ACCIDENTAL VISUALIZATION OF MESENTERIC LYMPH NODES BY BIPEDAL LYMPHOGRAPHY
A case is presented of mesenteric lymph nodes filling accidentally by bipedal lymphography. The radiographs were interpreted erroneously as pathologic; consequently the patient was treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The correct diagnosis was made later by explorative laparotomy

Lymph was collected in anaesthetized mice by anewly developed cervical approach (see precedingpaper). Short term drainage, which should not al terthe colloid-osmotic forces, meets the physiologicalrequirements for determination of proteincontent and enzyme activities in lymph and plasma.For cellular enzymes such as creatine kinase, lactatedehydrogenase, and aspartate aminotransferase,lymph plasma ratios higher than 1 are reported.Besides the well known lymphatic transport routefor protein and albumin, the highly significantlymphatic transport of cellular enzymes to theactual intravasal enzyme activity is emphasized
PASSAGE THROUGH THE LYMPH NODE. I I. FUNCTIONAL DEPENDENCE ON THE SITE OF APPLICATON OF ANTIGENS
Following a previous comment on the compartmentalization of lymph nodes by lymphography performed through separate bundles of afferent lymphatics, theauthors attempted to prove that sectoral arrangement has its functional equivalent, too. They found an elective uptake of tritiated thymidine and a rather circumscript response in cellular activity, if antigenic stimuli - such as VX-2 carcinoma cells and living BCG colonies -were transferred through the same bundle of afferent lymphatics which supply the lymph node part investigated
HIGH-SENSITIVITY OPTICAL LYMPH FLOW-METER
An optical flow-meter is described which allowsprecise and continuous registration of the flow oflymph from cannulated human lymph vessels. Thecannula from the lymph vessel is connected to themeasurement tubing of the instrument where theflow is measured by automatically monitoring themovement of an air bubble introduced into the flowat the beginning of the measurement. The limit ofsensitivity of the instrument is about 0.1 J.LI, allowingreliable registration of stroke volumes of about1 J.LI which typically occur in human leg lymphatics.The size and capacity of the instrument were chosento be suitable for clinical use. THE INFLUENCE OF ABSORPTION/ENTEROSORPTION AND PARTIAL OCCLUSION OF THE PORTAL VEIN ON THE QUANTITY AND COMPOSITION OF THE INTESTINAL LYMPH
What influence does the admixture of absorbedwater exert on the rate of flow and compositionof the lymph? To analyse this question rats weregiven twice distilled water 20 ml/kg intraduodenally.As a result of this fluid loading, lymph flowrosa to approx. 400% of its initial value, and thislymphagogue reaction lasted some 30 min. Therewas a time-related decrease in PVP filtration coefficientend in the total density and the proteincontent of the lymph. However, the decrease inthese values was less than would have been expectedfrom the "dilution effect" caused by the absorptionof the water.After lntraduodenel instillation of mannitol solution(six times isotonic in relation to blood} in adose of 7 ml/kg there was enterosorption of waterout of the blood into the intestinal lumen, or inother words this induced a reverse flow of water~ga l nst the direction of intestinal absorption. Asmight be expected, the quantity of intestinal lymphdiminished, while the PVP filtration coefficientend the density and protein content of the lymphrose, though once again less than would have beenexpected from the decrease in lymph flow.Aller partial occlusion of the portal vein for 10min lymph flow rose to an average of seven timesits initial value. Under these conditions there waselso a decrease in the PVP filtration coefficientend In the density and protein content of thelymph, which once again was less than might havebeen expected from the increase in lymph flow.Intestinal lymph occupies a special position amongthe lymphs produced by the organs of the bodyin that it is derived from two sources: capillaryfiltration and absorbed water. In view of the behaviourof the PVP filtration coefficient and the densityand protein content of the lymph under variousconditions - absorption of protein-free water, enterosorptionof fluid from the blood into the intestinallumen, and partial occlusion of the portal vein(which raises capillary filtration pressure} - Itseems implausible that the plasma-lymph barriercan be envisaged merely as a simple membrane withpores and leaks. The concept of a matrix-like layerseems to offer a much better explanation of theexperimental results
LYMPH FLOW CHARACTERISTICS AND MICROVASCULAR EXCHANGE: AN ANALOG COMPUTER SIMULATION
Lymphatic flow characteristics, which include both progressive lymphatic blockage and plateau of lymph f low with increasing interstitial fluid volume, were incorporated into an analog computer simulation of microvascular exchange, and their effects on interstitial fluid volume and protein content were investigated. The steady state and t ransient response of the microcirculation to changes in the properties ofthe lymph flow system are reported. The interstitial fluid and protein content is investigated as a function of venous pressure and for changes associatedwith the lymph flow characteristics. The interstitial protein content is generally more sensitive to changes 1n the lymph flow properties than is interstitial fluid volume. Properties of lymphatic drainage of tissues as they effect microvascular exchange are discussed
CHOLINERGIC AND ADRENERGIC INNERVATION OF MESENTERIAL LYMPH VESSELS IN GUINEA PIG
The innervation of lymph vessels in guinea pig mesentery was studied by light and electron microscope using histochemical techniques. The cholinergic fibers run prevalently longitudinal in the perivascular connective tissue, only brief segments show a loose network. The lymph vessels wall, compared with that of blood vessels, shows few adrenergic nerve fibers locate d in the adventitia outside the smooth muscle cells. The possible role of the nervous system in the Motor control of the lymph vessels is discussed
