Linguistic insecurity is often defined by a lack of confidence in one’s linguistic abilities, which is grounded in the idea that there is a superior, more authentic standard against which one’s own language variety should be measured. In French second language (FSL) education in Canada, this perception of an idealized standard often leaves teachers and teacher candidates questioning their sense of belonging in the teaching profession, especially those who speak French as an additional language themselves. This insecurity can be attributed to a persisting orientation to the European standard of French and teachers’ orientation to the idealized standard of the native speaker.
Breaking Motherhood’s Rules: Play and Reproduction in Gabriela Wiener’s Nueve lunas (2009)
This article analyses Nine Moons (2009), by the Peruvian writer Gabriela Wiener, in relation to the concept of play in the creation of the novel, the development of the protagonist as a mother, as well as the dismantling of normative notions of motherhood. Although motherhood as a patriarchal institution is, according to Adrienne Rich, full of norms that oppress women, whether they are mothers or not, it can also be a site of (possible) resistance. I argue how through play Nine Moons separates motherhood from natural processes and exposes its constructed quality, restoring independence and autonomy to the process of gestation.
Rafael F. Muñoz published during the heyday of the literature of the Mexican Revolution and the generation of the “macho” as national representative. This article analyzes a selection of short stories where masculinity in combat is read as national ideal and political equalizer, using spectacle and gesture as key concepts. The article likewise analyzes two exceptional short stories of non-fighting men who fail to fulfill the expectations of virility. Here, Muñoz presents the risks of a masculinity composed of superficial gestures, using the stripping of virile attributes to reveal the vulnerability of victims and the cost of civil violence.
Affect and Emotions in Two Chilean Postmemory Narratives: La dimensión desconocida by Nona Fernández and La resta by Alia Trabucco Zerán
La dimensión desconocida (2016) by Nona Fernández and La resta (2014) by Alia Trabucco Zerán are recent novels about the memory of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990) in Chile that use emotions to reconstruct a historical era through memory. The two novels share an emphasis on the affect and emotions of both readers and characters. While La dimensión desconocida is a historical novel that invites the reader to identify and empathize with the protagonists, La resta is an allegorical novel that provokes the reader to think about history by startling him or her through the narration of the protagonists\u27 violent games.

Are Single Limb Hopping Scores the Same When Performed in a Physical Education Class Versus a Laboratory Setting in Uninjured Adolescents? Implications for Future Rehabilitation Guidelines for Adolescents With Knee Injuries
This study compared the performance of adolescents (11-13 years old) in two environments with five single-limb hopping tasks. The purpose was to assess the reproducibility and responsiveness of single-limb hop tests in two environments (gymnasium and laboratory) for uninjured adolescents, and determine whether there are differences in baseline measures between males and females. Thirty-four participants (12 ± 0.3 years) were randomly assigned the gymnasium during a regularly scheduled physical education class or the laboratory and completed five single-limb hop tasks. Two weeks later, participants completed the tasks in the other location. The performances were evaluated for reproducibility (intra-class correlation coefficients [ICC], and standard errors of measurement [SEM]), and responsiveness (Bland-Altman analyses [BA], and smallest real difference [SRD]). Limb symmetry indices (LSI) were also calculated for each task. Two-way mixed ANOVAs examined location and sex differences. All hops were reproducible (ICC = 0.62-0.88) with SEMs ranging between 6.7-13.0% of the mean of the group. BA showed location differences for the triple hop on the dominant limb (d = -13.3 cm, p=0.03). SRDs ranged between 18.5-35.9% of the mean of the group for all hops. Males scored higher (percent difference (%D) = 9.9-21.4%, p<0.05) for all hops except the anterior hop on both limbs, the 6-meter timed hop and lateral hop on the non-dominant limb. LSIs were 93.5-102.6% and 94.4-101.7% for all hopping task for females and males, respectively. In conclusion, this battery of single-limb hop tests offer a reliable method for clinicians and researchers to assess the functional capacity of uninjured adolescents in various environments
Cavell and the Magic of Cinema
The World Viewed is a fascinating, dense and enigmatic book by Stanley Cavell on the ontology of cinema, understood as a fact of experience that leads us back to our fundamental existential dimension as individuals displaced before the world that passes before our eyes. The world viewed on the big screen in the dark movie theater is our world, but we are not in it, we are present to it by looking at it from the outside, we own it in this mythological way. This is the magic of film, according to Cavell: “How do movies reproduce the world magically? Not by literally presenting us with the world, but by permitting us to view it unseen.” A magic that repays us for our loneliness and sadness by making them stand out against the background of the world seen on the screen, fabulous and mythical: “movies also promise us happiness exactly not because we are rich or beautiful or perfectly expressive, but because we can tolerate individuality, separateness, and inexpressiveness. In particular, because we can maintain a connection with reality despite our condemnation to viewing it in private.
