Geomagnetic Excursions Recorded in North Atlantic IODP Expedition 395C Sites U1555 and U1563
By studying deep-sea drilled records from the North Atlantic Ocean, several magnetic instabilities of short duration, such as the Iceland Basin (188 ka), the Bj & ouml;rn (1,255 ka) and the Gardar (1,460 ka) excursions, were discovered. These records have contributed to our understanding of Earth's magnetic field and are the foundation of the Geomagnetic Instability Time Scale (GITS) in the Quaternary. Here, we present the magnetostratigraphy from Sites U1555 (0 to similar to 2.7 Ma) and U1563 (0 to similar to 5.2 Ma) drilled during the International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 395C on the eastern side of the modern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (similar to 60 degrees N, 20-30 degrees W). Shipboard paleomagnetic and microfossil data provided a preliminary age model, extending the regional record to 3.4 Ma. The Virtual Geomagnetic Pole latitudes from archive halves, corroborated with data from discrete samples, were used to build a high-resolution magnetostratigraphy, which contained the expected Brunhes and Matuyama Chrons and their respective Subchrons. We also identified most of the magnetic events reported in the GITS, including the less well-documented ones, such as Osaka, Kamitzukara, Huckleberry Ridge, Reunion, Gardar, Halawa and L4 events. The high-resolution magnetostratigraphy from Sites U1555 and U1563 is compared with two previous legacy sites and contributes toward an increasingly robust GITS, expanding its use as a correlation and dating tool
Water Redistribution in The Body and Muscles of Young Athletes After a Single Workout Complemented by Water Intake
Background and aim: Individuals practising a sporting activity in the long term show significant changes in the relative masses of fat tissue and other water-containing physiological structures, particularly muscles. Such longitudinal changes of the body composition activated and sustained by sports practices are documented to be health-promoting (in non-agonistic) and performance-improving (in agonistic). However, short-time mass indices variation after each session of sporting activity is limited and inconclusive. It would be worth assessing the effectiveness of the training protocol in sports players for real-time interventions. Hence, our study primarily aims at establishing a post-session evaluation of body index variation. Furthermore, it aims to clarify how a specific training modality affects the body compartments and if the changes affect men and women to the same extent or not. Methods: The study includes 100 healthy young adult athletes showing a 2:1 male-to-female ratio of near age. Hence, one male cohort (N=62, average age: 27.17±5.25 years) and one female cohort (N=38, age: 26.52±5.37 years) were considered for the comparative analysis of the data. Each participant gave the informed consent to undergo two BIA measurements, one pre- and one post- a single training session, within not more than 3 hours apart. At this aim, weight (W), height (H), body mass index (BMI), and the following body composition compartments Fat Mass (FM), Fat-free Mass (FFM, lean mass), Skeletal Muscle Mass (SSM), Total Body Water (TBW), and Extracellular Water (ECW) have been measured and their relative changes analyzed. Intracellular water (ICW) was calculated as TBW-minus-ECW. Conclusion: Given equivalent training conditions we found changes in body composition between pre- and post-session of one single training showed, for each index, the reduction of ECW, and the increase of inferred ICW. The short-term bioimpedance evaluation shown here might be useful in identifying the hydration mode and type of training able to impede dehydration of muscle cells during each exercise session to monitor and improve overall athletes’ muscle performance in competitions and, in the general population at risk of muscle function decline, to prevent dehydration and loss of muscle cells
Association between salivary /microbiological parameters, oral health and eating habits in young athletes
Background: Athletes’ oral health can impact overall well-being
and sports performance. This study aimed to evaluate the interactions
between eating habits and oral health of 120 young athletes
as compared to 30 age-matched individuals not practicing sports
based on a questionnaire and the analysis of saliva.
Methods: One hundred twenty subjects practicing various sports
activities (test group) and 30 subjects not practicing sports (control
group) were selected. A self-administered questionnaire was used
to obtain personal data, hours and frequency of weekly training,
complete pathological history, history of hard and soft tissues of the
oral cavity, family history, and oral hygiene practices. The eating
habits of the young participants were analyzed by investigating the
number of daily meals; use and frequency in sports practice of
supplements/energy drinks, fruit/juices, snacks, chocolate; daily
diet; and differences between usual diet and pre-competition diet.
At baseline (T0), each participant was clinically assessed for the
determination of the number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth
(DMFT), Silness & Löe Plaque Index (PI), and the Löe & Silness
Gingival Index (GI) and qualitative analysis for the presence/
absence of stains and dental erosions. At T0, before (T1) and after
training sessions (T2), saliva was collected to determine resting pH,
Streptococcus mutans, and Lactobacillus spp counts.
Results: Test groups were trained more than 2 h, 5 times
a week. Soccer players and skiers had a high percentage of
caries; water polo players demonstrated the highest percentage
of erosions and dental stains. Salivary resting pH showed statistically
different values in three different observations
between the groups. S. mutans was harbored by 60% of soccer
and 70% of water polo players, while Lactobacillus spp in
43.33% of the swimmers and soccer players. Combining all the
56 variables including the clinical examination, self-reported
parameters, and salivary analysis, we have identified water
polo players as a distinct at-risk group for developing dental
defects, expressed as an aggregate disease score. In particular,
we have found that energy snacks/chocolate intake is strongly
associated with ratio of S. mutans/Lactobacillus spp and that
S. mutans is linked to dental defects (R = 0.88). Linear regression
analysis indicates that energy snacks/chocolate intake in the
study population represents a strong driver for oral dysbiosis
and dental disease.
Conclusions: Our study clearly shows that athletes should follow
a balanced diet that not only satisfies their nutritional needs but
also avoids oral dysbiosis and subsequent dental damage

La storia della rappresentazione testimonia in più modi come l’arte e la scienza, utilizzando le tecnoculture dei tempi in cui si sono trovate a operare, abbiano elaborato diversi sistemi di visualizzazione e differenti estetiche dei linguaggi grafici che, trasformando dati e sentimenti in immagini, ipotizzano anche processi di discretizzazione inversi. In
altre parole, il tema della traduzione in forma visiva della complexity and contradiction (citando Robert Venturi) del mondo, filosofica necessità dell’essere umano, ha sempre generato progetti di rappresentazione e caratterizzato sperimentazioni di diversi
linguaggi espressivi ma anche di strumenti di rilevamento, analisi e controllo.
Emerge così il principale obiettivo di questa ricerca, ovvero, la sperimentazione di alcune delle potenzialità offerte dalla IA di tradurre dati e informazioni in immagini e viceversa. Abbiamo così esplorato i processi di ibridazione culturale e riciclaggio estetico propri
della tecnocultura oggi disponibile elaborando nuovi modelli semantici come mappe da esplorare e interpretare, interessanti laboriosità di natura interdisciplinare che producono conoscenze crossmediali intrecciando narrazioni analogiche con innovativi sistemi algoritmici di simulazione e configurazione
Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in the management of pediatric renal injuries: where are we now?
Purpose: Experience with CEUS in management of kidney post-traumatic injuries is limited, especially in pediatric age. This paper aimed to identify: clinical settings in which CEUS could be used as first diagnostic tool, skipping CT; CEUS ability to detect complications during non-operative management (NOM); and CEUS role in patients with collecting system injuries. Methods: Patients with renal trauma admitted between 2003 and 2023 were enrolled in a retrospective study. At T0, CT was performed in case of high-energy trauma, CT or CEUS in case of low-energy or/and localized trauma. CEUS was used during follow up (FU) in case of suspected complications and to follow healing of the lesions and urinomas. Results: Among 22 patients included, at T0 20/22 performed CT, 1/22 CEUS and 1/22 baseline US. During NOM CEUS was necessary: in early FU to rule out complications in 3/22 (1 anemization and 2 hematuria); in middle FU in 14/22 to authorize mobilization/discharge and monitor urinomas; in outpatient setting in 2/22, to authorize return to sport activities. Overall, a collecting system injury was detected in 6 patients by CT and in 1 by CEUS. In 3/7 a perirenal urinoma developed. All were monitored with CEUS or baseline US. Conclusions: CEUS is useful as first imaging study in low-energy and localized trauma, but confidence with CEUS is still to be improved and spread, to replace CT in selected cases. CEUS is valuable for detecting complications, avoiding repeat CT in most of cases. In expert hands CEUS can identify and monitor leakage indirectly

OPTIMIZATION OF ADDITIVELY MANUFACTURED METAL DAMPERS
This paper presents a novel typology of metallic energy dissipation device (damper) for seismic protection of buildings, distinguished by its capacity to independently modulate strength and stiffness parameters. This objective is accomplished through the implementation of non-standard geometries, enabled by advanced additive manufacturing techniques and informed by topological optimization methodologies. These methods are applied to conventional baseline geometries, chosen to preserve a pre-determined stiffness level. The optimization process strategically reduces the yielding strength of the original configuration without compromising its initial stiffness, allowing the damper to engage its energy dissipation function under low seismic demand. At the same time, the maintained high stiffness ensures the capacity of the damper of attracting seismic forces when is integrated into structural frames during earthquake events. Two type of devices are proposed: they are engineered to operate under axial and torsional loading conditions and are derived from spherical and cylindrical baseline geometries, respectively. Numerical models are developed in ABAQUS environment, where, by applying topological and geometrical optimization algorithms, the yielding strength is reduced by 50% while preserving the original stiffness characteristics. The results confirm that the optimized dampers, for both investigated geometries, meet the design targets in terms of strength and stiffness, highlighting their potential effectiveness in seismic energy dissipation
