Discrete ply modelling of aeronautical intermediate-scale notched carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastic specimens subjected to multiaxial loading
International audienceSeveral finite element models developed at the mesoscale level are available for predicting the strength andfailure progression of composite materials. However, this kind of damage models are commonly validatedby comparing with typical coupon-scale testing specimens under uniaxial loading, which are not fullyrepresentative of aeronautical structures subjected to complex multiaxial loads. In this work, the DiscretePly Model (DPM) is employed to reproduce intermediate-scale experimental tests carried out on carbonfibre reinforced thermoplastic samples, with a sharp central notch of 100 mm, tested in the VERTEX rigunder tension, shear, and combined tension and shear loading. The tests show early buckling (particularlyfor the shear and combined cases) and development of post-buckling for almost the entire loading. Thenumerical results obtained demonstrate that the strengths, the fluxes as a function of the applied strains, deformed shapes, buckling modes, crack propagations and failure patterns are predicted with reasonableaccuracy
Thermochronology of the Maures-Tanneron crystalline basement: insights for SW Europe Triassic to Miocene tectonic history
International audienceThis paper presents a thermochronological study of the Western European basement in the Maures-Tanneron massif (MTM), using zircon and apatite fission-track data, in addition to apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He analyses. The combination of these methods with inverse thermal modelling allows us to trace the thermal history of this massif from the Late Triassic to the present day. The study identifies several thermal events that are linked to two major tectonic phases at 120-40 Ma and 40-15 Ma. These new results prompt us to re-evaluate the thermal evolution and exhumation of Western European basement of the Provence region. We distinguish four episodes. (i) A period characterized by constant temperature contemporaneous with Triassic magmatic activity and Tethys rifting (ii) a period of sedimentary burial heating of the MTM associated with the Cretaceous Pyrenean rift evolution (iii) subsequent N-S Pyrenean inversion at 75 Ma, causing cooling and exhumation of the MTM, (iv) opening of the West European rift system and the Liguro-Provençal basin, which resulted in heating from 35 to 15 Ma and post 15 Ma cooling of the MTM. This study also provides insights into the paleogeography of the MTM and demonstrates its evolution at the cross-roads between the Pyrenean and Alpine orogens
Sodium hydrosulfide hydrate as sodium precursor for low-cost synthesis of Na3SbS4 ionic conductor
International audienceSolid-state batteries (SSBs), an alternative to liquid-electrolyte lithium/sodium batteries, are a hot topic of research in the field of electrochemical energy storage. Sodium tetrathioantimonate Na3SbS4, a promising sodium ion-conductor solid electrolyte, can be synthesized via solution chemistry; a suitable, less energy-consuming and efficient method for mass production compared to dry processes (solid-solid reactions, mechanochemistry). The current work proposes to replace anhydrous sodium sulfide (Na2S, Na-precursor) with sodium hydrosulfide (NaSH.xH2O), a cheaper product that considerably reduces the cost of material production, a limiting factor from an up-scaling
Rational constitutive law for the viscous stress tensor in incompressible two-phase flows: Derivation and tests against a three-dimensional benchmark experiment
International audienceWe analyze the representation of viscous stresses in the one-fluid formulation of the two-phase Navier-Stokes equations, the model on which all computational approaches making use of a fixed mesh to discretize the flow field are grounded. Recognizing that the Navier-Stokes-like equations that are actually solved in these approaches imply a spatial filtering, we show by considering a specific two-dimensional flow configuration that the proper representation of the viscous stress tensor requires the introduction of two distinct viscosity coefficients, owing to the different behaviors of shear and normal stresses in control volumes straddling the interface. Making use of classical results of continuum mechanics for anisotropic fluids, we derive the general form of the constitutive law linking the viscous stress tensor of the two-phase medium to the filtered strain-rate tensor, and take advantage of the findings provided by the above two-dimensional configuration to close the determination of the fluid-dependent coefficients involved. Predictions of the resulting anisotropic model are then assessed and compared with those of available ad hoc models against original experimental results obtained in a reference flow in which some parts of the interface are submitted to shear while others are mostly controlled by stretching. The selected configuration corresponds to a viscous buoyancy-driven exchange flow in a closed vertical pipe, generated by unstably superimposing two immiscible fluids with a large viscosity contrast and negligible interfacial tension and molecular diffusivity. Using different levels of grid refinement, we show that the anisotropic model is the only one capable of predicting correctly the evolution of the front of the ascending and descending fingers at a reasonable computational cost. We confirm this conclusion on a one-dimensional counter-current channel flow with a large viscosity contrast, and use this simple configuration to establish that the anisotropic model converges quadratically as the grid is refined, while the familiar ad hoc model based on an arithmetic averaging of the fluid viscosities only converges linearly

International audienceAs part of a critical assessment of wall boiling modeling through Heat Flux Partitioning approach, a new model dedicated to vertical boiling flows is proposed, with a revisited partitioning including a boiling heat flux related to bubble coalescence.Closure laws include a recent model for bubble dynamics, a new correlation for the bubble maximum lift-off diameter, and comprehensive selection of existing models for nucleation site density and bubble wait time. Each formulation are compared to relevant existing data from the literature in order to emphasize the importance of separate validation in such a modeling framework. The whole model is then confronted to detailed wall boiling experiments to simultaneously compare boiling curve predictions along other physical parameters such as boiling time scales (bubble growth, transient conduction, bubble wait), nucleation frequency, or nucleation site density. Finally, validation against wall heat flux measurements in various conditions are used to assess the model accuracy and further discuss the limits of the Heat Flux Partitioning approach.
Biocompatibility of Phosphorus Dendrimers and Their Antibacterial Properties as Potential Agents for Supporting Wound Healing
International audienceDendrimers are a wide range of nanoparticles with desirable properties that can be used in many areas of medicine. However, little is known about their potential use in wound healing. This study examined the properties of phosphorus dendrimers that were built on a cyclotriphosphazene core and pyrrolidinium (DPP) or piperidinium (DPH) terminated groups, to be used as potential factors that support wound healing (in vitro). Therefore, the degree of toxicity of the tested compounds for human erythrocytes and the human fibroblast cell line (BJ) was determined, and it was found that at low concentrations, the tested compounds are compatible with blood. The influence of phosphorus dendrimers on plasma proteins (human serum albumin (HSA) and fibrinogen) was examined, with a lack of conformational changes in the structure of these proteins, suggesting that their physiological function was not disturbed. The effects on plasma coagulation cascade and fibrinolysis were also assessed, and it was found that phosphorus dendrimers in low concentrations are blood compatible and interfere neither with coagulation processes nor in clot breakdown. Skin injuries, especially chronic wounds, are also susceptible to infection; therefore, the antimicrobial potential of dendrimers was tested, and it was found that these dendrimers had antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Grampositive bacteria. The highest activity of the tested compounds was found for higher applied concentrations

We will demonstrate how this approach, based on the comprehension of unfamiliar but related languages, can be mobilized in the FFL classroom, based on two research studies carried out in a high school context. Using surveys to gather data on the effects and opinions surrounding the curricular insertion of intercomprehension in the classroom, the pedagogical contribution of this approach to language teaching as a means of encouraging and valuing risk-taking – both among teachers and learners - will be highlighted as part of the development of plurilingual pedagogical practices in the language classroom in the Cypriot context.
