Robust Neural Architecture Search Using Differential Evolution for Medical Images
International audienceRecent studies have demonstrated that Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures are sensitive to adversarial attacks with imperceptible permutations. Adversarial attacks on medical images may cause manipulated decisions and decrease the performance of the diagnosis system. The robustness of medical systems is crucial, as it assures an improved healthcare system and assists medical professionals in making decisions. Various studies have been proposed to secure medical systems against adversarial attacks, but they have used handcrafted architectures. This study proposes an evolutionary Neural Architecture Search (NAS) approach for searching robust architectures for medical image classification. The Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm is used as a search algorithm. Furthermore, we utilize an attention-based search space consisting of five different attention layers and sixteen convolution and pooling operations. Experiments on multiple MedMNIST datasets show that the proposed approach has achieved better results than deep learning architectures and a robust NAS approach
Microscopy techniques have made considerable progress in recent years. In fluorescence imaging, so-called super-resolution microscopes have transformed research, particularly in biology, by enabling the observation of details well below the diffraction limit. Various types of label-free microscopy are presented as alternatives or complementary imaging modes to fluorescence imaging, when labeling is impossible or poses problems (phototoxicity, photobleaching, etc.). Among these modalities, phase imaging has also seen significant development in recent years, thanks to computing and numerical advances that have improved or facilitated both image acquisition and reconstruction. In this context, diffractive tomographic microscopy, which is an extension of holographic imaging, provides access to quantitative, label-free 3D imaging. This document details the experimental and theoretical/numerical work carried out at IRIMAS on these subjects, focusing on the path I have taken, and on possible developments in the short and medium term.

Simulation of a zeolite thermochemical heat storage reactor: Impact assessment of isotherm model selection
International audienceEfficient modeling of thermochemical heat storage reactors is required to predict their performance in various operating conditions and optimize their design. Such modeling necessitates an accurate description of the properties of storage materials, which is still challenging to this day. This paper specifically investigates the influence of the choice of the sorption isotherm model. To this aim, the Langmuir, Dubinin-Astakhov (DA) and modified Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) isotherm models are studied. The 1D model of an open fixed bed reactor based on the hydration and dehydration of zeolite 13X is presented. The model couples heat and mass transfer and uses the linear driving force approximation. Experimental investigations are also performed to characterize the sorption equilibrium of the material, its adsorption kinetics at the reactor scale and the resulting heat storage performance. The model is validated simultaneously on the basis of mass and of heat transfer measurements (i.e., breakthrough and temperature curves). The BET isotherm is shown to be the most relevant for the description of water adsorption on zeolite 13X because it considers multilayer adsorption. It fits the experimental isotherm best. At the reactor scale, the modified BET model also provides the best results, closely followed by the DA model. Still, for consistent predictions, the characterization of the chosen sorbent (i.e., the experimental data used to correlate the isotherm model or the heat of sorption) is of utmost importance and the initial water loading must be adequately specified
This thesis focuses on the problem of unsupervised segmentation of fluorescent microscopy images of vinewood infected with Esca. The under investigation images are characterized by the presence of a fluorescent filamentary pathogen and a textured background that exhibits autofluorescence. These images suffer from blur, a phenomenon caused by a convolution between the observed sample and the Point Spread Function (PSF) of the microscope. This blur occurs mainly in areas where the pathogen is not situated on the focal plane. We present a joint segmentation deconvolution method based on the triplet Markov random field model. This method allows for taking into account a varying blur during segmentation, modeled using a Gaussian field. The proposed model returns both the labels and a blur map. This model has been compared to other Markov models, the pairwise and hidden Markov random field models. Additionally, it has been compared to a filtering method from the state-of-the-art. The results indicate that the proposed triplet model is highly efficient and surpasses these other models. Moreover, this unsupervised method is also compared to two other supervised architectures, namely random forests and U-Net. This model has shown performances as good as the ones achieved by the trained models.
The M2M concept refers to a set of technologies enabling machine-to-machine communication without human intervention. It is applied in a variety of fields, including industry, healthcare, agriculture, logistics, smart houses and smart cities, where it contributes to the automation and optimization of operations.Securing M2M communications represents a major challenge, as conventional security protocols used in the Internet are inappropriate due to the large-scale deployment of M2M devices, and the limited resources of these machines in terms of energy, storage and processing. Alternatively, blockchain technology can theoretically provide security services such as integrity, authentication, availability and access control; however, there are challenges to overcome when used in the M2M context. To address security concerns in wireless M2M communications, this thesis introduces first, a lightweight authentication protocol based on a private blockchain.Secondly, to address scalability concerns, it suggests an authentication mechanism using a two-layer blockchain. Finally, a secure and energy-efficient multi-hop communication protocol using a two-layer blockchain is proposed for M2M communication security. The proposed solutions are evaluated by simulation under NS3, and compared with existing solutions. A security analysis has been verified using the AVISPA tool.

Zeolite-Templated Carbons as Supercapacitors: The Fundamental Role of Structural and Textural Properties
International audienceZeolite-templated carbons (ZTCs) with controlled properties (particle size, porous network, and structural organization) were used as model materials to understand their performance in supercapacitors. At low current rates (0.1 A g–1), the capacitance in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte is governed by the specific surface area and increases with the SBET up to ∼2300 m2 g–1 and then decreases for higher SBET. At a high current density (10 A g–1), the capacitance retention is affected by several ZTC properties. Higher mesoporous volume and lower C/O and C/H ratios (high O-groups and edge defect sites) lead to the capacitance retention enhancement. Among the long-range ordered ZTCs (FAU, EMT, and beta), beta ZTC shows the highest capacitance retention owing to its highest mesopore volume, which favors electrolyte diffusion. Moreover, the structural organization of ZTC proved to play an important role on the capacitance retention as well. Therefore, disordered materials (FAU-ZTC-anthracene) show higher capacitance (∼140 F g–1 at 0.1 A g–1), capacitance retention (67% at 10 A g–1), and long-term cycling (87% after 10000 cycles) than ordered materials (FAU-ZTC-ethylene). Overall, this work highlights the importance not only of the specific surface area but also of the pore architecture and organization, particle size, and chemical structure
