The composition of the atmosphere plays an important role in regulating environmental phenomena and by extension in climate change. The thermal emission of the Earth in the Infrared and TeraHertz (THz) region interacts with particles suspended in the atmosphere by absorption and scattering and modifies the radiative budget of the planet. However, there is currently no set of complex refractive indices from the study of representative atmospheric aerosols in the THz range (10 THz to 0.1 THz). In this thesis, particles from the Gobi Desert as well as pure compounds such as calcite and kaolinite are characterized chemically and morphologically by SEM-EDX (scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). A measurement bench for resuspended particles is set up and characterized in order to record the optical response of these particles by THz-TDS (TeraHertz time domain spectroscopy). Subsequently, FDTD (finite difference time domain) simulations are performed at the single-particle scale to better understand the interactions of aerosols with the THz beam. Finally, effective media theory is applied to investigate the complex refractive index of particles.
A Process-Centered Approach of lubrication and wear in cold and hot metal forming
International audienceCold and hot metal forming processes are families of manufacturing processes where tools apply compressive forces to shape a workpiece to a given geometry. These compressive forces generate high contact pressures and high plastic strains near the workpiece surface. They lead to shear stresses due to friction, and an increase of local temperature due to plastic stain and friction sliding. Consequently, specific lubricants are required to control friction at the workpiece/tool interface, to cool down tool surfaces to avoid overheating and a drop of tool hardness, and to protect workpiece and tool surfaces. Numerous lubricants have been developed to fulfill these requirements: liquid lubricant based mineral or vegetal oils, most of them containing chlorine, phosphorus, or sulphur additives, solid lubricant such as complex conversion coatings or polymers, etc. Tendencies are to limit the use forming lubricants containing hazardous compounds or based on non-renewable resources, such as mineral oil, and to turn to new environmentally friendly lubricants. Nonetheless, selecting a new lubricant remains a challenge for the manufacturer. Choosing a lubricant not adapted to the forming process may have dramatic consequences, untimely wear of tools, surface defects on the workpiece, resulting in an increase of the production cost. The keynote focuses on liquid lubrication and how lubricant may affect the quality of the final workpiece
Adèle Desloge, une autre « Muse douaisienne » ? Marceline Desbordes-Valmore et les siennes
International audienceThroughout the 19th century, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore was a relatively well-known poet. A popularizer of odd verse, her substantial work inspired authors of diverse sensibilities.Shortly after the publication of her posthumous collection in 1860, there were many tributes dedicated to make Marceline Desbordes-Valmore not only a great female author, but also the flagship of her hometown, Douai. It was in this wave of regionalist tributes that Hyacinthe Corne, a legislator from Douai, produced four lectures about two "Douaisian Muses": Marceline Desbordes-Valmore... and Adèle Desloge. Although the name of the former is not surprising, given the wave of tributes devoted to her since 1860, the name of Adèle Desloge has not survived posterity. Nonetheless, Hyacinthe Corne talked about them with the same passion.Born in Douai in 1788, Adèle Desloge gradually made a place for herself in the good society of Douai. In addition to holding a salon at the Château de Brunémont, she was a childhood friend of Marceline Desbordes-Valmore. Despite their differences in sensitivity and education, the two maintained a correspondence until 1855.During her lifetime, Adèle Desloge published two collections that were not as popular as those of her fellow Douai resident: Les Abeilles, a collection of poetry; and Solange de Fresne, a collection of short stories.Everything suggests that this work of limited scope was only highlighted by Hyacinthe Corne for political reasons; by the need to make Douai (and by extension, the North of France) a place of artistic production equal in quality to the capital. Is this the case, however? We try here to analyze the work of Adèle Desloge to detect qualities that are specific to it. In these minor texts which, in the 19th century, necessarily suffer from comparison with the author of "The Roses of Saadi", there are interesting themes.

Matthias Boeckl, Wilfried Kirschl.

Planning a Paris 2024 Event Away from the Capital: The Surfing Competition at Teahupo’o
International audienceThe Paris 2024 surfing events are held in Teahupo’o in French Polynesia, 16,000 km from Paris. The choice of Teahupo’o, which was a promising choice from a sporting, symbolic and political point of view, has been questioned mainly due to environmental concerns. Using a qualitative approach, the aim of this chapter is to assess the difficulties encountered in organising and planning such a remote event. Our study reveals a lack of anticipation and transparency on the part of various public stakeholders. It also highlights the need to consider the social acceptability of hosting the surfing competition. Lastly, the study shows the extent to which the notion of the legacy of the Olympic Games is the result of a Western-centric vision
Investigation of the origin of deep levels in Carbon-doped AlN/GaN/AlGaN HEMTs
International audienceIn this work, we focused on understanding the origin and impact of deep levels in various AlN/GaN HEMTs with carbon doped GaN buffer including or not an AlGaN back barrier. It is shown that the inclusion of a back barrier reduces drastically the current collapse. Furthermore, we examined the effect of carbon doping within the back barrier by comparing deep level signatures obtained from three variants. We show that a high concentration of carbon in the AlGaN back barrier screens the impact of carbon doping in the GaN buffer to a certain extent.</div
Maximizing the Electromagnetic Efficiency of Spintronic Terahertz Emitters
International audienceOptically pumped spintronic terahertz emitters (STEs) have, in less than a decade, strongly impacted terahertz (THz) source technology, by the combination of their Fourier‐limited ultrafast response, their phononless emission spectrum and their wavelength‐independent operation. However, the intrinsic strength of the inverse spin Hall effect governing these devices introduces a challenge: the optical‐to‐terahertz conversion efficiency is considerably lower than traditional sources. It is therefore primordial to maximize at least their electromagnetic efficiency independently of the spin dynamics at play. Using a rigorous time‐domain treatment of the electromagnetic generation and extraction processes, an optimized design is presented and experimentally confirmed. With respect to the strongest reported spintronic THz emitters it achieves a 250% enhancement of the emitted THz field and therefore an 8 dB increase of emitted power. This experimental achievement brings STE close to the symbolic barrier of mW levels. The design strategy is generically applicable to any kind of ultrafast spin‐to‐charge conversion (S2C) system. On a broader level, our work highlights how a rigorous handling of the purely electromagnetic aspects of THz spintronic devices can uncover overlooked aspects of their operation and lead to substantial improvements

Gas phase growth of metal-organic frameworks on microcantilevers for highly sensitive detection of volatile organic compounds
International audienceA gas-phase technique, known as chemical vapor deposition of metal-organic frameworks (MOF-CVD), is used for sensitizing silicon cantilevers. These cantilevers are coated with a uniform and compact Zn(EtIm)2 (MAF-6) film, enabling the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through a change in the resonance frequency of the cantilever. The MOF-coated sensor exhibits remarkable sensitivity to VOCs within the 0.33–0.71 Hz/ppm range and a limit of detection (LOD) spanning from 4 to 9 ppb. Notably, these sensitivities surpass those achieved by ZnO-coated cantilevers by two orders of magnitude. This high sensitivity is attributed to the high porosity and large surface area of MAF-6. The approach employed in this work is compatible with conventional microfabrication techniques and offers an advantageous avenue for the development of highly sensitive gas sensors
