    Get PDF
The increasing importance of literature as a signifier of national identity transformed how maps were valued during the Enlightenment. The first part of this essay examines how this cartographic component was visualized in the engravings and maps included in various editions of Don Quijote published in the eighteenth century and in previous centuries, as curiously the work had not been illustrated with maps until the 1780 edition. Then, we will trace the emergence of national identity and values, such as masculine authority, in this canonical work of literature through its cartographic component. The subject grows even more complex once the assignment of identity is performed by foreign hands.

Intersubjective Perspectives on Intersexuality and Spectator Identification in Puenzo’s XXY

    No full text
Intersexuality is underrepresented in film, yet in key sequences in XXY, perspectival patterns kindle attentiveness to intersex subjectivity by focalizing the experiences of a secondary, non-intersex identified character. What is gained by rendering intersexuality from the vantage point of one who has yet to experience it? This article argues that the film’s visual and aural grammar queers intersexuality itself, undoing dichotomic borders between “intersex” and “non-intersex” by making intersexuality a relational rather than purely anatomical quality. This intersubjective rendering of intersexuality facilitates alternative pathways for audience identification with intersexuality, a topic yet unexplored in the film’s robust body of criticism.

Rays of Change: Commentary on Potential Interventions for Skin Cancer Prevention in Ontario Medical Education

    No full text
This commentary addresses the rising incidence of skin cancer in Ontario and the exclusion of Skin of Colour (SOC) populations from sun-protection advocacy. It proposes the installation of sunscreen dispensers in medical schools to promote sun safety habits and awareness among future healthcare providers. The initiative aims to reduce skin cancer rates by normalizing sunscreen use across all skin types, with educational infographics emphasizing SOC needs. Despite potential barriers such as cost and community resistance, the involvement of healthcare professionals and students could drive long-term change in sun-protective behaviors and improve population health outcomes.

    Get PDF
Abstract Introduction. University can be stressful for students affecting mental health, academics, and well-being. Common stressors include workload, relationships, and finances. Video games are a method of coping. Methods. Twelve studies met inclusion criteria found in a search of six databases. Studies involving: participants with comorbidities, the negative effects of video games, publishing before 2010, and only assessments of thefrequency/duration of playtime were excluded. The quality was assessed using a self-developed quality appraisal. Results. Video games may reduce stress in students, although the effect is not conclusive. Video games can provide a sense of control and mastery leading to increased relaxation and reduced stress levels. They can be a distraction from stressors and improve mood. Discussion. Gaming helps reduce stress in students but more research is needed to fully understand the effects. Most studies did not look at the effects of playing video games in isolation. Individual differences may impact the effectiveness of stress management. Using varying strategies to cope including professional help is important. Conclusion. Further research should identify the most effective types of video games and develop best practices for stress management. Understanding potential benefits and limitations of video gaming can inform effective stress reduction strategies

This paper analyzes the poem "Paraguachoa" written in 1999 by León Febres-Cordero and recovered and edited in 2020, within the Orphic context. At the same time that the oeuvre of this author is reviewed, in line with this topic, I reflect not only on the keywords and rituals of Orphism, but also on the mysterious basis that regulates both Greek tragedy – the basis of the author’s writing – and the Bacchic and Orphic sects.

Imperios, conexiones y resistencias

The loss of the supposed monopoly of professional historians over the past and the predominant presentist conception of history have given an unusual vitality to a discipline which, far from being in crisis, obliges us to multiply efforts to transfer the results of our research to the rest of society. From the perspective of early modern history, the article raises some considerations on the convenience of approaching the study of imperial structures from an angle capable of combining global dynamics with the determining weight of the local sphere, the importance of analyzing the vertebral role played by all kinds of connectors and overlapping networks, and the memory of the multiple manifestations of resistance and hybridization.

    Get PDF
Taking the cross as a fictional structural device, this article reads Cervantes’s text from an anthropological perspective that questions violence against female bodies. Leocadia, as a paradigm of the Virgin Mary, takes the cross as payment for Rodolfo’s rape, putting her in the position of a prostitute. For Bataille, prostitutes had sacred characteristics because they were permanently transgressing limits. Through repetitive fainting and the theft of the crucifix, Leocadia experiences a queer temporality that grants her access to the sacred. Leocadia’s scientifically impossible pregnancy frames this text as a miracle narrative that questions the use of the crucifix to justify rape.
