A CASE OF LYMPHEDEMA OF THE LOWER LIMBS AS A RESULT OF METASTATIC SPREAD TO THE LYMPHATIC VESSELS OF THE DERMIS
An unusual case of lymphedema is presented. It affects the lower limbs and chest, and is caused by localized metastatic proliferation to the dermal lymphatic vessels from a primary gastric carcinoma of the muciparous cell type
TEM AND SEM INVESTIGATIONS OF LYMPH HEARTS IN BIRDS
The fine structure of lymph hearts in birds is described.These organs could be made visible by applicationof marker medium and indirect and directinjection of contrast medium. As two special morphologicfeatures we note strange modified skeletalmuscle cells in the wall of the lymph hearts and efferentcollectors to the epidural spinal lymphovenoussinus. The lymph hearts possess valves that regulatethe passage of lymph from the lymphaticcopulatory organ and the thoracic duct into thevenous blood system
EFFECT OF LOW MOLECULAR FACTORS RELEASED DURING ALLOGENEIC INTERACTIONS OF LEUCOCYTES OR BRAIN CELLS ON PHA- AND LPS-INDUCED DNA SYNTHESIS IN LYMPHOCYTES
Male (A/Ph and C3H/Cbi/BOM) mice were used inour experiments. The cell-free supernatants of spleenmixed leucocyte cultures and allogeneic brain cortexcells were collected upon short-term incubation andtested in a comparative study. Spleen and brain lowmolecular factors were fractionated (ultrafiltrationand gel column cluomatography) and assayed fortheir activity in mitogen-induced 3H-thymidine incorporation into spleen lymphocytes.The specific release of the allogeneic spleen fraction(ASF-2) has been observed. A non-specific stimulatingeffect of ASF-2 on PHA- and LPS-activatedspleen lymphocytes was shown. In contrast, a nonpecificsuppress ive effect of brain fraction on PHAandLPS-stimulated lymphocytes was demonstrated.The opposite effects of spleen and brain factors canbe connected with their different composition.The lymphocyte cultures were not affected by spleenor brain factor, when cultured without the additionof mitogen.Positive and negative regulation or modulation oftriggering events in lymphocyte activation by thesefactors can be suggested
LYMPHOGRAPHY IN TOXOPLASMOSIS - A CASE REPORT

BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES IN THE BODY FLUIDS AFTER ISCHAEMIC TISSUE INJURY
Lymphatic and tissue fluid LDH activity increasessignificantly after 2 hr limb ischaemia but LDHcontent in tissue fluid is invariably higher thanin lymph. The differences increase further after 4 hrischaemia. The change of GOT concentration in thebody fluids is a less sensitive indicator of tissue damagethan the increase of LDH activity. A 2 or 4 hourischaemia does not lead to rupture of lysosomes andto a marked activity increase of the lysosomal enzymesacid phosphatase and beta glucuronidase intissue fluid and lymph. The earliest biochemical signsof cellular injury can be detected in the interstitialfluid of the damaged tissue
LYMPHOEDEMA, MACROPHAGES AND BENZOPYRONES
The role of macrophage in lymphoedema is discussed, with particular reference to post mastectomy lymphoedema. In the latter, the normal courseor event is detailed using clinical and experimental evidence. Particular imparlance is placed on the event of the latent phase since it is during thistime that important changes are occurring in the functioning of the blood-tissue-lymph system. These changes are not usually demonstrable clinically until the end of the latent phase when lymphoedema becomes manifest.Evidence suggests that the majority of these changes can be linked with changes in the functioning of the members of the mononuclear phagocytic system. Of particular importance is the disruption to the normal tissue remodelling processes as we know in lymphoedema the delicate balance between the deposition and lysis of collagenous fibres is shifted in favour of deposition ~ thus fibrosis occurs. The basic mechanisms behind such changes are discussed. A group of drugs, called the benzopyrones have been shown both clinically and experimentally to be of benefit in reducing most form of high protein oedema including lymphoedema. It is shown that they can do this by stimulating the rather depressed functioning of the members of the mononuclear phagoticsystem. The exact mechanism of action of these drugs is discussd wiith particular emphasis on coumarin which is one of the components of Venalot
COMPARISON OF RENAL AND CARDIAC LYMPH CONSTITUENTS
The concentration of various substances were meas·ured in renal and cardiac lymph and arterial andvenous plasma to determine if lymph constituentsmight indicate events occurring at the cellular levelin these two organs. The study utilized anesthetizeddogs. Magnesium, calcium, pyruvate and glucoseconcentrations were similar in the four fluids. Cardiaclymph contained significantly higher concentrationsof creatine phosphokinase, lactic dehydrogenaseand lactate. Renal lymph contained lower concentrationsof zinc and protein while both renal and cardiaclymph contained less copper than arterial plasma.Venous plasma contained more copper than theother fluids. It is concluded that lymph compositionreflects events occurring in the cells, especiallyfor substances that are not readily diffusable throughblood capillary endothelium
THE CIRCULATORY EFFECT OF DRUG ON LYMPHEDEMA
Various kinds of drugs are used to improve the lymphedemaof the extremities. In this report, a dye transducerwas applied on the site of edema of the leg,foot, or hand and indocyanine green was injectedintravenously. The change of circulating dye wasrecorded by means of dye densitometer. The edematoustissue showed higher dye concentration withlapse of time, while drugs, i.e., Esberiven®, urokinase,kallikrein, etc., accelerated the dye dilution. Thesedrugs have the effect to correct the stagnant microcirculationto a more steady flow in the region of edema
A FINE STRUCTURAL STUDY OF VARIATIONS IN PROTEIN CONCENTRATION IN LACTEALS DURING COMPRESSION AND RELAXATION
The ratios of plasma proteins and ferritin (introducedinto the gut) were determined between thejejunal lacteals and the interstitial channels in puppies.This was done by fine structural densitometryand the counting of molecules, respectively. In thenormal state this ratio was ~2. In portions of tissuewhose smooth muscle had been relaxed by atropinethe ratio was ~1; in others, where the muscle hadbeen contracted by Carbacol, it was ~3. Theselatter correspond approximately to the filling-phaseand the emptying-phase of the initial lymphaticcycle, respectively. Thus the evidence wasstrengthened for an hypothesis, which holds that thefilling is caused by the high effective colloidalosmotic pressure of the concentraded lymph
EXPERIMENTAL OPACIFICATION OF MEDIASTINAL LYMPH NODES BY INTRAPERITONEAL INJECTION OF AN IODINATED FATTY EMULSION
Absorption and lymphatic drainage of several lipiodolemulsions injected intraperitoneally have beenstudied in the rabbit and rat. Good opacificationof the lymphatic channels and mediastinal lymphnodes is obtained in several hours with fine emulsionsand in several days with coarse emulsions.The tolerance is related to dose, and the peritonealreaction was moderate with the low doses, similarto that caused by the administration of physiologicsaline alone. Computerized tomography in detectinglow contrasts attained with small doses couldrender this method of indirect lymphographypossible in man
