Get PDFThe wealth of source material produced by Roman notaries has long been neglected. Only in recent decades has it been systematically evaluated by researchers. Given the fragmentary source situation in general, these atti notarili add considerable detail to our knowledge of everyday life. They provide insights not only into the Rome of the popes, which has received considerable attention, but above all into the Rome of the Roman people, much less studied. This paper focuses not on another notary, but on the question of the potential contribution of this genre of sources to the history of late medieval Rome. We see how clients belonging to different social groups approach different notaries. We understand the typical concerns and problems of Roman society, ranging from the debtor imprisoned in a dungeon to the Colonna family in their palazzo. We find confident Florentines with their business dealings, German bakers and their partnership contracts, impoverished monasteries with their growing debts. We see the building boom of the Renaissance and how Piazza Navona is transformed from a campus into a platea, as well as rural Rome within the walls and its countless vineyards
What's in a Name? The Meaning of Zeitenwende for German Politics
Get PDFIn light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for a Zeitenwende signalling a departure from Germany's long-standing non-military and responsible foreign policy. But, what does Zeitenwende mean to the policymakers implementing it? This paper conceptualises Zeitenwende as a legitimation frame for politicians to explain and justify changes in Germany's stance towards European security governance. Through the analysis of a dataset of speeches held in the German Bundestag since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the study explores the meaning policymakers attribute to Zeitenwende and how the concept has been used as a framing device by German politicians. It finds that Zeitenwende served as a successful justificatory frame for legitimizing foreign policy changes across political parties. The paper concludes by highlighting the broader relevance of these findings for international relations scholars and students of European security, offering insights into norm contestation and norm decay in the context of European conflict dynamics

Get PDFDie malerische Ausstattung des Marmorsaals im Neuen Palais war der letzte große Auftrag Friedrichs II. auf diesem Gebiet. Ihre Entstehungsgeschichte begann 1755 und erstreckte sich bis 1768. Die Gestaltung dieses zentralen Festraums bezieht sich auf die Einrichtung des Marmorsaals im Potsdamer Stadtschloss. Friedrich II. ließ hier eine schon im 17. Jahrhundert begonnene Dekoration 1752 mit einer allegorischen Huldigung eines Ahnen, des Kurfürsten Friedrich Wilhelm, der sogenannte Große Kurfürst, und dessen Verdienste für Brandenburg-Preußen vollenden. Dem architektonisch ähnlich gestalteten Marmorsaal im Neuen Palais verlieh der König mit zeitgenössischen französischen Gemälden und mythologischen Inhalten einen zeitgemäßen Ausdruck. Bei näherer Betrachtung enthüllt sich dem belesenen Publikum aber ein satirischer Hintersinn, der typisch ist für das Denken und den Humor Friedrichs II., der sich als aufgeklärt begriff und darstellte
