Interiors that draw: the in-between spaces for the sake of the experimental

The gap between representation and embodied experimentation in contemporary design practices has distanced the design process from lived experience, while also opening new possibilities for experimental engagement through drawing. This gap has been explored through representational works–such as paper or visionary architecture–as well as through installations, performances, and happenings. Although these categories (“the experiment in the space of drawing” and “the experiment in bodily space”) differ significantly, they share fundamental qualities, such as being research- and criticism-focused and having an interdisciplinary nature, which are also common in Armstrong’s research on “experimental architecture.” Following a review of the literature on representation and embodied experience, this paper examines the concept of the "experimental interior" through the juxtaposition of drawing and installation art–both of which generate knowledge through experimentation and their unique spatiality. These practices are theorized as ways to transcend limited definitions of drawing and interior–conventionally confined to mental-material and interior-exterior binaries–by proposing them as “interiors that draw.” Such interiors are framed, in Armstrongian terms, as “wicked experiments” that address uncertainty, the unknown, and complexity through materially engaged, speculative designerly ways. By focusing on experimental interiors through “interiors that draw” as wicked experiments in interdisciplinary artistic research, this paper aims to highlight their capacity to foster agile designerly approaches. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

Cognitive reserve relates to successful aging: A cross-sectional study focusing on psychological well-being and daily living activities in the elderly

The increasingly aging population worldwide brings public health more into prominence. As reflecting the individual differences to effectively use brain regions and be resilient against age-related neural losses, cognitive reserve (CR) can play a crucial role in promoting both psychological and physical aspects of successful aging. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between CR, successful aging, psychological well-being, and physical independence in a sample of healthy elderly. Ninety-two elderly (aged 65–88) with normal cognition participated in the study. Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire (CRIq), Successful Aging Scale (SAS), Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBSE), and Lawton Instrumental Daily Living Activities Scale (IADL) were used. Sociodemographic information was also collected. The analyses revealed that CR was significantly associated with the total SAS, PWSBE, and IADL scores. In addition, income level appeared to be a significant mediator between CR and PWBSE and SAS. Overall, our findings indicate that a stronger CR may support successful aging and serve as a protective factor for psychological well-being and physical independence during old age. © 2025 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

Edited by J. Patrick Williams, Interpreting Subcultures: Approaching, Contextualizing, and Embodying Sense-Making Practices in Alternative Cultures offers a comprehensive analysis of subcultures through interpretive practices and invites fresh perspectives on canonical readings in subcultural studies by challenging established concepts in the field. It gathers the work of 15 researchers from diverse geographies, all of whom employ various interpretive approaches to explore how subcultures are defined and expressed, highlighting how subcultural identities and practices are formed, experienced and interpreted

    Continuous dependence of thermoelasticity problem

    No full text
The current study considers the initial boundary value problem for the thermoelastic model. The model in which heat conduction is given by Green and Naghdi’s theory is called Type II. It is increasingly accepted that studying the structural stability of the initial boundary value problem is crucial. This is because even minor changes in the equation or its coefficients can lead to significant variations in the solution of the problem. From this point of view, we analyze the structural stability of the solutions, specifically examining the continuous dependence of the solutions on all the coefficients of the thermoelastic system, using the energy method. © TÜBİTA

A comprehensive exploration of outdoor learning (ODL) environments in primary school education

    No full text
Numerous studies highlight the potential of outdoor learning (ODL)environments, yet there remains a gap in the literature regardinga holistic understanding of their use in Turkish primary schools fromboth teachers’ and students’ perspectives. To address this gap, thisstudy employed a phenomenological approach, conducting semi-structured interviews with 24 students and 12 teachers. Data wereanalyzed using content analysis. The study findings offer valuableinsights into ODL perceptions, benefits, and implementation chal-lenges. ODL environments foster positive learning attitudes, enhance social skills, improve retention, and provide experientiallearning opportunities. However, various challenges, such as pro-longed bureaucratic procedures, financial constraints, and curricu-lum integration difficulties, often hinder the effective use of ODL,leading to hesitancy even among supportive teachers. The resultsemphasize the need to streamline bureaucratic processes, integrateODL into the curriculum, and provide comprehensive teacher train-ing, alongside a thorough review of policies and curricular docu-ments to ensure optimal implementation

Parkin Gen Mutasyonu Olan ve Olmayan Parkinson Hastalarında Fonksiyonel Bağlantının Karşılaştırılması

    No full text
Introduction: Mapping the functional connectivity of brain regions became appealing in recent research in neurology. Accordingly, a growing body of evidence shows resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) changes in neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson’s Disease (PD). As characterised by extensive and progressive dopaminergic loss in the substantia nigra, PD emerges with serious motor and non-motor dysfunctions. In the literature, the minority of PD cases have been associated with certain genetic mutations. The aim of this study was to investigate the rsFC in a group of PD patients having Parkin gene mutation. Method: Twelve PD patients with Parkin mutation (PP-PD), 12 PD patients without Parkin mutation (PN-PD) and 12 healthy controls (HC) were included in the study. All participants underwent a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging as well as a neuropsychological assessment and clinical examination. Results: Results indicated that PP-PD had longer disease duration, a higher rate of dyskinesia and lower scores on complex visual perception tests. The resting state networks showed that all PD (consisting of PP-PD and PN-PD) and PP-PD groups had increased functional connectivity in the frontoparietal network as compared to the HC. In addition, the PP-PD group displayed decreased functional connectivity in the dorsal attention network compared to the PN-PD. Conclusion: In conclusion, our data suggests that PD with Parkin gene mutation might be emerging with distinct resting state functional connectivity changes in the brain. © 2024 by Turkish Association of Neuropsychiatry

Challenging the Gender Regime through Small-scale Activism: Alternative Citizen-Led Projects in Kurdistan/Türkiye

    No full text
This article investigates local initiatives among women in Kurdistan/Türkiye and labels them “small-scale activism,” and reports that they offer an alternative to state and party feminism, as well as to civil society organizations. We argue that, through small-scale political acts, women work on several levels simultaneously. First, their actions grow out of a dissatisfaction with the existing gender regime created by an interplay between various macro- and micro-forces (such as state structures, societal norms, economic opportunities, violence), producing structural inequalities. Second, the projects can be seen as political acts that simultaneously challenge or evade state oppression and Kurdish alternative politics. These micro-interventions grew in importance with the implementation of the Trustee system after the 2016 failed military coup. Theoretically, we position small-scale activism between social movement and social non-movement and show how it challenges the gender regime in the context of an authoritarian state and violent conflict

Zeynep'in varlığını görmek bizi yatıştırıyor. Her şeye merakla bakıyoruz, her şeyin üzerinde konuşuyoruz, bazen gördüklerimizi anılarımızla bağdaştırıyoruz. Zeynep, hocaya benziyor. Zeynep'in onayından geçen sayfaları belirliyoruz. Cümlelerini seçiyoruz ve GA'nın Aklında Bir Seyir masasının temelini atıyoruz
