Southern Cone Memory Discourse and Cuba’s Generación de los Hijos in Camila Guzmán Urzúa’s El telón de azúcar (2006)
Full text linkThe present article analyzes the documentary Telón de azúcar (2006) by Cuban filmmaker Camila Guzmán Urzúa (1971) and the cinematic dialogue she sustains with the work of her father, Chilean documentarian Patricio Guzmán. Although the documentary primarily deals with Cuba and the impact of the Special Period on the filmmaker’s generation, the article proposes that Guzmán Urzúa, upon borrowing audiovisual discourses and techniques from her father’s post-dictatorship cinematography, develops a searing critique of the revolutionary dream of her parents’ generation, even as she maintains her faith in socialist futures.El presente artículo analiza el documental El telón de azúcar (2006) de la cineasta cubana Camila Guzmán Urzúa (1971) y el diálogo cinematográfico que esta entabla con la obra de su padre, el documentalista chileno Patricio Guzmán. Aunque el documental principalmente se centra en Cuba y el impacto que ha tenido el Período Especial en la generación de la cineasta, el artículo propone que al prestar discursos y técnicas audiovisuales de la cinematografía posdictadura de su padre, Guzmán Urzúa desarrolla una fuerte crítica de la generación revolucionaria de sus padres al mismo tiempo que mantiene su fe en un futuro socialista
Transatlantic Body Politics of the Spanish Civil War: Decoloniality and the Poetics of Internationalism
No full textThis article explores the poetics of internationalism in the Spanish Civil War, focusing on representations of the body in Spanish-language poetry. I contrast prevailing tropes of the body as an abstract figure for internationalism with the representation, in poems by Nicolás Guillén and Enrique Gil Gilbert, of specific bodies that nuance internationalism. These poems foreground the bodies of Black and Indigenous lyric subjects who summon antifascist Spain via their embodiment. They offer a “body politics,” which I define as the advancement of political theory through representation of a speaker’s geopolitically situated and embodied self, that heralds expressions of antifascism and international solidarity today.Este artículo explora la poética del internacionalismo de la guerra civil española, centrándose en las representaciones del cuerpo en poesía escrita en español. Contrasto los tropos predominantes del cuerpo como figura abstracta del internacionalismo con la representación, en los poemas de Nicolás Guillén y Enrique Gil Gilbert, de cuerpos específicos que matizan el internacionalismo. Estos poemas destacan los cuerpos de sujetos líricos negros e indígenas que invocan a la España antifascista vía su corporeidad. Ofrecen una “política del cuerpo” – definida como la propuesta de teoría política por medio de la autorepresentación geopolíticamente localizada y corpórea – que es precursora de expresiones actuales del antifascismo y solidaridad internacionales

No full textThis article studies the literary representation of the Black body in the context of multiculturalism, taking as an example the novel El fin del Océano Pacífico [The End of the Pacific Ocean] (2020) by Colombian author Tomás González. It examines how the status of the human in the African diaspora takes on an ambiguous appeal as seen through the lens of plasticity (Zakiyyah Iman Jackson). In this way, the article argues that racialization corroborates a procedure that makes Black characters legible according to whether or not they bond with a social function trapped in servility.Este artículo estudia la representación literaria del cuerpo negro en el contexto del multiculturalismo tomando como ejemplo la novela El fin del Océano Pacífico (2020) del colombiano Tomás González. Allí se propone examinar las formas en que el estatuto de lo humano en la diáspora africana adquiere un carácter ambiguo según se observa bajo el lente de la plasticidad (Zakiyyah Iman Jackson). De esta forma, el artículo sostiene que la racialización corrobora un procedimiento que hace legible a personajes negros según comulguen o no con una función social usualmente atrapada en el servilismo

No full textSince the beginning of the 21st century, there has been an ongoing decline in children’s physicals, delayed immunizations, and well visits. This study investigates sociodemographic factors including poverty levels (PDL), employment status, adequacy of insurance, and race on the accessibility of preventative care check ups. The research from this study has been derived from the 2022 National Survey of Children\u27s Health survey that sampled 53,621 participants from diverse socioeconomic and racial backgrounds. This study uses Binary regression analysis and Pearson\u27s chi-squared tests to examine and test the association between key factors and access of care. For example, participants in the lowest poverty level (0-99%) experienced poorer health outcomes (27.2%) compared to those in 400%+ income level (12.4%). Furthermore, when compared to the unemployed or unpaid class of participants, the participants who work full-time are associated with better health outcomes (OR=1.219, 95% CI = 1.100, 1.352). Racial minorities, including Hispanic (OR=0.763), Black (OR=0.801), and Asian (OR=0.553) participants, showed lower odds of positive outcomes compared to participants of White descent. This research seeks to encourage the creation of targeted interventions strategies focusing on poverty reduction, stable income, and equitable, universal access to preventative measures for children across diverse populations.

Cette étude examine les facteurs sociodémographiques, incluant les niveaux de pauvreté dépendant (NPD), le statut d’emploi, l’adéquation de l’assurance et la race, qui influencent l’accessibilité aux soins préventifs. Les données de cette recherche proviennent de l’enquête du National Survey of Children\u27s Health (NSCH) de 2022, qui a interrogé 53 621 participants issus de milieux socioéconomiques et raciaux variés. Cette étude utilise une analyse de régression binaire et les tests du chi carré de Pearson pour examiner et tester l’association entre les facteurs clés et l’accès aux soins. Par exemple, les participants appartenant au niveau de pauvreté le plus bas (0-99%) ont présenté des résultats de santé moins favorables (27,2%) comparativement à ceux ayant un revenu de 400% ou plus (12,4%). De plus, en comparaison avec les participants sans emplois ou non rémunérés, les participants travaillant à temps plein sont associés à de meilleurs résultats de santé (OR=1.219, 95% CI = 1.100, 1.352). Les minorités raciales, notamment les participants hispaniques (OR = 0,763), noirs (OR = 0,801) et asiatiques (OR = 0,553), ont présenté des probabilités moindres d’avoir des résultats positifs par rapport aux participants d’origine blanche. Cette recherche vise à encourager la création de stratégies d’intervention ciblées sur la réduction de la pauvreté, la stabilité des revenus et un accès équitable et universel aux mesures préventives pour les enfants de diverses populations.

Full text linkCarceral states routinely engage in profiling of people pushed to the margins by colonialism, racism and white supremacy, capitalism and classism, patriarchy and heteronormativity, ableism, and other violent structures. This is evident in who is targeted, harmed, and killed by policing, imprisonment, immigration, child apprehension, health, social services and assistance, and other carceral institutions. The Journal of Prisoners on Prisons invites contributions by current and former prisoners, their loved ones, and grassroots community organizations that document, critique, and propose alternatives to profiling evident in carceral practices and experiences. Prospective contributors can also submit pieces examining resistance efforts behind and beyond bars to build decarceral futures

No full textThe summer of 2021 was the beginning of my experience as a researcher from Emily Carr University of Art & Design on a project that connected me with other researchers across Canada. The project was titled Research in Residence: Arts’ Civic Impact, and was an initiative in collaboration with Mass Culture, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Culture Statistics Working Group, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and the Toronto Arts Foundation. Each researcher had their own area of interest, with my focus being on researching and exploring the innovative ways of reframing research methods and connecting with communities in the arts sector and academic institutions to align with methods derived from an Indigenous way of gathering information.L\u27été 2021 a marqué le début de mon expérience en tant que chercheur de l\u27Emily Carr University of Art & Design sur un projet qui m\u27a connecté avec d\u27autres chercheurs à travers le Canada. Le projet, intitulé Recherche en Résidence : Impact Civique des Arts, était une initiative en collaboration avec Mass Culture, le Conseil des arts du Canada, le Groupe de travail sur les statistiques culturelles, la Fondation Trillium de l\u27Ontario et la Fondation des arts de Toronto.
