Fra tradizione e postmodernità: etnografia su usi alimentari e raccolte campestri
Il contributo analizza il foraging tra passato e presente nel contesto abruzzese e attraverso il complesso rapporto tra città e territorio circostante. Negli ultimi trent'anni, l'agricoltura suburbana e la raccolta spontanea di piante e verdure della tradizione gastronomica locale sono quasi scomparse. In alcune aree urbane dell'Abruzzo, oggi le resistenze culturali e gli interessi neo-rurali influenzano l'alimentazione delle famiglie, riaprendo le porte alla raccolta e al consumo delle verdure selvatiche. La ricerca qualitativa qui illustrata può aggiungere un tassello alla nuova stagione di ricerca relativa a queste connessioni tra territori e persone
Exploring the contribution of gray matter microstructure to R1 contrast via multi-compartment diffusion modelling in the healthy brain
The Soma And Neurite Density Imaging (SANDI) model enhances MRI-derived water diffusion metrics sensitivity to gray matter (GM) microstructural complexity. We investigated the hypothesis that the diffusion metrics derived from the SANDI three-compartment model contributed to the longitudinal relaxation rate R1(=1/T1) contrast in brain tissue. To this aim, twenty healthy volunteers underwent diffusion-weighted imaging and R1 mapping via MP2RAGE at 3 T. The diffusion metrics included intra-neurite signal fraction (fneurite), intra-soma signal fraction (fsoma), extra-neurite fraction (fextra), soma radii (Rsoma), and intra-neurite and extra-neurite diffusivities (Din and De). In GM, a moderate negative spatial correlation was observed between R1 and soma-related metrics (fsoma and Rsoma, with r =-0.47,-0.35, respectively), indicating that GM microstructure contributes to R1 contrast. These findings align with evidence suggesting structural heterogeneity in the cortex, where a different degree of cortical myelination modulates neuroplasticity. Notably, similar effects and trends were identified when evaluating across subjects' correlations of the metrics of interest (fsoma and Rsoma, with r =-0.56,-0.48, respectively). In WM, moderate to strong positive spatial correlations were observed between R1 and intra-neurite metrics (Din and fneurite, with r = 0.53, 0.30, respectively), where myelinated axons host the pool of intraneurite water. These results suggest that WM and GM microstructural characteristics contribute to the R1 contrast, where R1 depends, among other factors, to the degree of myelination within brain tissues, thus contributing to the understanding of the emerging relaxation differences across the brain parenchyma. Future research should explore these relationships in clinical populations with demyelination and neurodegeneration
Emerging strategies and clinical recommendations for the management of novel depression subtypes
Introduction: The phenomenology of depression is characterized by a wide array of emotional, cognitive, and physical symptoms that significantly disrupt an individual’s life. Societal changes, driven by technological advancements, economic pressures, environmental concerns including climate change, and shifting cultural norms, have influenced how depression manifests and is understood. These developments have led to the identification of new depression subtypes, highlighting the need for personalized treatment approaches based on individual symptoms and underlying causes. Areas covered: The authors provide a comprehensive narrative review of the literature on managing novel depression subtypes, focusing on both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. Specifically, scenarios recorded were related to i) depression in adolescents and young adults; ii) depression and social disconnection; iii) depression and alcohol/substance use disorder; iv) depression and gender dysphoria; v) depression, stressful events, and other environmental factors. Expert opinion: In the novel depression subtypes discussed, individualized treatment approaches tailored to the individual’s specific circumstances are necessary. While selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) remain the cornerstone of treatment for many forms of depression, atypical antidepressants such as trazodone, and emerging therapies like ketamine, neuromodulation techniques, and personalized psychotherapy offer hope for those with complex or treatment-resistant presentations
Dermatological adverse events during hematological and oncological therapies (Bruton’s tyrosine kinase inhibitors and mogamulizumab): an Italian retrospective multicenter study
Background: Bruton's Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (BTKIs) and mogamulizumab have revolutionized the treatment of hematologic malignancies, yet they are frequently associated with dermatologic adverse events (dAEs) that can impact patient quality of life and adherence. The aim is to evaluate the incidence, clinical features, and management of dAEs associated with BTKIs and mogamulizumab across multiple Italian dermatology centers. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, multicenter study involving 80 patients treated with BTKIs or mogamulizumab from January to December 2024. Patients were stratified into three cohorts: mogamulizumab (MOG), ibrutinib (IBR), and other BTKIs. dAEs were assessed for type, location, severity (CTCAE v5.0), duration, and treatment outcomes. Results: Eczema-like rashes were most frequent in BTKI-treated patients (43.2% in IBR; 22.2% in other BTKIs), while mogamulizumab was primarily associated with morbilliform rashes (36%). The mean duration of dAEs was under six months across all cohorts, with most cases graded as mild. Topical corticosteroids and emollients were the mainstay of treatment. Remission rates were 64% (MOG), 89.2% (IBR), and 83.3% (other BTKIs), with few cases of progression. Conclusions: dAEs are common but manageable side effects of BTKIs and mogamulizumab. Dermatologic surveillance and early treatment are crucial for optimizing patient outcomes. Multidisciplinary collaboration is essential to prevent misdiagnosis and treatment interruptions, especially in cases of mogamulizumab-associated rash
Risk and Protective Factors for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome Throughout Lifespan: From Pregnancy to Adolescence
Background: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in children is indeed a significant and often underdiagnosed condition. The risk factors for OSAS vary across different stages of life. Objectives: Identifying risk factors early can help in taking preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of developing OSAS, and different life stages may require different interventions. Results: During pregnancy, maternal factors such as obesity, smoking, and genetic predispositions can increase the risk of OSAS, while breastfeeding serves as a protective factor. For children aged 2 to 12, adenotonsillar hypertrophy is the primary cause of airway narrowing, with other contributing factors including obesity, craniofacial abnormalities, and increased nasal resistance. In adolescence, obesity and craniofacial abnormalities remain the main risk factors. Conclusions: By reviewing and understanding these risk factors, healthcare providers can offer more personalized and effective care, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for individuals at all stages of life
Impact of Architectural Styles on Acoustic Characteristics in Selected European Churches
This study explores the acoustic properties of European Churches, influenced by architectural design, historical context, and spatial configurations. A comparative analysis of 83 Churches from different regions and periods combines literature reviews and empirical data to understand the interplay between architecture and acoustics. Key geometric parameters—volume, surface area, length, height, and aisle count—were compared with acoustic metrics to provide a comprehensive view of these sacred spaces. The study identified the key factors influencing acoustic characteristics, uncovering significant variability within the same architectural style. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) further highlighted distinct patterns and outliers, showing that Gothic, Neoclassical, and modern architectural styles possess unique acoustic signatures. These findings challenge the assumption of uniform acoustics within similar styles, revealing that even minor architectural differences can substantially impact sound behavior. Outliers were particularly informative, representing Churches with unique acoustic properties, which shed light on how specific design elements affect sound propagation. The study underscores the complexity of the relationship between architecture and acoustics in Churches and suggests that further research should consider both quantitative measures and subjective experiences to fully capture the acoustic environment of these historic spaces

Cold atmospheric plasma activated media selectively affects human head and neck cancer cell lines
Objective: Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a novel therapeutic approach for cancer treatment. It can be used to treat liquids – plasma-activated media (PAM) - which are then transferred to the target as an exogenous source of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). The present study aimed at chemically characterizing different PAM and assessing their in vitro selectivity against head and neck cancer cells (HNC).
Methods: PAM were obtained by exposing 2 and 5 mL of medium to CAP for 5, 10 and 20 minutes at a 6 mm working distance. Anions kinetics was evaluated by ion chromatography. In addition, the inhibition of cell proliferation by MTS assaying, while apoptosis occurrence and cell cycle modifications were assessed by flow cytometry on human epidermal keratinocytes (HaCaT) and HNC cell lines including HSC2, HSC4 and A253. .
Results: The 2 mL conditions showed a significant reduction in cell proliferation whereas for the 5 mL the effect was milder, but the time-dependence was more evident. In addition, HaCaT were unaffected by the 5 mL PAM, indicating a selectivity for cancer cells.
Conclusions: The media chemical composition modified by CAP exposure influenced cell proliferation by modulating cell cycle and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells, without affecting normal cells
