Get PDFThere is no doubt that Ludwig Wittgenstein hated the music of Gustav Mahler. One cannot avoid his abusive remarks on the composer, as he says that “obviously it took a string of very rare talents to produce this bad music” and ponders caustically whether Mahler should have burnt his symphonies or else should have done himself violence so he would not write them at all. Yet one ought not to dismiss Mahler too easily as merely another symptom, alien and uncongenial in Wittgenstein’s eyes, of cultural decline, of the disintegration of the resemblances which unify a culture’s way of life. Wittgenstein may have disliked Mahler’s music, but disliking may still leave open the question about, and the need to come to terms with, one’s urge to misunderstand, something that Stanley Cavell repeatedly flagged as a site for philosophy

Though the vast majority of them have seen the light of day before, they were, as Cavell saw it, “worth rescuing either from oblivion or from the evanescence or specialization of their original locations of publication.” One obvious exception to this rule is the chapter that forms the main focus of this paper: “The World as Things: Collecting Thoughts on Collecting.” This appeared, in a slightly different version and without its subtitle, as the final chapter of Philosophy the Day After Tomorrow (2005), where it was in turn anthologized as a somewhat expanded version of an essay Cavell originally wrote for an exhibition catalogue some years previously, in 1998

En este estudio se analizará cómo difiere el tratamiento de la monarquía en ambos dramas y cómo se refleja en la música del maestro compositor Ramón Carnicer.En 1837, deux drames mettant en vedette les derniers rois de la dynastie des Habsbourg en Espagne, Felipe IV et Carlos II, ont été créés au Teatro Príncipe de Madrid : La corte del Buen Retiro de Patricio de la Escosura et Carlos II, el Hechizado d\u27Antonio Gil y Zárate. Get PDFEste artículo analiza la figura del consejero regio en el Libro de los estados de don Juan Manuel. A partir de las investigaciones de Fernando Gómez Redondo y Leonardo Funes, se propone que este personaje literario es el transmisor de la ideología del autor, la clerecía señorial. Para ello se estudia el contexto político de la obra, su relación con la literatura consiliar producida en Castilla en los siglos XIII y XIV y los principios orientadores del comportamiento transmitidos por el consejero – buen seso, entendimiento y letradura. Se concluye estableciendo que la figura y su mensaje didáctico constituyen una apelación directa a Alfonso XI en un intento de instituir un nuevo ordenamiento cortesano monárquico-nobiliario que restaure los poderes de la alta aristocracia.Cette étude analyse la figure du conseiller royal dans le Libro de los estados de don Juan Manuel. Sur la base des recherches de Fernando Gómez Redondo et de Leonardo Funes, nous proposons que ce personnage littéraire est pour l’auteur un moyen de véhiculer son idéologie, la clergie seigneuriale. Pour cela, cet article examine le contexte politique de l’œuvre, sa relation avec la littérature de conseil produite en Castille aux XIIIe et XIVe siècles, et les principes qui guident le comportement transmis par le conseiller – le bon sens, l’entendement et la lettreüre. Pour conclure, nous avançons que la figure du conseiller et son message didactique constituent un appel direct à Alphonse XI à instituer à la cour un nouvel ordre monarchique et nobiliaire qui restaurerait les pouvoirs de la haute aristocratie
Walking on the Wild Side: Indigeneity, Passion, and Nation in Guillermo Saccomanno’s La lengua del malón
Get PDFAlthough the historical novel produced in Argentina after the fall of the last dictatorship has been characterized by the principle of inclusion, the representation of Indigenous peoples in the re-imagining of national narratives has contributed, ironically, to their marginalization. This article focuses on the ways La lengua del malón (2003) by Guillermo Saccomanno engages critically with national narratives from a peripheral position in order to escape the genre’s colonial limitations and proposes narrative strategies that allow the author not only to recognize the country’s Indigenous heritage, but also to acknowledge the continuous presence of Indigeneity in contemporary Argentinean culture.Las transformaciones democráticas en Argentina después de la última dictadura militar llevaron en el campo de la novela histórica a reformulaciones del pasado nacional caracterizadas por la inclusión de grupos tradicionalmente excluidos. Sin embargo, la representación de los pueblos originarios en este género literario encontró desafíos que, irónicamente, siguen contribuyendo a la continua marginación de este grupo. El siguiente artículo analiza la exploración de la otredad en La lengua del malón (2003) de Guillermo Saccomanno, que no solamente escapa las limitaciones coloniales del género, sino que también reconoce el pasado indígena incluyéndolo en el presente del país

Get PDFThe novels An Episode in the Life of a Landscape Painter (2000) by César Aira and Rugendas (2015) by Patricia Cerda focus on the South American voyages of the German nineteenth-century painter Johann Moritz Rugendas. Inspired by Alexander von Humboldt, his drawings are characterized by a tension between a scientific urge to document the influence of the landscape’s morphology on the character of the inhabitants, and a romantic-exoticist tendency of Latin American reality. Based on Walter Mignolo’s thought, the article analyzes the coloniality of Rugendas’s pictorial work and its narrativization in both novels, by paying special attention to the tension between a colonial and Eurocentric gaze, which subordinates Latin American reality, and a humanizing and emancipating gaze, which strengthens the consciousness of a distinctive Latin American identity.Las novelas Un episodio en la vida del pintor viajero (2000) de César Aira y Rugendas (2015) de Patricia Cerda se centran en los viajes suramericanos del pintor alemán Johann Moritz Rugendas en la primera mitad del siglo XIX. Inspirados por Alexander von Humboldt, sus dibujos se caracterizan por una tensión entre una aspiración científica de registrar la influencia de la morfología del paisaje sobre el carácter de los habitantes y una tendencia romántico-exotizante de la realidad latinoamericana. Basándose en el pensamiento de Walter Mignolo, el artículo analiza la colonialidad de la obra pictórica de Rugendas y su narrativización en las dos novelas, prestando una atención especial a la tensión entre una mirada colonizadora y eurocéntrica, que subordina la realidad latinoamericana, y una mirada humanizadora y emancipadora, que fortalece la conciencia de la identidad latinoamericana
