based on disturbed habitat is a crucial problem. Then, all data collecting urgently needed for conservation and habitat management planning, in particular endemic and vulnerable plant species. This study aimed to observe the species diversity and evaluate the status of flowering herbs at Phu Sri Tan Wildlife Sanctuary.  Methodology: Four line transects were established which three lines were set up along the river bank and other on the nature trail for observe the flowering herbs during May 2020 to September 2021. Found flowering herbaceous species was identified and ecological environment factors were also recorded. In addition, all found species was evaluated on conservation status based on IUCN red list data. Main Results: Flowering herbs of 39 families, 95 genera and 144 species were observed. The most diverse families were Zingiberaceae comprising 15 species in 5 genera and Asteraceae comprising 13 species in 10 genera. The result also indicated that 6 species are endemic species, Camchaya spinulifera, Eriocaulon siamense, E. smitinandii, Impatiens noei, Platostoma fimbriatum and Dimetra craibiana. In addition, ten species of rare, three species of vulnerable, and five species of endangered were also found. Species of Amorphophallus brevispathus (Araceae) is a critically endangered, while, two invasive species were also found. Indicating flowering herbs in the study area are faced to local extinct, thus, the habitat management plan urgently needed to conserve this plant group.  Conclusion: The present status of all flowering herbs, particular, endemic and vulnerable species, is the necessary for conservation planning. In addition, all biodiversity databased is also benefit for future uses

    Clinical findings, haemato-biochemical alterations and conservative treatment of caecal dilatation in a buffalo

    This article describes the clinical findings, haemato-biochemical alterations, and conservative treatment of a buffalo suffering from caecal dilatation. The clinical findings were anorexia, scanty faces, reduced rumen motility, distension of right flank, ping sounds on auscultation and percussion of right flank and dilated caecum at pelvic brim on per-rectal examination. The hemato-biochemical alterations were neutrophilic leukocytosis, increased AST, BUN and lactate, and low calcium levels. Conservative treatment resulted in uneventfully after a period of five days

    Assessing the acceptability of hormone-based estrus induction / synchronization protocols to overcome anestrus in buffaloes

    Five hundred dairy households in the rural areas of Punjab state were interviewed through comprehensively designed questionnaires to assess the knowledge and experience of farmers regarding the hormone-based strategies to overcome anestrus and getting the buffaloes pregnant. About 81.8% dairy households were unaware (P<0.05) about any estrus induction or synchronization hormonal protocol and majority (65.5%) of these belonged to households with <5 animals. Out of households having awareness about hormonal protocol use in buffaloes, the majority (58.2%) belonged to households with >15 animal. Out of dairy farmers using hormonal protocols, the proportion of illiterate was 14.8%. Out of dairy farmers not aware about hormonal protocols, the proportion of illiterate was 52.3%. Data analysis of 91 dairy households who had used hormonal protocols revealed summer (65.9%) and anestrus (82%) as the major underlying reasons for their use in buffaloes. Low success rate (20.2%), high cost (50%) and non-availability of doctor (29.7%) were the reasons for the irregular use of hormonal protocols. The success rate of hormonal protocols under field condition in terms of conception was 47.1%. In summary, the major bottlenecks in acceptability of hormone-based therapeutics strategies under filed conditions are illiteracy, high cost of therapeutics strategies and lack of awareness in buffalo farmers especially in households with <5 animals

    Dystocia due to faulty disposition caused by a monocephalus diprosopus monauchenos monster fetus in a buffalo

    A 5 years old buffalo in her second lactation was presented with the history of complete gestation at village Bajuri situated in district Hamirpur of Himachal Pradesh, India. Per vaginal examination showed fetus in posterior longitudinal presentation with dorso-sacral position and bilateral hip flexion. Per vaginal traction of fetus was tried by mutations and was removed manually. Fetus was congenitally defected with the presence of two heads. It was a rare case of ‘monocephalus diprosopus monauchenos’ with two pairs of nostrils, four eyes (tetraophthalmus), two mouths, each with a tongue and two ears. The two faces were fused caudally by a single parietal bone. Both faces were joined ventrally by the medial rhami of the mandible

    Fetal anomalies and monstrosities are the most common cause of dystocia in bovines. Conjoined twins are usually monozygotic in origin and occur due to incomplete division of one embryo into two at the primitive streak of the developmental stage depending upon the site of fusion or non-separation. Reports on such anomalies in buffalo seem to be meager. A rare case of dystocia due to dicephalus, tetrabrachius, thoracophagus, tetrapus, dicaudatus, conjoined female calf was resolved with the use of six-way traction by considering the internal pelvimetry

    Ultrasonographic assessment of effect of neostigmine on abomasal atony in young calves

    Present communication was focused on the ultrasonographic evaluation of the prokinetic effect of neostigmine in buffalo calves with abomasal atony. Six buffalo calves were selected for the study with absence of rumination, loss of feed intake, mild distended abdomen, achezia and frequent history of laying down and getting up with reduced rumen motility. Abomasal atony was confirmed by the ultrasonographic assessment of the abomasum motility. Calves were administered with injection neostigmine 0.02 mg/kg body weight slow intravenously along with 500 ml of 0.9% normal saline under the ultrasonographic monitoring. Abomasal motility was initiated by 18 to 42 minutes and complete abomasal motility was noticed by 150 to 180 minutes after administration of medications. Clinical improvement was noticed on the third day of therapy and efficacy of the neostigmine was noticed by ultrasonography. Present study concludes that neostigmine has prokinetic effect in buffalo calves with abomasal functional motility disorders. Ultrasonography is the best tool for assessment of abomasal motility without any adverse reactions and complications.&nbsp

    Successful management of post parturient complete prolapse of uterus in a non-descript buffalo - A case report

    Prolapse is a common ailment associated with parturition in cattle and buffaloes. An eight-year-old, non-descript buffalo with the history of aggressive assistance during parturition was presented at farmers doorstep for third degree complete uterine prolapse. The prolapsed mass haemorrhagic and soiled, the mass was cleaned maintaining all aseptic measures. Animal was restrained and using the three-step management reduction, reposition and retention of the prolapsed mass was undertaken. The blood parameters indicated anaemia, neutrophilia, and eosinophilia, while the serum profile indicated hypocalcaemia. The case was managed rationally by rehydration, supplementation of energy and calcium. The infection and trauma of uterus was managed with antibiotic therapy, analgesics and antiallergics. The animal recovered uneventfully without a relapse of the uterine prolapse

    The changing role of water buffalo in rural Vietnam

    Vietnam is rapidly industrializing, and many of the rural agriculturally-based communities in the periphery are no exception. On the flatter lands around Hanoi and more heavily populated areas in some of the provinces to north of the capital for example, the gasoline powered tractor is replacing the labour of the water buffalo. Additionally, as the population demands more meat in its diet, water buffalo are now raised for human consumption, often in pens, rather than for power needed for agricultural cultivation.  Indeed, as in the case of Chiem Hoa district in the Tuyen Quang province, what was once the plough has become a marketable and commodified brand of meat. Stated otherwise, an animal that was once common-place, interacted with daily, prized for its intelligence, decried for its stubbornness, and was considered by many across the countryside as another working member of the family, now seems somewhat exotic or has been reduced to simply another source of consumable protein. This chapter centres the water buffalo as a living framework to explore the complex social, cultural, environmental, and economic histories of the people of Chiem Hoa district in the Tuyen Quang province and by inference rural Vietnam.  While the trope of economic progression dominates the academic literatures of rural development, this study focuses on structural changes in the economy notwithstanding. This present that agriculture in Vietnam is mechanizing and industrializing, and as it does generations of shared history between rural people and their most valued animal is being altered forever

    Inter-relationship of peripheral hormones (IGF-1, testosterone and growth hormone) with reproductive traits in male buffalo

    This study was aimed to decipher the inter-relationship peripheral hormones [Insulin-like growth hormone (IGF-1), testosterone and growth hormone] with body weight, body condition score and scrotal circumfermnce across age-groups in male buffalo. Male buffalo (n=20) of different age groups viz. Group 1 (0 to 8 months), 2 (9 to 16 months), 3 (17 to 24 months) and 4 (25 to 32 months) were selected and Blood was collected along with body weight, body condition score and scrotal circumference. Significant difference (P<0.05) in the body weight, body condition core and scrotal circumference was observed between the groups. Peripheral IGF-1 level increased with age, highest in Group 4 (202.4±9.36 ng/ml). Similarly, testosterone was different between Group 1, 2 and 4, highest in Group 4 (1.73±0.02 ng/ml). Growth hormone, differed (P<0.05) between Group 1 (3.65±0.50 ng/ml), Group 3 (3.65±0.50 ng/ml) and Group 4 (8.56±1.96 ng/ml). Postive correlation (P<0.05) between various parameters (body weight, body condition score and scrotal circumference, testosterone and growth hormone) was observed. In conclusion, this study reports the age-related variations and inter-relationships of peripheral hormones with body weight, body condition score and scrotal circumference in male buffalo
