The Ethos of Care in Manuel Puig’s El beso de la mujer araña

    Get PDF
This article focuses on corporeal experience and the material and affective practice of care in Manuel Puig’s El beso de la mujer araña. It contends that at the heart of the novel’s political project lies an ethos of care that is situated rather than transcendent, contaminated rather than pure, embodied rather than abstract, and transactional rather than disinterested. In spite of all of the ways such an ethos might seem compromised or insufficient, it succeeds in suspending social mechanisms of exclusion and models for the reader a mode of ethical engagement with the world narrated.

    Get PDF
This article undertakes a comparative study of the novels Soldados de Salamina (2001) by Javier Cercas and La sombra de Heidegger (2005) by José Pablo Feinmann, drawing on Emmanuel Levinas’s philosophical approach to face-to-face relations in his existential phenomenology. It examines how the novels portray the face of the other as a form of discourse that establishes a possible relationship between literature and philosophical ethics. The article also explores how hybridity of genre, namely, the meta-historiographic character of the narrative in Cercas and the essay within the novel in the case of Feinmann, leads to a critical engagement with the privileged principle found in Levinas’s ethics: Thou shall not kill.

Reflecting on the Self: Introspective Construction of the Feminine in Nineteenth-Century Poets Carolina Valencia and Carolina Coronado

    Get PDF
This essay explores the construction of the female creative self in nineteenth-century Spain and introduces the virtually unstudied poet Carolina Valencia (born 1860 in Valladolid) through her poem “A la margen del arroyo” (1890). It brings Valencia into dialogue with the established canon through a parallel reading of the construction of subjectivity in Carolina Coronado’s “El jilguero y la flor del agua” (1852). This reading of subjectivity interacts with various aspects of nineteenth-century Spanish femininity: the identification with nature, the dichotomy of the angel and the monster, and the language of sentimentality.

A Subject in Allegorical Clothing: The Case of ‘el maldiciente Clodio’ in Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda

    Get PDF
This article considers the relationship between allegorical personification and literary subjectivity in Miguel de Cervantes’s Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda (1617). Although previous scholarship has recognized the allegorical qualities of the character Clodio, a slanderer par excellence, these qualities have been seen as incompatible with his marked inner life. I begin by clarifying the understanding of speech vices in seventeenth-century Spain as a single vice measured by speech’s harmful effect. I then draw from philosophical and psychological studies on self-knowledge to argue that Clodio’s subjectivity is a function of his allegorical nature. His status as a personification of the speech vices gives rise to the introspection and agency that characterize him.

    No full text

Some Notes on Philosophy and Redemption: Adorno and Cavell

    Get PDF
In an earlier essay, I once drew a comparison between Theodor W. Adorno’s remark that, “philosophy, which once appeared obsolete, sustains itself because the moment for its actualization has been lost,” and Stanley Cavell’s suggestion that Ludwig Wittgenstein’s “Investigations can be seen as a philosophy of culture, one that relates itself to its time as a time in which the continuation of philosophy is at stake.” In this essay, I’d like to compare Adorno’s remark to a different but related remark of Cavell’s, namely his thought that “philosophy ends in a recovery from a terminable loss.” He pursues this thought in remarks on Emerson, noting that “philosophy begins in loss, in finding yourself at a loss, as Wittgenstein more or less says.” Many different traditions—Marxism, American transcendentalism, ordinary language philosophy, just to name a few—animate these thoughts. This is not the place to detail and tease out the ramifications and significances of each; instead, I want to take this very short essay merely to raise a different point of relation than I raised before (in a deep way, then, this essay—and especially its short length—may be seen as a sort of afterword to my earlier remarks)

    The Stigmatization of Schizophrenia

    Get PDF
The objective of the following systematic literature review was to analyze the current stigma surrounding schizophrenia in North America, its implications, as well as to suggest potential interventions. The current societal climate reveals that many individuals lack an understanding of the etiology and symptoms of schizophrenia, leading to a general negative bias towards individuals with this disease. Additionally, many misperceptions such as enhanced violent tendencies surround patients with schizophrenia, exacerbating negative bias and actions such as avoidance.  Suggestions to minimize stigma and its effects were made and include the renaming of schizophrenia, the use of virtual reality programs, the refinement of education programs, and an overall switch in how the media presents schizophrenia

Confronting Canada’s overdose crisis: what’s the deal with decriminalization?

    Get PDF
The current overdose epidemic in Canada has only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Deaths from overdose are increasing, and urgent response and action are needed to save the lives of people who use drugs. The concept of ‘decriminalizing drugs’ is not new, but discourse around it has been increasing recently, with major urban centres calling on the Canadian government to take action. This commentary discusses the meaning of decriminalization, recent progress that has been made in Canada, and its possible implications on the lives of people who use drugs
