    Seeing the piles of the velvet bending under our finger sliding over a tactile stimulator improves the feeling of the fabric

    International audienceUsing friction modulation to simulate fabrics with a tactile stimulator (i.e. virtual surface) is not sufficient to render fabric touch and even more so for hairy fabrics. We hypothesized that seeing the pile of the velvet darken or lighten depending on changes in the finger movement direction on the virtual surface should improve the velvet fabric rendering. Participants actively rubbed a tactile device or a velvet fabric looking at a screen that showed a synthesized image of a velvet that either remained static (V-static) or darkening/lightening with the direction of touch (V-moving). We showed that in V-moving condition, the touched surface was always perceived rougher, which is a descriptor of a real velvet (Experiment 1). Using electroencephalography and sources localization analyses, we found increased activity in the occipital and inferior parietal lobes (Experiment 2) when seeing dark and shining traces during back-and-forth finger movements over the virtual surface. This suggests that these two posterior cortical regions work together to evaluate visuo-tactile congruence between the seen and the felt (tactile). The visuo-tactile binding, evidenced by neural synchronization (specifically, theta band (5-7 Hz) oscillation) in the left inferior posterior parietal lobule, is consistent with enhanced integration of information and probably contributed to the emergence of a more realistic velvet representation

    Multiphoton‐And SHG‐Active Pyrimidine‐Based Liquid Crystalline Thin Films Toward 3D Optical Data Storage

    International audienceAn original asymmetric achiral pyrimidine core molecule, with long carbon chains on one side and a coumarin fragment on the other, is designed. This advanced molecular structure enabled the spontaneous emergence of crystalline and liquid crystalline thin films with strong 2nd harmonic generation (SHG) without any corona polishing process or tedious deposition techniques. Moreover, pin‐pointed multiphoton absorption in the liquid crystalline phase effectively switches off the SHG signal locally and permanently, underlining its interest in 3D data storage. This prototypical material, which can be fully addressed by NLO processes, multiphoton writing, and SHG reading, paves the way for the development of efficient flexible materials for 3D optical data storage

    Objective To analyse explanted endografts (EGs) and describe fabric degradation responsible for type IIIb endoleaks. Methods As part of the European collaborative retrieval programme, 32 EGs with fabric defects on macroscopic evaluation were selected. The explanted EGs were processed and studied based on the ISO 9001 certified standard protocol. It includes instructions on the collection, transportation, cleaning, and examination of explanted material. The precise analysis was performed with a digital microscope of 20 – 200 times magnification. Possible perforation mechanisms were assessed in stress tests. Results The median time to explantation of the 32 EGs was 54 months. The explants included 65 separate EG modules, with 46 (70.8%) having a combined 388 fabric perforations. Each EG had a median of 4.79 mm2 (interquartile range [IQR] 9.86 mm2) of cumulated hole area (an average of 0.13% of an EG’s area). There were 239 (61.6%) expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE; 11 EGs) and 149 (38.4%) polyethylene terephthalate (PET; 21 EGs) fabric ruptures, with no difference in hole distribution between these types of material. Overall, 126 (32.5%) stent related and 262 (67.5%) non-stent related fabric perforations were identified. Perforations caused by fabric fatigue in ePTFE (151, 63.2%) and material kinking in PET (41, 27.5%) were the most common. The stent related perforations were larger in size (0.80 mm2) than non-stent related perforations (0.19 mm2); p < .001. Wider interstent spaces and prolonged implantation duration were associated with an increased risk of stent related perforation development; p < .001 and p = .004, respectively. Large stent related perforations were also detected in the short term, suggesting mechanical issues as underlying causes. Conclusion The fabric of EGs may degrade and lead to the development of perforations. The largest perforations are stent related. Their occurrence and size depend on the implantation time and the EG shape affected by arterial tortuosity. The conclusions are limited to the samples from a select explant group

Here, we introduce a streamlined one-pot, 2-fold Cu-catalyzed C−N bond formation protocol for the efficient synthesis of diverse N-alkyl benzimidazoquinazolinone derivatives. This method showcases a broad substrate scope, leveraging readily accessible alkyl halides and delivers the desired cyclized products in excellent yields. Additionally, the methodology enabled the synthesis of an antitumor agent with satisfactory yield, highlighting its utility in medicinal chemistry endeavors

    Tales of a Failed Energy Region Project? Politics of Scaling and Postnuclear Transition in the Upper Rhine Valley

    International audienceRegions have become a popular scale for energy studies, questioning the characteristics which inhibit or foster transition. However, these studies have overwhelmingly focused on pre-existing administratively well bounded spaces. In this paper, we investigate the role of politics of scaling in the production of energy regions. We ground our research in the borderland of the Upper Rhine Valley, where we concentrate on the aftermath of the closure of the Fessenheim nuclear power plant (France). Institutional discourses quickly pointed to the Upper Rhine Valley as a coherent region to implement a postnuclear energy transition. However, these efforts defaulted and the process remained managed at the French level. When do energy regions fail? Data were collected through a systematic analysis of three local newspapers and 54 semi-directive interviews with French, German and Swiss civil servants involved in the process. Results underscore the role of discursive strategies which economized the debate, emerging conflicting narratives and lobbying efforts by local actors

    International audienceLa coopération intercommunale a été créée afin de permettre à des communes voisines de financer et de produire ensemble certains biens et services publics locaux (BPL). Toutefois, les conditions qui favorisent, ou au contraire qui freinent cette coopération intercommunale, ne sont pas bien connues. Pour éclaircir ce point, nous étudions ici les choix des communes françaises à transférer ou non certaines de leurs compétences au niveau intercommunal en estimant un modèle probit à effets de seuils. Deux résultats principaux émergent. La théorie économique prédit que les communes coopèrent d’autant moins facilement qu’elles sont hétérogènes. Or cela n’est vérifié que pour l’hétérogénéité de potentiel fiscal par habitant, mais pas concernant l’hétérogénéité des préférences des citoyens. De plus, un effet zoo est à l’oeuvre pour certaines compétences, pour lesquelles le transfert au niveau intercommunal requiert que l’intercommunalité atteigne une certaine taille minimale

    New Multifunctional Bipyrimidine‐Based Chromophores for NLO Active Thin‐Film Preparation.

    International audienceNew synthesized bipyrimidine-based chromophores presenting alkoxystyryl donor groups carrying aliphatic achiral and chiral chains in the 4 position, connected to electron-accepting 2,2-bipyrimidine cores have been synthesized. Their linear and nonlinear optical properties were investigated as well as their mesomorphic properties by various techniques (light-transmission measurements, polarized-light optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry measurements and two-photon excited fluorescence). The derivatives with achiral linear carbon chains were found to exhibit liquid-crystal properties with the formation smectic phases over large temperature ranges which were confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering analysis via stacking models. The nonlinear optical properties in the solid state for derivatives with C14 and the citronellol chains have been studied by wide-field second-harmonic generation and multi-photon fluorescence imaging, confirming centrosymmetry for these achiral mesogens and their excellent third-order nonlinearity whereas the chiral compound exhibits non-centrosymmetric organization resulting in a strong Second Harmonic Generation at the crystal state

    International audienceAn impossible subject, rape threatens the representational capacities of fiction and questions its relationship with reality. Yet it is omnipresent in fiction, from the myths of Antiquity to the TV series of the #MeToo era. How can we interpret this ongoing confrontation? How can we articulate aesthetic autonomy and ethical responsibility? To understand the exchanges between rape and fiction, the three authors turn to early modern works that speak of sexual violence, at a time when it remained largely taboo. From Boccaccio to Richardson, Shakespeare to Pauline Peyrade, Ovid to Sarah Kane, the book weaves together past contexts and present questions, and shows how fiction, through its mutations, responds to the many challenges posed by the representation of rape.Sujet impossible, le viol menace les capacités représentatives de la fiction et interroge ses rapports avec le réel. Il est pourtant omniprésent dans la fiction, depuis les mythes de l’Antiquité jusqu’aux séries télévisées de l'ère #MeToo. Comment interpréter cette confrontation continue ? Comment articuler autonomie esthétique et responsabilité éthique ? Pour comprendre les échanges entre viol et fiction, les trois autrices se tournent vers des œuvres de la première modernité qui parlent des violences sexuelles, à une époque où elles demeurent largement taboues.
