Study on the photoinitiation mechanism of carbazole-based oxime esters (OXEs) as novel photoinitiators for free radical photopolymerization under near UV/visible-light irradiation exposure and the application of 3D printing
International audienceIn this work, twenty-two oxime esters bearing different functional groups and based on carbazole as the chromophore were designed and synthesized as Type I photoinitiators. Interestingly, all structures mentioned in this work have never been reported before (even for their synthesis). These oxime esters were found to have good light absorption properties in the UV–visible range, and especially at 405 nm which is a reference wavelength in photopolymerization. Noticeably, several structures showed better photoinitiation abilities than the benchmark photoinitiator i.e. diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide (TPO), evidencing the interest of these structures. In order to investigate the photoinitiation mechanism of the two series of oxime esters differing by the position of the photocleavable groups, electronic absorption spectra were determined by molecular modeling and density functional theory calculations. Photopolymerization abilities of the different oxime esters and release of CO2 during the polymerization experiments were determined by Real-Time Fourier Transformed Infrared (RT-FTIR). Active free radicals were characterized by mean of Electron Spin Resonance Spin Trapping (ESR-ST) experiments. On the basis of these different complementary experiments, chemical mechanisms occurring during photopolymerization could be proposed. Experimental results showed that the decarboxylation reaction occurring subsequent to the photocleavage of oxime esters had a beneficial effect on the photoinitiation ability. Finally, 3D printed objects were successfully obtained by using oxime esters exhibiting the best photoinitiating abilities

University of Haute-Alsace, 08-09/06/2023.)The Gide-Rouart correspondence can be divided into three political phases: firstly, youth, when each of the two letter-writers behaved above all as men of literature, even if Rouart was already more concerned than Gide with politics, the Dreyfus Affair being a turning point when the opposition in temperament between the two men became clearer; a second phase corresponding to the ascending years of Rouart’s political career, culminating in his becoming chief of staff to the minister Cruppi, and his finally having the power to help the friends that, together with Gide, he had been trying to place here and there for years; finally, maturity, which corresponds to those years when, having become an established political figure, Rouart changed his view of Gide’s works, which he read according to his concerns as a public man – this is particularly the case for Corydon, but also for the feminist trilogy of Gide, for which his marriage to Yvonne Lerolle provided, unbeknownst to him, the sad model
Jules Romains surréaliste ?

Thus, in Les Hommes de bonne volonté, the portrait of Vorge (who bears a strong resemblance to André Breton and Louis Aragon) is not flattering: his criminal promiscuity with the serial killer Quinette reveals much about his moral degradation; his lyrical meditations on Parisian shop windows make him seem like a paranoid; and his poems are strikingly incongruous. But didn’t Romains himself know Landru? How can we not note, moreover, that Vorge’s supernatural intuitions resemble those of Romains experiencing epiphanies in the midst of an ephemeral crowd? Finally, it must be said that Vorge’s poems are very good pastiches, which also pervert the poetics of the novel in which they are inserted

Construire un laboratoire de suivi de la radioactivité dans l'océan Le cas polynésien pendant les essais nucléaires dans l'atmosphère (1966-1974)
International audienceThe article explores the monitoring of radioactivity in the Pacific Ocean during nuclear tests in French Polynesia (1966–1974) as part of the CHLORE project. It examines the establishment of a surveillance system by the CEP (Pacific Experimentation Center), involving military personnel, scientists, and biologists. Protocols included monitoring aquatic environments and the food chain, but official reports often downplayed health risks, contributing to a reassuring narrative despite confirmed contamination. The research, though tightly controlled, also investigated other environmental impacts, such as the physical effects of explosions and anthropogenic transformations of lagoons. Simultaneously, it supported scientific advances in the study of tropical ecosystems, backed by the CEP’s logistical resources. However, these efforts unfolded in a context of nuclear secrecy, with limited access to archives, making a full assessment of long-term impacts challenging.L'article explore la surveillance de la radioactivité dans l'Océan Pacifique durant les essais nucléaires français en Polynésie française (1966-1974), dans le cadre du projet CHLORE. Il analyse la mise en place d'un système de suivi par le CEP (Centre d'Expérimentations du Pacifique), associant militaires, scientifiques et biologistes. Les protocoles incluaient le contrôle des milieux aquatiques et de la chaîne alimentaire, mais les rapports officiels minimisaient souvent les risques sanitaires, alimentant un discours rassurant malgré des contaminations avérées. Les recherches, bien qu'encadrées, ont permis d'étudier d'autres impacts environnementaux, tels que les effets physiques des explosions et les transformations anthropiques des lagons. Parallèlement, elles ont contribué à des avancées scientifiques sur les écosystèmes tropicaux, soutenues par les moyens logistiques du CEP. Toutefois, ces travaux s'inscrivent dans un contexte marqué par une culture du secret nucléaire et des difficultés d'accès aux archives, rendant l'évaluation complète des impacts à long terme encore complexe

Beyond the Diffusion Limit: Pre‐Associated Ion‐Pair Photoinitiating Systems for Radical Photopolymerization
International audienceAbstract The pre‐association mechanism of an ion‐pair Type II photoinitiating system (PIS) acting in the visible range was studied. The choice of a dye as photoinitiator (crystal violet) with an excited state lifetime of 200 ps ensured the absence of dynamical quenching by the borate salts used as coinitiator. In spite of the fact that no diffusional bimolecular quenching can take place, excellent polymerization efficiency was found, underlining the high reactivity of the PIS. A saturation effect is observed when increasing the concentration of borate as a consequence of the pre‐association mechanism arising from coulombic interaction between the cationic dye and the anionic coinitiator. The association equilibria of the system were described and the corresponding association constant values were calculated, allowing to quantify the pre‐association efficiency. This was further successfully correlated to the observed maximal rates of polymerization. The efficiency of this super‐stoichiometric sample with an excess of borate was finally compared to the stoichiometric 1 : 1 dye:borate ion‐pair. It is shown that the pre‐association mechanism could lead to much higher efficiency than the stoichiometric ion‐pair
