    Euclid Quick Data Release (Q1). A probabilistic classification of quenched galaxies

    International audienceInvestigating the drivers of the quenching of star formation in galaxies is key to understanding their evolution. The Euclid mission will provide rich spatial and spectral data from optical to infrared wavelengths for millions of galaxies, enabling precise measurements of their star formation histories. Using the first Euclid Quick Data Release (Q1), we developed a probabilistic classification framework, that combines the average specific star-formation rate (sSFRτ\rm sSFR_\tau) inferred over two timescales (τ=108,109\tau={10^8,10^9} yr), to categorize galaxies as `Ageing' (secularly evolving), `Quenched' (recently halted star formation), or `Retired' (dominated by old stars). We validated this methodology using synthetic observations from the IllustrisTNG simulation. Two classification methods were employed: a probabilistic approach, integrating posterior distributions, and a model-driven method optimizing sample purity and completeness using IllustrisTNG. At z<0.1z<0.1 and M3×108MM_\ast \gtrsim 3\times10^{8}\, M_\odot, we obtain Euclid class fractions of 68-72%, 8-17%, and 14-19% for Ageing, Quenched, and Retired populations, respectively, consistent with previous studies. The evolution with redshift shows increasing/decreasing fraction of Ageing/Retired galaxies. The fraction of quenched systems shows a weaker dependence on stellar mass and redshift, varying between 5% and 15%. We analysed the mass-size-metallicity relation for each population. Ageing galaxies generally exhibit disc morphologies and low metallicities. Retired galaxies show compact structures and enhanced chemical enrichment, while Quenched galaxies form an intermediate population, more compact and chemically evolved than Ageing systems. This work demonstrates Euclid's great potential for elucidating the physical nature of the quenching mechanisms that govern galaxy evolution

    International audienceThe article explores the possibilities and limitations of voting rights for mobile Italian citizens, looking at how electoral laws and registration procedures have changed over time to cope with the increasing flow of people moving within and across national borders. Although the Italian State has long recognised its emigrants as part of the active electorate, until 2001 non-residents were required to return to their municipality of origin and had no alternative but to vote in person. This condition is still applied to internal migrants: registration on the electoral rolls is automatically linked to municipal population registers and, consequently, non-residents have to bear the administrative burden of transferring their residence after moving, or they have to travel back to their place of origin to vote. Our article describes the evolution of Italian electoral legislation and public awareness regarding the voting rights of mobile populations, including the recent experiment of remote vote for university students.L’articolo esplora le possibilità e i limiti del diritto di voto dei cittadini italiani mobili, esaminando come le leggi elettorali e le procedure di registrazione anagrafica siano cambiate nel tempo per far fronte ai crescenti movimenti di persone dentro e oltre i confini nazionali. Sebbene lo Stato italiano riconosca da tempo gli emigrati come parte dell'elettorato attivo, fino al 2001 i non residenti erano tenuti a tornare nel comune di origine per votare. Questa condizione vale tuttora per gli immigrati interni: l’iscrizione nelle liste elettorali viene effettuata automaticamente dalle anagrafi comunali. Di conseguenza, le persone non residenti devono sostenere l’onere amministrativo di trasferire la propria residenza dopo aver cambiato comune, oppure devono tornare nel luogo di origine per votare.     What Is a Good Imputation Under MAR Missingness?

    Missing values pose a persistent challenge in modern data science. Consequently, there is an ever-growing number of publications introducing new imputation methods in various fields. The present paper attempts to take a step back and provide a more systematic analysis. Starting from an in-depth discussion of the Missing at Random (MAR) condition for nonparametric imputation, we first develop an identification result showing that the widely used fully conditional specification (FCS) approach indeed identifies the correct conditional distributions. Based on this analysis, we propose three essential properties an ideal imputation method should meet, thus enabling a more principled evaluation of existing methods and more targeted development of new methods. In particular, we introduce a new imputation method, denoted mice-DRF, that meets two out of the three criteria. We also discuss ways to compare imputation methods, based on distributional distances. Finally, numerical experiments illustrate the points made in this discussion

    Optimised arylbiamidine derivative as potent in vivo antimelanoma agent: Drug-to-target approach reveals nanomolar GSK3β inhibition

    International audienceMelanoma, particularly in its metastatic form, remains highly lethal. Despite advancements in treatment, nearly half of melanoma patients experience therapeutic failure due to resistance. Consequently, the development of new antimelanoma drugs is critical for those unresponsive to current therapies. Here, we report the discovery of a potent antimelanoma scaffold and a promising inhibitor of glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β) through a drug-to-target approach. A phenotypic screening of arylbiamidine derivatives identified lead compound 35, N-(N-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)carbamimidoyl)pyrazine-2-carboximidamide, which exhibited the highest in vitro potency against melanoma cell lines and nanomolar inhibition of oncogenic GSK3β (IC 50 = 73.8 nM). Moreover, compound 35 demonstrated a favourable pharmacological profile, significantly reducing tumour growth in vivo in an A375 xenograft mouse model

    Here Comes the Sun! A Study on Sun Exposure and Associated Risks in the Canadian Population

    International audienceObjective: To evaluate the awareness of and attitudes toward various aspects of sun-exposure risks and protection methods among Canadians. Methods: An online survey conducted from September 28 to October 18, 2021, included 17,001 participants aged 18 years and above from 17 countries across 5 continents; the data presented are those of the Canadian population (n = 1,000). The survey focused on demographics, sun-exposure habits, comprehension of risks, and knowledge of photoprotection. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics to identify prevalent trends and discrepancies in sun-protective behaviours among Canadians. Results: The majority of Canadian respondents (93%) acknowledged the health risks associated with sun exposure. While 81% of Canadians reported using some form of sun protection, only 10% systematically implemented all recommended protective measures, highlighting a gap in knowledge translation. Misconceptions regarding the safety of tanned skin and the effectiveness of sunscreens were widespread, particularly in younger demographics and in individuals with darker skin. Knowledge and preventive behaviours were markedly better among individuals who regularly consult dermatologists. Conclusions: This study highlights general awareness of sun-protective behaviours but a lack of universal and comprehensive implementation among Canadians. Given the knowledge gaps in younger demographics and darker skin phototypes, targeted educational initiatives are essential to correct prevalent misconceptions about sun exposure and tanned skin. Dermatologists and other health care professionals can play a pivotal role in education and primary prevention strategies for skin cancer and other sun-related comorbidities

    Defining health promoting sports coaches skills: A systematic review

    International audienceSports coaches play a key role on sports participants’ health, due to the informal educational dimension inherent to sport, but feel limited in terms of health promotion (HP) implementation in their practices. The aim of this systematic mapping review is to identify coaches’ HP skills, which are already used in daily practice, and which they need to acquire, as well as leverages and barriers to their use. Based on PRISMA-P guidelines, six databases were searched using keywords close to sport coaching and skill and health. Inclusion criteria were 1) targeting organized grassroots sport coaches, 2) peer review English original articles, 3) discussing coaches’ skills. Among the 2485 studies found, 56 were included based on a double-blind selection. Analysis included: thematic coding of skills, followed by a categorization based on health determinants (social, environmental, economic and organizational) mobilized and an analysis of the types of health (social, physical and psychological) affected. Results identified ten coach's HP skills: sport participant management, health support, education, evaluation, motivation, cooperation, prevention, communication, role modeling and self-management. These skills are mostly targeting sport participant psychological health. Barriers included coaches’ own definition of the boundaries of their role, pressure from sport participants’ relatives. Leverages to skills use were self-confidence, attending training, getting experience, increasing knowledge or adhering to guidelines. Coaches’ HP skills are close both internal (e.g., self-management, role modeling) and external (in relations to sport participants or partners) and target mostly psychological health

    In 2024, research focused on the Côte-d'Or, in accordance with the recommendations of the CTRA. The work began following the initiation meeting on June 3, alongside the allocation of funding.The research team analyzed existing data (archives, collections, archaeological map, publications) in both archaeological and geological aspects, while also seeking out unpublished sources (documents, collections, oral testimonies). Published interpretations, such as those presented in the works of Martineau et al. (2015) and Djindjian (2023), depict a sparsely and discontinuously occupied territory, primarily in the karstic environment of the Burgundy jurassic sill, with limited scientific visibility.However, the initial extraction of the archaeological map revealed a higher density of information than anticipated, although these data were heavily influenced by earlier discoveries, particularly in areas like the Auxois, highlighting a research bias. The classification of raw data according to a reliability and resolution scale (0 to 5) confirmed the presence of several major sites not only in the Burgundy jurassic sill but also in the Bresse Basin.The study of collections revealed a greater number of Upper Paleolithic sites than previously recorded. Furthermore, some archaeological assemblages are absent from the archaeological map, despite its direct influence on preventive archaeology policies, which impacts the integration of new discoveries. Sedimentary records, however, indicate diverse and abundant occupations, challenging the notion of a sparsely populated Paleolithic landscape. Compared to neighboring regions such as Saône-et-Loire and Yonne districts, the low visibility of Paleolithic occupations in Côte-d'Or appears more related to the limitations of past research. Enhancing the detection of new sites through higher-resolution analyses thus becomes a crucial objective for a better understanding of the region's prehistoric occupation.Geomorphological studies conducted in the Bresse Basin suggest the existence of at least two lacustrine levels (at 220–230 m and 210–200 m), tentatively attributed to MIS 8–10 and MIS 6, respectively. The filling and draining episodes of these water bodies appear to be linked to fluctuations of the Alpine glacial front in the Lyon region. The incision of the current hydrographic network began during MIS 5 through regressive erosion. Within this accommodation space, relatively small alluvial terraces developed, including the lower sandy terrace (Fy) formed at the end of MIS 3, followed by late tardiglacial fine deposits (Caille clays).En 2024, les recherches se sont concentrées sur la Côte-d’Or, conformément aux recommandations de la CTRA. Les travaux ont commencé après la réunion d’initiation du 3 juin, en parallèle de l’attribution de la subvention.L’équipe a analysé les données existantes (archives, collections, carte archéologique, publications) sur les volets archéologique et géologique, tout en recherchant des sources inédites (documents, collections, témoignages). Les interprétations publiées, comme celles des ouvrages de Martineau et al. (2015) et Djindjian (2023), décrivent une occupation faible et discontinue, surtout dans le seuil de Bourgogne en milieu karstique, avec une valorisation scientifique limitée.Cependant, l’extraction initiale de la carte archéologique a révélé une densité d’informations plus élevée qu’attendu, bien que ces données soient fortement influencées par d’anciennes découvertes, notamment dans des secteurs comme l’Auxois, révélant un biais de recherche. Le classement des données selon une grille de fiabilité (0 à 5) a confirmé l’existence de plusieurs sites majeurs, non seulement dans le seuil de Bourgogne, mais aussi dans le bassin bressan.L’étude des collections a révélé davantage de sites du Paléolithique supérieur que recensés jusqu’ici. De plus, certaines séries archéologiques n’apparaissent pas dans la carte archéologique, bien qu’elle oriente les décisions en archéologie préventive, ce qui freine l’intégration des nouvelles découvertes. Les enregistrements sédimentaires montrent pourtant des occupations variées, remettant en question l’idée d’un territoire faiblement peuplé. Par comparaison avec la Saône-et-Loire et l’Yonne, la faible visibilité du paysage paléolithique en Côte-d’Or semble davantage liée aux limites des recherches passées. Améliorer la détection de nouveaux sites avec des analyses plus fines devient donc un enjeu clé pour mieux comprendre l’occupation préhistorique de la région.Les études géomorphologiques menées dans le Bassin bressan tendent à confirmer l’existence d’au moins 2 niveaux lacustres (à 220 - 230 m et à 210 - 200 m) attribués pour l’instant aux MIS 8-10 et au MIS 6. Les épisodes de remplissage et de vidange de ces plans d’eau semblent pouvoir être mis en relation avec les fluctuations du front glaciaire alpin dans la région lyonnaise. Le creusement du réseau hydrographique actuel commence à partir du MIS 5 par érosion régressive. Au sein de cet espace d’accomodation des nappes alluviales peu étendues se sont étagées, principalement la basse terrasse sableuse (Fy) mise en place à la fin du MIS 3, puis les dépôts fins tardi-holocènes (argiles de la Caille)
