Can mental health practice benefit from procedural justice theory? A critical analysis on the opportunities and pitfalls of procedural justice to address coercion and human rights issues in psychiatry

    No full text
The theory of procedural justice, derived from social psychology, is employed in numerous fields of study concerned with the quality of interactions involving individuals in positions of authority. Although this theory is increasingly cited for its potential to promote approaches aimed at mitigating the effects of psychiatric coercion and better respecting individuals\u27 rights, empirical literature provides limited insights into how procedural justice could be translated into practice. It is important, therefore, to examine the theoretical and practical implications of such an orientation. Based on a critical analysis of existing literature, this article will discuss the potential contributions and limitations of procedural justice applied in the field of mental health and psychiatric nursing. Procedural justice has limitations regarding solutions for human rights violations in psychiatry. It nonetheless allows a focus on the quality of interactions with individuals in coercive contexts, in addition to considering the social and identity-related implications of psychiatric coercion.

Effects of Preferred versus Nonpreferred Music on Bench Press Performance: A Replication and Extension Study

    No full text
Replication is a fundamental aspect of scientific research, yet few replications have been conducted within strength and conditioning. In this paper we attempt to replicate and extend previous research on the effects of preferred (PREF) vs. nonpreferred (NON-PREF) music on bench press performance and motivation using a close replication of a study by Ballmann et al. (2021). The replication sample included 28 resistance-trained men (Mage = 20.5 years, SD = 1.5), while the extension sample (n = 47) comprised resistance-trained men and women (Mage = 20.6 years, SD = 1.5). Participants listened to PREF and NON-PREF music in a repeated-measures counterbalanced design, while completing bench press repetitions to failure (RTF). Concerning the replication attempt, we found no difference between music conditions for RTF (p = 0.545, Cohen’s dz = 0.12), and the replication and original effect sizes were incompatible (z = -1.88, p = 0.036). For motivation there was no difference between music conditions (p = 0.084, dz = 0.34) and the effect size estimate was incompatible with the original (z = -4.44, p < 0.001). Thus, the original study findings were not replicated. In the extension study, a two-way ANOVA showed no interaction or main effects of sex and music genre on RTF (p > 0.05). There were, however, main effects of sex (p = 0.015) and genre (p = 0.025) on motivation. In addition, attentional focus was different (more dissociative) for PREF vs. NON-PREF music (z = -3.11, p = 0.002), but perceived exertion did not differ between music conditions (p = 1.00, dz = 0.00). Results indicate that music preference does not have a robust effect on bench press performance and associated psychological factors. Athletes, exercisers, and practitioners are encouraged to utilize music that complements the task rather than considering genre preference

La Chine fantasmée au XXIème siècle. Le cas des maîtres de taiji quan

The practice of taiji quan in one of its martial aspects, the pushing of the hands (tuishou in Chinese), relatively uncommon in Europe, is very often the pretext for the dissemination of emphatic discourses that are part of Chinese soft power. In this article, we\u27ll be showing how taiji quan\u27s rural origins diverged sharply from its 19th-century recovery by Chinese scholars. Even then, theoretical discourses took precedence over practice, defining an imaginary master shaped by the context of the existential crisis that China underwent in the 19th and 20th centuries. When taiji quan spread to the West from the 1960s onwards, these fantastical discourses were taken up by the small world of sinologists. We observe with interest the different research cultures between the rather pragmatic Anglo-Saxon world and the infatuation of some French-speaking intellectuals with the theorization of the field, in particular its highly controversial association with Taoism, shamanism or internal alchemy. In the final section, we\u27ll try to show that the general public of practitioners acts as a sounding board for these fantasized discourses, to the point of ignoring the martial origins of taiji quan to make it a discipline essentially associated with well-being and spiritual fulfillment. Whatever these terms may mean on an individual level, we are witnessing the emergence of a religious-type discourse based on a culturally hybrid representation of the body. The Chinese master has become its epitome.

Korea has long been described as a “hermit kingdom” by Western societies. This perception was maintained until the turn of the 20th century. A number of political transformations challenged Korea\u27s policy of isolation. This isolation helped to awaken a certain curiosity about Korea among Europeans. Through missionaries, scientific expeditions, trade missions, geographical missions and literature, France contributed greatly to the Western world\u27s knowledge of Korea, and by extension, to the production of representations and a discourse on Korean society and culture. When formal diplomatic relations were established between France and Korea in 1876, the France of the Third Republic was also a France that was expanding into new colonial spaces. This article reflects on the margins of France, and in particular on colonial space as a space for the production of an idea of the Orient. As such, this article takes a look at French Indochina and its position - as a colonial space, a marginal space of France - but also as a foreground space and as such a space of translation and production of a specific imaginary of the Orient. In short, this article aims to highlight the contribution of French Indochina to the constitution of the cultural imaginary of Korea for France and the French-speaking world. &nbsp

Hotel Heterotopia: The Locus of Crisis in El hombre solo and Esos cielos by Bernardo Atxaga

    Get PDF
In this article, I expand upon Olaziregi’s foundational investigation of heterotopias in El hombre solo (1994) in order to further elaborate on the function of the hotel site in both this and Atxaga’s subsequent 1995 novel, Esos cielos. Through a comparative analysis of these novels – both foundational texts in the development of new narrative of the Basque conflict in the nineteen-nineties – I argue that the hotel functions as a heterotopia of crisis, and that the protagonists’ presence there catalyzes the fundamental dilemma of contemporary Basque identity lying at the heart of both novels.

The Dynamics of Triangulation in Cervantes’s El amante liberal

This essay analyzes Miguel de Cervantes’s El amante liberal as a type of psychomachia that dramatizes the battle between two systems of interpersonal triangulation that change and mold the conduct and character of the protagonist Ricardo, and to a degree, of the other protagonist Leonisa. René Girard’s mimetic desire, which degrades and dehumanizes individuals, and St. Thomas Aquinas’s Christian friendship, which foments love and generosity, are inscribed in the story to explore the theme of identity and offer a Cervantine paradigm of reading and interpretation. This paradigm allows for ambiguity, hybridity, and changing interpretations.
