    Get PDF
In Canada, French-English bilingualism has become for several people a requirement and an advantage for the job market. As a result, many Anglophone students upgrade their French skills during their university studies. Since mastery of language skills is essential to academic success, we studied the relationship to reading and writing in French and English of Anglophone students enrolled in an undergraduate university program that offers a French immersion academic experience. In addition to uncovering attitudes, conceptions, representations, emotions, and feelings related to reading and writing, this study establishes a link between linguistic insecurity and a student’s willingness to learn and choose French as a means of communication and information. The use of the relationship to reading and writing is therefore a tool for identifying linguistic insecurity a student may feel and a catalyst for inclusion and self-esteem.

This article first looks back at the seminal works of linguistic insecurity (LI), highlighting the lack of conceptualisation of the phenomena of hypocorrection. We then propose a new definition of these phenomena, as being characteristic, via a process of conscientization, of risktaking action, revealing a parrhesiastic subject. Finally, we will use Oliver’s biographical research interview (BRI) to illustrate how these phenomena of hypocorrection are taken into account. This BRI will then set the boundaries of this emancipatory (self) empowerment, through the implementation of a parrhesiastic pact, and an LI, that we have deemed critical.

After the hangover of over forty years of Franco’s dictatorship, Iván Zulueta breaks into Spanish cinematographic scene with a film as avantgarde as it is unclassifiable: Rapture (1979). It is a breakthrough film not only in the subjects it deals with (drugs, sex, and a renewed vampiric tradition), but also in the brave concession to sound and visual experimentation taken from New York and Barcelona’s underground cinema of the 60s and 70s. But Rapture was, above all, an autobiographical, self-referential, and visionary film. Zulueta and Rapture converge and intermingle in the same unequivocal fantasy tale. This paper clarifies the interpretive keys of this Siamese relationship between the author and his only testamentary work, bringing new insights into one of the most unique films in Spain’s film catalog.

    Get PDF
Distancia de rescate (2014) by the Argentine writer Samanta Schweblin, the novella at the core of this analysis, is a paradigmatic example in which several representative aspects of contemporary maternity discourses converge. In this article, I examine how the ambivalent mother-child bond is built and problematized in the context of the Argentine countryside in the twenty-first century. Moreover, and from a pathological perspective, I analyze the obsessive maternal behavior in the toxic space that Distancia de rescate depicts, both literally and metaphorically. I interpret the ambivalence and obsession of the mother-child relationship and its normalization in contemporary literary discourse.

Mapping the Memory of Armed Conflict through Cancer in Gabriela Ybarra’s El comensal and Héctor Abad Faciolince’s El olvido que seremos

    Get PDF
This study examines how Spanish author Gabriela Ybarra and Colombian Héctor Abad Faciolince tackle the parallel deaths of family members due to cancer and to the violence of armed conflict in their autobiographical novels El comensal (Spain, 2015) and El olvido que seremos (Colombia, 2006), respectively. Looking beyond the trope of cancer as metaphor, Ybarra and Abad Faciolince employ medical language to articulate the intergenerational mysteries surrounding instances of untimely death within their families. Cancer, thus, moves beyond a metaphor for violence and destruction, becoming a mode of representation for studying and articulating the unknown.
