Causal analysis methods for estimating the impact of drought and cold events on crop yields in France
International audienceImpacts of extreme weather events (EWEs) on crop yields are commonly estimated using yield time series obtained from surveys. As these data do not come from randomized controlled trials, they are subject to confounding factors and may lead to biased estimates when analyzed using standard statistical methods. Recently, causal analysis methods have been proposed to take into account the risks of confounding effects, but they have never been compared in an agronomic context. Here, we used a dataset including 23 years of yield data in France to estimate the impact of two important types of weather eventsdrought events in summer (DE) and cold wave events in spring (CE) -on the yields of maize and sunflower, two crops potentially sensitive to these adverse weather conditions. We applied and compared several causal analysis methods, namely Inverse Probability Weighting (IPW), Matching (Match), Standardization (SDZ), and Double Robust (DR) using both linear mixedeffects models and gradient boosting machine learning models. Among the methods assessed, DR and SDZ consistently provided more accurate and less biased estimates. Differences between the linear mixed effects model and gradient boosting were relatively small. Our findings revealed that maize is highly sensitive to droughts and cold waves, with estimated average yield losses in France of -11.6 % (95 % CI = [-15.4 %, -9.3 %]) and -11.3 % [-14.6 %, -8.9 %], respectively, while sunflower exhibits smaller reductions of -7.3 % [-10.1 %, -5.7 %] and -6.9 % [-8.6 %, -4.0 %], estimated with the DR method. Our comparative study underscores the importance of adopting robust analytical methods for quantifying impacts of extreme weather events on crop yields
The global convergence of stochastic gradient descent in non-convex landscapes: Sharp estimates via large deviations
International audienceIn this paper, we examine the time it takes for stochastic gradient descent (SGD) to reach the global minimum of a general, non-convex loss function. We approach this question through the lens of randomly perturbed dynamical systems and large deviations theory, and we provide a tight characterization of the global convergence time of SGD via matching upper and lower bounds. These bounds are dominated by the most "costly" set of obstacles that the algorithm may need to overcome in order to reach a global minimizer from a given initialization, coupling in this way the global geometry of the underlying loss landscape with the statistics of the noise entering the process. Finally, motivated by applications to the training of deep neural networks, we also provide a series of refinements and extensions of our analysis for loss functions with shallow local minima
Neural Network-Based Estimation of Optical Feedback Factor in Self-Mixing Interferometry Systems across various feedback regimes
International audienceSelf-mixing interferometry (SMI) system is a promising and low-cost approach for displacement measurements. The resolution and precision of displacement estimation depend on key parameters of the SMI system and, in particular, on the optical feedback factor (C). This article presents a new method for estimating this C factor based on an artificial neural network (ANN) that analyzes certain specific fringe shape features of SMI signals. Specifically, only six features of the SMI signal are taken into account as input to a compact neural network with one hidden neuron layer (14 neurons) by the estimation process, which reduces the computational cost and simplifies its deployment. This study evaluates the C-estimation capability of the method in various simulated and experimental scenarios, including variations in displacement amplitude and frequency, random displacements, noise levels, and speckle effects. These analyses show that the method works correctly for a moderate feedback regime ( 14.6 ), this error is less than 2% (for C<8 ). Comparisons with other methods show similar or better accuracy but with the advantage of being able to handle all displacement waveforms (sinusoidal or arbitrary) at low computational cost, which facilitates integration into a real-time embedded system
International audienceAlthough deeply rooted in Vanuatu, little is known about the effectiveness and safety of traditional medicine. The objective of this study was to document traditional childhood practices and then provide a risk-benefit analysis of the most commonly used remedies. A total of 73 informants from two islands of the archipelago, Espiritu Santo and Efate, were interviewed through semi-structured interviews. Forty illnesses were recorded, the most commonly cited of which were diarrhea, coughs, flu, cuts, and stomach aches. Additionally, 187 unique remedies were identified, comprising a total of 99 species, of which Annona muricata, Pterocarpus indicus, Citrus x limon, Cocos nucifera, Hibiscus tiliaceus, and Macaranga tanarius are the most common. Some of these 99 plants are widely distributed in tropical countries (e.g., A. muricata, C. nucifera), while others are more specific to Vanuatu or certain Pacific locations. Despite the existence of ethnobotanical and pharmacological studies demonstrating the medicinal properties of these plants, several lack of clinical data in children persists, and further research would be needed to demonstrate their safety (e.g., P. indicus, M. tanarius), as well as for others that have not yet been the subject of in-depth bibliographic research.
BibliographieAuger, A, Dervin, F. & Suomela-Salmi, E. (dir.), (2009). On the Age of Information in Single-Server Queues with Aged Updates
The Age of Information (AoI) is a performance metric that quantifies the freshness of data in systems where timely updates are critical. Most state-of-the-art methods typically assume that packets enter the monitored system with zero age, neglecting situations, such as those prevalent in multi-hop networks or distributed sensing, where packets experience prior delays. In this paper, the AoI is investigated when packets have a non-zero initial age. We derive an expression for the average AoI in this setting, showing that it equals the standard AoI plus a correction term involving the correlation between packet age and inter-departure times. When these variables are independent, the expression simplifies to an additive correction equal to the mean initial age. In cases where the dependency structure is unknown, we also establish lower and upper bounds for the correction term. We demonstrate the applicability of our approach across various queueing scenarios, such as forwarding, tandem, and retrial queues. Additionally, we explore the accuracy of the derived bounds on a tandem composed of several queues, a model that has not yet been analytically solved from an age perspective
International audienceThe study is part of a research project on traditional medicine for children in the South Pacific (Vanuatu, French Polynesia, and New Caledonia). The aim of the project is to gain a better understanding of the role of traditional medicine in the treatment of childhood diseases, and to propose an analysis of the benefit-risk balance of the most used remedies. For this ethnobotanical study, which focused on New Caledonia, semi- structured interviews were conducted with 64 informants in the South Province and Loyalty Islands Province from November 2022 to January 2023. A total of 203 unique remedies were cited during the interviews, composed mainly of plants. In all, 104 plant species were mentioned, and the leaves were the most used. Traditional medicine is still widely used throughout the territory and has an important place in Kanak culture. Some of the most common plants used in traditional children’smedicine are effective, and no toxic effects have been noted to date (e.g. Coleus forsteri).
International audienceIn recent years, research on traditional medicine in French Polynesia, from both botanical and ethnobotanical perspectives, has intensified. However, despite these advancements, the exact number of medicinal plant species used has never been determined. To address this gap, we conducted a bibliographic study based on 59 references, of which 35 were selected according to predefined criteria. Covering a period from 1858 to 2023, our analysis collected detailed data on the various substances used in traditional remedies, including their names, uses, preparation methods, and geographical locations. We compiled a list of 304 medicinal plant species and 41 non-plant natural substances, documenting a total of 5727 usage citations for 200 diseases or symptoms treated. Additionally, data were gathered for each archipelago, deepening our understanding of the diversity of medicinal practices. Our study also highlights the lack of information on certain aspects of the traditional pharmacopoeia in French Polynesia, particularly regarding preparation and application methods, as well as a disparity in the geographical distribution of data. Ultimately, this study aims to serve as a reference tool for the development of future botanical and ethnobotanical investigations, as well as for the valorization of the identified substances.
Fused Collapsing for Wide BVH Construction
International audienceWe propose a novel approach for constructing wide bounding volume hierarchies on the GPU by integrating a simple bottom-up collapsing procedure within an existing binary bottom-up BVH builder. Our approach directly constructs a wide BVH without traversing a temporary binary BVH as done by previous approaches and achieves 1.4 -1.6× lower build times. We demonstrate the ability of our algorithm to output compressed wide BVHs using existing compressed representations. We analyze the impact of our method on software raytracing performance and show that it reduces the overall frame time on complex dynamic scenes where rebuilding the BVH every frame is the limiting factor on rendering performance.
