    Reducing Nurses’ Emotional Exhaustion and Turnover Intentions: The Role of Prosocial Orientation and Perceived Patient Gratitude in a Moderated Mediation Model

    Aims: This study investigates the relationship between prosocial orientation and turnover intention among Italian nurses, examining the mediating role of emotional exhaustion and the moderating effect of perceived patient gratitude.Design: Cross-sectional quantitative study.Methods: A sample of 162 nurses employed in Italian hospitals completed an online survey on the Qualtrics platform assessing prosocial orientation, patient gratitude, emotional exhaustion, and turnover intention. Data were analyzed through a moderated mediation model via the PROCESS macro in JASP.Results: Prosocial orientation was negatively associated with turnover intention, with emotional exhaustion acting as a mediator in this relationship. Perceived patient gratitude moderated the impact of prosocial orientation on emotional exhaustion. The conditional indirect effect of prosocial orientation on turnover intention through emotional exhaustion was significant at average and high levels of patient gratitude, but not at low levels.Conclusion: The findings suggest that fostering prosocial orientation perceptions and enhancing patient gratitude and its perceptions can mitigate emotional exhaustion and reduce turnover intentions among nurses.Implications for Nursing Management: Healthcare organizations can promote prosocial orientation and patient gratitude through training, feedback, and recognition events to reduce nurses' emotional exhaustion and turnover

    Click Analytical Chemistry Index as a Novel Concept and Framework, Supported with Open Source Software to Assess Analytical Methods

    Click analytical chemistry (CAC) is a novel approach inspired by the principles of click chemistry, emphasizing simplicity, efficiency, and reliability. While click chemistry revolutionized synthetic methods, CAC aims to enhance chemical analysis by providing a framework for method assessment from a different perspective, focusing on improving the practicality and applicability of analytical techniques. In this work, we present the Click Analytical Chemistry Index (CACI) as a practical and user-friendly tool that provides both a metric and software solution for evaluating analytical methods. The software is available as an open source at bit.ly/caci2024. The CACI system allows for objective and unbiased comparisons between techniques, encouraging the development of methods that are easier to implement without sacrificing performance. By promoting simplicity and practicality in method design, CACI supports the development of analytical procedures that not only meet rigorous performance standards but also simplify the analytical process. This work explores the principles and methodology of CAC and presents case studies that demonstrate its practical applications in advancing chemical analysis towards more efficient method development and evaluation

    INTEGRATING ECONOMIC OPTIMIZATION AND LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT IN ITALIAN WHEAT FARMING: A WEB-BASED INTERFACE

    This work presents a freely accessible web interface designed to enhance awareness among local stakeholders regarding the environmental footprint of wheat production. Users input key parameters, including province, altimetry, expected wheat selling price, and fertilizer, herbicide, and insecticide unit costs. Upon submission, the system calculates the expected yield per hectare and the required input levels that maximize profit under three distinct climatic conditions: favorable, normal, and unfavorable. The computations are based on an economic maximization framework. The parameters are estimated at the province-altimetry level using approximately 20,000 observations of durum wheat-producing farms from 2008 to 2022 taken from the Rete di Informazione Contabile Agricola (RICA). Finally, the computed input levels are integrated into a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to quantify key environmental sustainability indicators

    The human microbiota: a double-edged sword against the ‘Sword of Damocles’ in PDAC diagnosis and therapy

    Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is currently a major oncological threat given the very low 5-year survival rates of 8-9%. The tumor itself is intertwined with its surrounding tissue in a peculiar tumoral microenvironment (TME) which contributes to resistance against the host immune system and traditional clinical treatments, such as chemotherapy. One of the components of TME is the microbiota, which mainly includes the bacterial species identified in the tumor tissue at various stages. Current literature highlights an active role of the microbiota in tumorigenesis, progression, metastasis, and chemotherapy response in PDAC patients. This review gathered the most recent findings about microbial composition in PDAC patients, along with the effects of intra and extra-tumoral (GI and oral) microbial species on the TME and immune system, their role in tumor progression and immuno-modulation. This paper provides an insight on the potential use of microbes as diagnostic and prognostic markers, and as an additional therapeutic strategy. The study of microbiota offer new ways to slow down carcinogenesis, modulate the immune response, and even serve as an early diagnostic tool in the absence of specific serum markers. In the current review we will offer an inquiry on these potential roles. We sorted out the most recent literature with a comprehensive and critical approach, sourcing papers from PubMed. We exclusively opted for papers that were published in the last 5 years on journals with IF≥4, with a focus on the impact of intra-tumoral microbiome on the natural history of PDAC, from pre-tumoral lesions to metastasis

    The Bronze Door of San Clemente a Casauria and its Monumental and Environmental Context

    La porta bronzea di San Clemente a Casauria (Pescara) venne realizzata poco dopo il 1182, durante la fase conclusiva dei lavori di ricostruzione del complesso monastico dopo il devastante saccheggio perpetrato dal normanno Ugo Malmozzetto nel 1079. L’opera è costituita da due battenti alti quasi quattro metri, scanditi in dodici registri orizzontali e quattro file verticali, per un totale di settantadue formelle, inserite in una griglia regolare di cornici piatte. Le uniche figure si trovano nel primo registro dove compaiono San Clemente, l’imperatore Ludovico II che fondò il cenobio, re Guglielmo II e l’abate Giole, il committente della porta. Le altre formelle contengono motivi simbolici e una serie di castelli che rappresentano i possedimenti dell’abbazia. L’analisi dell’apparato decorativo, unico nel panorama delle porte bronzee medievali, rivela come questo sia parte integrante del programma scultoreo della facciata e del portico dove viene celebrato il mito delle origini dell’istituzione e la predestinazione del luogo

    Preliminary study on ex vivo efficacy of curcumin‐silver nanoparticles as a treatment of human pterygium-derived keratinocytes

    Pterygium is a progressive disease of the human eye in which an invasive growth arises from the sub-conjunctival tissue and extends onto the cornea, eventually reaching the pupil and compromising visual function. This disease is commonly diffused in human population living in the tropical region with an average incidence of 7 % of cases in India, Singapore and China and peaks of 30 % in Japan. The available surgical or pharmacological treatments are only partially successful in stopping the disease and imply a great risk of aggressive relapse. The proposed inorganic nanoparticles conjugated with curcumin have demonstrably been able to reduce of 30 % ± 0.2 % the vitality of pterygium keratinocytes extracted by affected patients, thus offering an alternative therapeutic option for the containment of this human disease

    Basic psychological needs satisfaction, coping functions, and emotional experiences in competitive athletes: a multi-states theory perspective

    The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between basic psychological needs satisfaction, coping functions, cognitive appraisals, emotions, and psychobiosocial experiences in competitive athletes. Multi-states (MuSt) theory was used as the theoretical framework. The study involved a convenience sample of 183 Italian athletes (102 men), aged 16 to 48 years (M = 24.86, SD = 7.42), who were engaged in individual or team sports. The results showed that basic psychological needs satisfaction was positively related to problem-focused and emotion-focused coping, challenge appraisal, pleasant emotions, and functional psychobiosocial experiences, while negatively linked to threat appraisal and unpleasant emotions. Furthermore, problem-focused and emotion-focused coping were positively related to challenge appraisal, pleasant emotions, and functional psychobiosocial experiences, while negatively related to threat appraisal and unpleasant emotions. Path analysis findings showed positive indirect effects via problem-focused coping and challenge appraisal from both competence and relatedness to excitement, happiness, and functional psychobiosocial experiences. The results highlight the impact of basic psychological needs satisfaction, coping functions, and cognitive appraisals on athletes' emotional experiences. Overall findings support MuSt theoretical underpinnings and suggest that athletes who experience competence, autonomy, and relatedness are likely to adopt adaptive coping, view challenges as growth opportunities, experience pleasant emotions, and undergo functional psychobiosocial experiences. From an applied perspective, practitioners should prioritize basic psychological needs satisfaction in athlete development programs to foster functional coping, challenge appraisal, optimal emotional experiences, and performance
