Música para rezos y liturgias de la Semana Santa de los archivos misionales en Bolivia

The present essay exposes the revision of some texts written by the missionaries and superiors of the Society of Jesus where it is narrated about the celebrations of Holy Week in the former Jesuit reductions among the South-American Indians. It speaks about music that was used in formal and popular liturgies of the Holy Week. We begin on Passion Sunday and continue until Holy Saturday, asking if – based on the music collections of the missions of Chiquitos and Moxos – it is possible to reconstruct the sound of these festivities according to what the texts written from the 18thcentury missions testify. The article includes the transcription of some of the musical works cited in the texts of the Jesuits. If in the conclusion of this study it is demonstrated that such a global reconstruction of the music of Holy Week is possible, the project could be deepened in another study as a natural continuation of this result

That fact that Thomas Tien became the first cardinal of China and the Far East surpassed thewildest dreams of Fr. Arnold Janssen, the founder of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD),who had sent the first two missionaries to China in 1879. He was one fruit of Janssen’sdecision and subsequent concentrated involvement of the Society in evangelizing China. Thisstudy gives an insight into historical greatness of Thomas Cardinal Tien Keng-hsin for theUniversal Church, the Society of the Divine Word and local Church in China. He emergesmainly as an iconic figure reflecting the developments in the Chinese Church and played asymbolical role for the universal Church as an important link in the process ofinternationalization of the Church and her subsequent self-actualization as a World Church atVatican II. The study aims at making us aware that Tien’s figure should have an integral placein the systematic and comprehensive research on the as yet little explored mission of theSociety of the Divine Word in China

The article presents forms of popular piety from the areas of Nobadia and Makuria, the former Christian kingdoms in the areas of present-day Sudan. Due to the small number of sources, the Alwa kingdom was omitted. The elements presented in this article are merely an outline of popular piety, which, thanks to the research of settlement positions from the period of Christian kingdoms and epigraphical sources, is successfully reconstructed

The Mission in Madurai 1606-1656 was a unique episode in the history of Christianity in India. During these times changing religion to Christianity meant abandoning one’s culture. Roberto de Nobili, an Italian Jesuit and founder of the mission was the fi rst European to learn Sanskrit, study the scriptures of the Vedas and convert Brahmins. He allowed them to keep their social customs, which was seen as controversial by the church hierarchy. He followed these social rules himself, living the life of an Indian ascetic and thus gaining respect among higher castes. His way of separating Hinduism from Indian culture was, and still is, contentious but it was done for practical purposes. The controversies forced him to defend his arguments on many occasions. In his writings he described Indian traditions and explained his method of missionary work. There were not many followers of de Nobili’s method, who would be able to understand the need of accommodation, undertake studies of Hinduism and be prepared to embrace an ascetic lifestyle. It was not until the 20th century that interreligious dialogue emerged as a concept and some Catholic clergymen found inspiration in Hindu spirituality. The goal of this thesis is to show just how pioneering was the accommodation method used by de Nobili and how his infl uence can still be felt on attempts at interreligious dialogue in the modern era.The Mission in Madurai 1606-1656 was a unique episode in the history of Christianity in India. The article begins with a brief defi nition of „World Christianity” and elaborates three theses for conceiving the relationship between missiology and theology, the understanding and practice of Christian missions, and the teaching of missiology. I argue that outside missiology there is no theology. I also reject the separation between church history and missiology, the division between the historic churches of the West and the „mission lands” of the rest, and a narrow focus of the goal of Christian missions on conversion and church-planting. Finally, I recommend a shift from „church history” to „history of Christianity.”The article begins with a brief defi nition of „World Christianity” and elaborates three theses for conceiving the relationship between missiology and theology, the understanding and practice of Christian missions, and the teaching of missiology. The announcement of Panama as host of World Youth Day in 2019, turned out to be a great surprise for the whole world. For the fi rst time such a small country, has hosted a global event. Panamá is known primarily from the Panama Canal and the Panamanian aff air called Panama. But speaking in these two contexts is very hurtful, because it is a country richly diverse, and the Church here has a unique, unique face. Catholic missions are included in the history of Panama from the very beginning. From the beginning of the bishopric in the city of Panamá, through the territorial development of the Church, everything here has a mark of mission. The fi nal element of the article is the presentation of the Church in the Bocas del Toro Territorial Prelature. The prelature is located in the Caribbean Sea and is geographically diff erent from the rest of the country. But this place is an example of a missionary church, and of a church that needs support in its mission. Poles coming to Panama for the next World Youth Day will discover a unique country, and together with the Poles, Panama will be discovered by the whole world. The announcement of Panama as host of World Youth Day in 2019, turned out to be a great surprise for the whole world. The iconography of Saint Francis Xavier abounds in mission themes. It includes literal and allegorical motives. Symbols are present in this iconography, but the narration prevails. In the mission iconography of Saint Francis Xavier are emphasized: the prophetic dream of a mission in India, teaching, disputing, administering the sacrament of baptism, miracles, the death of Saint Francis Xavier on the island Sancian and his apotheosis which is most often in the “company” of the personifi cation of the continents or mission countries. The iconography of Saint Francis Xavier abounds in mission themes. The Second Vatican Council opened a new perspective for interreligious dialogue for the Church. Theological reflection, including non-Christian religions, pointed out the elements of truth and holiness present in them and confirmed their value as preparation for the Gospel. This positive image of religion does not conflict with missionary activity. The conciliar and post-conciliar documents of the Church emphasize the constant validity of the missionary mission of Christians and indicate dialogue as one of the forms of mission. Significantly, the topic of interreligious dialogue is primarily addressed in missionary documents that recognize it as an integral part of the preaching of the Gospel. The Council decree Ad gentes divinitus, the exhortation of Paul VI Evangelii nuntiandi, the encyclical of John Paul II Redemptoris missio are just some of the Church’s many missionary documents that develop the concept of interreligious dialogue. The Second Vatican Council opened a new perspective for interreligious dialogue for the Church.
