Whistleblowing about critical issues by care staff is an essential component of any well-functioning health care system. During a pandemic, rapid communication of critical information is essential to identify and solve problems. In times of crisis, however, this kind of communication is difficult. In the province of Quebec, Canada, testimonies from nurses, licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and other health professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic indicate that the province’s health care settings have met whistleblowers’ concerns with insufficient corrective measures and, in some cases, retaliation against whistleblowers themselves. This crisis led a union to create an online platform to collect testimonials from the public and quickly make them available to the public and the media. By presenting a content analysis of testimonials submitted by nurses and LPNs, this article aims, on one hand, to identify the issues raised and, on the other, to examine the role and usefulness of this kind of platform for nurses who engage in acts of whistleblowing.
Instagram as a Tool to Counter the Image of Countries as Unsafe: the Case of #LiveLoveLebanon
The emergence of social media has created new means of intercultural engagement. On Instagram, there is a growing trend of travel pages and travel bloggers whose aim is to introduce and share the highlights of the destinations they travel to. Locals in these destinations also wish to portray their country positively and promote it as a tourist destination, particularly in certain countries of the Middle East where there is the added challenge of an ‘unsafe’ image to combat. This research focuses on Lebanon to find out to what extent Instagram can be considered a means to this end, and if users who come across depictions of Lebanon on Instagram perceive the country as a potential tourist destination. The study draws on Said’s conception of the ‘other’ (1978), Hall’s system of representations (1980) and Pieterse’s hybridization paradigm (1996), and it used a mixed methods approach combining surveys and semi-structured interviews with Canadian participants. Findings broadly show that while Instagram can effectively be considered a tool to counter the ‘unsafe’ image of Lebanon, and while the country may be branded as a potential tourist destination to users who come across favorable depictions of it, algorithm restrictions limit the potential for such contents to fulfill their potential as they do not always reach users who perceive Lebanon to be an ‘unsafe’ place
Cavell and the Achievement of Selfhood
Here is a passage from the discussion of rhythm in music in Hegel’s Aesthetics that will, I suggest, help us to make sense of some important ideas in Cavell about the achievement of selfhood. This runs some risk of explicating the obscure, Cavell, by reference to the unintelligible, Hegel, but Hegel also helps us here specifically to focus on the ontology and ontogeny of selfhood
Our study context is Mozambican, which is characterized by multilingualism, where French coexists with Bantu languages in addition to Portuguese. In this context, French is learned as a foreign language but without any consideration of other languages known and used by the pupils. This reseach re-examines this practice.
Therefore, our objective is to find out the impact of other languages in the Maxixe region to learning French. The main hypothesis to examine is based on recommendations found in the latest research by plurilingualism academics. According to their work, a plurilingual approach to learning that is based on one’s knowledge of other languages helps in the learning of a new language.
To examine this hypothesis, we collected data in three classes and compared their different situations: one provided the traditional way of teaching French, the second used French and Portuguese, and the third was based on comparisons between French and the regional Bantu languages.
This contribution presents the results of a collaborative set up in Montevideo (Uruguay) by a partnership of elementary school teachers, families, mediators from museums and researchers. This network is engaged in the creation and implementation of a project anchored on an approach to plurilingualism as an asset that highlights the multi-located, experiential and moving nature of knowledge.
In this article, we focus on the multimodal data analysis of three multi-site activities conducted with a group of children aged 6 to 12 to question the possibilities of multi-sites plurilingual collaborative projects in the creation of new experiential learning spaces, at school and on the street. The analysis reveals how participating children and families engage collaboratively and invest their culture capital and plurilingual and pluri-semiotic resources in the reconstruction of their plural identities and in the pluri situated appropriation of their environment.
This article is a reflective paper by four researchers on the concept of multiliteracies, drawing on themanifesto of the New London Group (NLG, 1996). We asked four researchers in the field of language and French didactics to read or reread the founding text of the New London Group in order to discuss it around a series of questions, inspired by the issues addressed by the manifesto. This text, which is based on the model of the academic conversation. The conversation synthesizes the reflections of the four participants, which is organized around the following themes: the reception of the manifesto, its contribution, the clarification of the concept of multiliteracies, the prospects for research in teaching language and French teaching, with critical feedback on the text. It concludes with a prospective reflection on the avenues to be explored in the field of multiliteracies.
