Aux marges de l'empire, anatomie de la création en 1924 d'un parc national dans les îles australes françaises
No full textInternational audienceExploitées dès la fin du XVIIIe siècle par des chasseurs phoquiers et baleiniers venus de toushorizons en quête de fourrures et de graisse, les îles australes ne font que tardivement l’objet d’une (ré)affirmation de la souveraineté française : Saint-Paul et Amsterdam en 1892, Kerguelen en 1893, Crozet plus tard encore. Le caractère singulier de ces territoires pour une étude des mesures environnementales mises en œuvre par les autorités coloniales réside dans leur caractère isolé, éloigné du continent mais surtout dénué de sociétés autochtones. Situées aux marges de l’empire, entre 38° et 49° de latitude sud, ces îles inhabitées n’échappent cependant pas à l’essor de la chasse baleinière dite moderne et à la mise sous concession de la nature. Une usine baleinière est d’ailleurs construite par une société norvégienne à Kerguelen en 1908. Dans ce contexte, à partir de 1916, l’incurie de la France face aux « massacres » d’éléphants de mer perpétrés sur son territoire attire l’attention d’associations naturalistes françaises mais aussi étrangères. Sous leur pression, mais aussi face à la logique de destruction des « richesses nationales », la France avance l’arme du droit.Le décret adopté par le ministère des Colonies le 30 décembre 1924 crée un parc national dans ces îles australes. Concrètement, des zones de refuge sont définies pour certaines espèces de mammifères marins et grands oiseaux de mer. En dehors de ces zones, la chasse est autorisée à condition d’utiliser industriellement l’entièreté du corps des animaux tués. Cette décision interroge. Pourquoi prendre le risque de créer un parc national avec des zones de refuge que la France, faute de moyens suffisants, faute de présence sur place, risque de ne pas être en mesure de faire appliquer ? Pour le comprendre, nous analysons les origines du décret et sa difficile mise en œuvre à partir des archives ministérielles conservées au Centre des archives diplomatiques de la Courneuve, aux Archives Nationales d’Outre-mer d’Aix-en-Provence et à partir des archives du Laboratoire des pêches et productions coloniales conservées aux Archives du Muséum d’Histoire naturelle de Paris. Leur étude permet d’identifier les lanceurs d’alerte et leurs relais auprès des autorités françaises, les modèles étrangers de réglementation de la chasse sur lesquels ils s’appuient pour souligner le retard de la France mais aussi le rôle clé joué par certains fonctionnaires comme Abel Gruvel qui fait le lien entre le ministère des Colonies, les associations naturalistes et les concessionnaires qui, eux, cherchent à faire assouplir la réglementation à venir. Nous proposons donc de retracer la genèse d’une stratégie qui, entre impératifs environnementaux et impératifs souverainistes, n’est pas sans rappeler celle suivie par la France aujourd’hui avec la création d’un réseau d’aires marines protégées
Quantitative characterization of the ribbons and elastic vortices in viscoelastic Taylor-Couette flow with Boger fluids
No full textInternational audienceInstabilities modes in viscoelastic Taylor-Couette flow are investigated using space-time diagrams and particle image velocimetry (PIV) of flow patterns in the meridional cross-section. The working solution is an aqueous mixture of the polymer solution of Polyethylene oxide (PEO) and Polyethylene glycol (PEG). The concentrations of the PEG and the POE are chosen in such a way to obtain solutions with constant shear viscosities (characteristic of Boger fluids) and a wide spectrum of values of the molecular elastic number in a single Taylor-Couette system. The interplay between the elasticity of the polymer solution and the inertia forces induced by the rotation of the cylinders leads to different critical modes: stationary Taylor vortices for very small values of the elasticity, ribbons i.e. superposition of spirals of opposite helicity for intermediate values of the elasticity and elastic vortices for large values of the elasticity and weak inertia forces. The elasto-rotational Rayleigh discriminant and linear stability analysis show the role of elasticity in the destabilization of the base flow and on the threshold of critical modes. The elastic vortices are characterized by regions of strong inflows separated by outflows; they form flame patterns in the spatiotemporal diagrams. The amplitude of the radial velocity at the centre of vortices is used as the order parameter of the ribbons dynamics. The Ginzburg-Landau theory offers a framework to describe the destabilization of regular ribbons with the introduction of a dissymmetry parameter. Spatiotemporal properties of elastic vortices (such as the drift velocity, the fraction, the size and the lifetime of inflows) are measured for different values of the criticality. The scaling exponents of energy spectra for inertio-elastic turbulence are determined for viscoelastic Taylor-Couette flow with the inner or outer sole rotating cylinder; the obtained values are compared with those from other experiments and from numerical simulations. PIV measurements have allowed to determine the power of the radial force at the inflow which shows that the driving mechanism of the elastic instability is active from the outer cylinder toward the inner cylinder
Softening effect on thick-walled tube inflation and bulging instability
No full textInternational audienceInflatable tubes often consist of rubber-like materials that exhibit stress softening over cyclic loading, referred to as the Mullins effect in the literature. A theoretical model is proposed to study the stress softening effect on the inflation of a thick-walled hyperelastic tube and the onset of an axisymmetric bulging. The three studied pre-loads (tension, torsion, inflation) create different softening distributions along the tube wall thickness. The resulting predicted bulging instability onset fluctuates, exhibiting a memory-like effect of the load type and intensity. A finite element analysis validates the theoretical analysis and evaluates the consequence of pre-softening loads on the post-bifurcation evolution. The theoretical analysis provides new elements for the design, control, and failure prevention of elastomer tube elements under inflation

Enhanced Performance of Poly(lactic acid)/Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) Blends with Metal–Organic Framework (MOF-2) and Epoxy Functionalized Graphene (EFG): A Comprehensive Study of Morphology, Rheological, Thermal, Mechanical, and Barrier Properties
No full textInternational audienceThis study investigates the impact of metal-organic framework (MOF-2) nanofillers and epoxy functionalized graphene (EFG) on poly(lactic acid)/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) blends. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses revealed strong interfacial compatibility and efficient dispersion of the nanofillers, leading to a co-continuous morphology. Rheological measurements showed improved interfacial adhesion and molecular chain entanglement, resulting in a more robust polymer network and a more homogeneous microstructure. Tensile tests revealed significant improvements in mechanical properties, while density measurements showed no significant change, highlighting the compatibility of MOF-2/EFG with the PLA/PBAT blend. Thermal analyses indicated an increase in cold crystallization temperature, suggesting enhanced stability and crystallization of the polymer matrix. Water vapor permeability (WVP) tests showed a substantial reduction in permeability, indicating enhanced barrier properties. Finally, contact angle measurements revealed improved wettability and surface properties due to the hydrophilic nature of MOF-2 and EFG. These results confirm that MOF-2/EFG significantly enhances the morphological, rheological, mechanical, thermal, barrier, and surface properties of PLA/PBAT nanocomposites, making them ideal for applications like packagin
Photostimulus-responsive Non-covalent Interactions in Polymers: A Review
No full textInternational audienceThis study reviews light-responsive polymers in various applications, including drug delivery, information storage, sensor, self-healing material, antibacterial or anti-fouling, and environmental applications. Light-responsive polymers are a new material type being developed for various medical, electronics, engineering, and environmental applications. The working principle of light-responsive materials is based on metal-ligand interactions or non-covalent interactions between polymer functional groups, metal ions, and other filler functional groups. Light irradiation causes physical and mechanical changes in drug delivery and antibacterial systems, which results in the materials releasing more drugs or antibacterial substances. When materials in information storage devices and sensors are exposed to light, they can change color or glow. This has been applied for data storage to reveal QR codes under UV light. Additionally, this review discusses the thermodynamic aspects and computer modeling of light-responsive materials to emphasize the importance and development of these materials. Finally, light-responsive polymer development for various applications is presented

A critical review of the state of knowledge on factors responsible for the degradation in soils of polyhydroxyalkanoates
No full textInternational audiencePlastic pollution in the environment, particularly in soils, has become a major ecological concern due to its persistence and potential risks to ecosystems and human health. To mitigate this issue, biodegradable polymers have been developed as sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics. Among them, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) stand out due to their promising biodegradability under diverse environmental conditions. However, their degradation is governed by a complex interplay of intrinsic factors (e.g., chemical structure, crystallinity, molar mass and polydispersity, physical state …) and extrinsic factors (e.g., temperature, humidity, oxygen, microorganisms …), which remain only partially understood. Despite significant research efforts, the methodologies used to assess PHA degradation are often inconsistent or suboptimal, limiting the comparability and reliability of results. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of these factors on PHA degradation in soils and suggests innovative experimental approaches to further the studies of these degradation processes
“We Will soon Be parliment men all of us”: éducation et politisation dans les quartiers populaires de Dublin, 1794-1796
No full textInternational audienceIn March 1796, Patrick Kennedy, aged 16, wrote a series of pathetic letters to alderman James Bridge while he was in the New Gaol in Dublin waiting for his execution for high treason. This serialised confession opens an exceptional window into the popular underworld of the secret society of the Defenders, and how their fusion with the United Irishmen operated from 1794 in Dublin to form a mass-based revolutionary organisation. It took place in reading clubs or societies with names like the Telegraph (or Telegraphic) Club, the Philanthropic Society, or the Athenian Society. These three clubs were all founded by John Daly Burk, after his expulsion from Trinity College, Dublin, for blasphemy, for the purpose of connecting with the workers’ combinations in the Irish capital (which were forbidden since 1780) to broaden the base of the United Irishmen after their official interdiction and disbanding in April 1794. Reconstructing the activities and the meetings of these clubs (often in public houses and taverns) is difficult for the historian, but the careful study of the published trials of the Defenders, of their testimonies and of the recollection of Burk enables to understand how education through the reading of books and pamphlets went alongside revolutionary politicisation in the workers’ neighbourhoods of Stoneybatter, Smithfield, and the Liberties, bringing them into a new regime of historicity.En mars 1796, Patrick Kennedy, 16 ans, écrit une série de lettres pathétiques à l’échevin James Bridge depuis sa cellule de la New Gaol à Dublin où il attend son exécution pour haute trahison. Reconstituer les activités et les réunions de ces clubs (qui avaient souvent lieu dans des pubs ou des tavernes) est une tâche complexe, mais en croisant les lettres de Kennedy avec les comptes-rendus des procès des Defenders, avec leurs témoignages et avec les mémoires de Burk, il est possible de mieux comprendre comment l’éducation, à travers la lecture de livres et de pamphlets, était au cœur de la politisation révolutionnaire des quartiers ouvriers de Stoneybatter, Smithfield et des Liberties, les faisant entrer dans un nouveau régime d’historicité
