Hearing Between the Lines: Impressions of Meaning and Jazz’s Democratic Esotericism
Music is not speech; but like speech, it makes a claim on the listeners, or implicates them, inviting them, inviting or insisting upon their response. Stanley Cavell, in his late writings on music collected in the posthumous volume Here and There, arrived at a suggestive formulation to express this peculiar fact about music. His formulation is inspired by the crossing of thoughts of Walter Benjamin and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Benjamin, in The Origin of German Tragic Drama, marks a distinction between music and speech. There he characterizes the spoke word as “afflicted by meaning,” and he posits that this fact of speech provokes a “mournfulness” that in the seventeenth century sought an outlet in music. Wittgenstein, as if to bring 1 together what Benjamin pushes apart, suggests in the Investigations that “understanding a sentence in language is much more akin to understanding a theme in music than one may think
Social determinants of health are non-medical, social and economic factors that influence health. The practice of telemedicine enables physicians to virtually connect patients with healthcare resources. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare providers have increasingly utilized telemedicine as a method to provide appropriate care to patients with chronic diseases, including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). COPD is a progressive obstructive lung disorder which is substantially impacted by social determinants of health including access to healthcare. The successful utilization of telemedicine in the care of patients with chronic diseases, including COPD, highlights its emerging importance in healthcare. However, many Canadian medical schools have yet to implement a formalized telemedicine curriculum, and most Canadian students do not feel adequately prepared for virtual healthcare delivery. Here, we outline the utilization of telemedicine in COPD management and advocate for the rapid introduction of a formalized telemedicine curriculum at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Photographing Mexico’s Ultra-Wealthy: Daniela Rossell’s Ricas y Famosas
This paper engages with the visual strategies the photographer Daniela Rossell employed in her groundbreaking book on Mexico’s ultra-wealthy: Ricas y Famosas. This essay applies photography theory in new directions to suggest explanations for the strong public backlash that this documentary narrative provoked when it was released. To that end, an analysis of the visual narrative reveals the symbols and themes within the photo essay. It also identifies a specific narrative strategy that foregrounds a strong critique of the subject matter and important considerations connected to photography’s truth claims and how the economically advantaged have been portrayed.
