PULMONARY OXYGEN TOXICITY: INCREASED MICROVASCULAR PERMEABILITY TO PROTEIN IN UNANESTHETIZED LAMBS
To study transvascular filtration of fluid and microvascular permeability to protein in the lung during prolonged hyperoxia, we measured lung lymph flow protein transport, and simultaneous pulmonary vascular pressures of six lambs breathing 100 percent O2 for five days. Lymph flow doubled, protein flow increased by 131 percent, and radioactive tracer studies demonstrated a clearcut increase in pulmonary microvascular permeability to protein after five days of continuous O2 breathing
ROENTGENOGRAPHIC AND CLINICAL SIGNS IN YELLOW NAIL SYNDROME
The yellow nail syndrome is a rare condition con isting of thickened opaque yellow nail, lymphedema and respiratory symptoms such as bronchitis or pleural effusions. In a 25 year-old woman, presenting all clinical signs of this syndrome, lymphangiography revealed impaired lymphdrainage of both legs. Both, number and size of the lymph vessels and regional lymph nodes were found to be reduced and several extravasations of the contrast medium were noted.Lymphangiography may help to establish the diagnosis of yellow nail syndrome, especially if the association of clinical anomalies is incomplete
MORPHOLOGICAL STUDIES ON THE RAT LIVER AND A BIOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF THE SERUM FOLLOWING EXPERIMENTAL LIGATURE OF THE THORACIC DUCT
After ligature of the thoracic duct of rats the spaces of Disse and Mall as well as the lymphatic vessels in the portal tracts and the lymphatic vessels along the Vv. hepaticae dilate. There are necroses of hepatocytes at the periphery of the liver lobules and microscopical findings which are indicative of lympho-biliary fistulae. After 12-15 days the morphological changes regress more or less.During the 1st day the serum enzyme activities show an obvious increase in LDH, a fairly small rise in GOT and GPT and a decrease in alkaline phosphatase. Thereafter, only insignificant fluctuations, deviating very little from normal GOT, GPI and LDH values, can be observed. The alkaline phosphatase remains decreased during the whole duration of the experiments. The triglycerides, too, show a decrease in comparison with the normal values, whereas the total lipids and the total cholesterol exhibit only small fluctuations, not deviating very much from normal values. In the case of animals which were observed during a longer period, the wet weight of the liver was lower than that of healthy control animals
RESTORATION OF THE PRIMARY IMMUNE RESPONSE AND PREVENTION OF WASTING BY PREGNANCY IN NEONATALLY THYMECTOMIZED FEMALE RATS
Pregnancy restored the impaired immune capacity of neonatally thymectomized rats towards normalcy, as measured by the serum haemolysin response to sheep red blood cells (SRBC). Pregnancy also prevented the development of the wasting syndrome in these animals. The beneficial effect of one pregnancy lasted at least five months
THE FLOW RATE AND MACROMOLECULE CONTENT OF HILAR LYMPH FROM THE RABBIT'S KIDNEY UNDER CONDITIONS OF RENAL VENOUS PRESSURE ELEVATION AND RESTRICTION OF RENAL FUNCTION - STUDIES ON THE ORIGIN OF RENAL LYMPH
The aim of this investigation was to ascertain whether renal lymph can be correctly thought of as mixed product consisting of protein-free fluid reabsorbed from the renal tubules together with plasma.By progressively compressing the terminal segment of the renal vein the hydrostatic pressure within it was raised to over 40 mmHg. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and the absolute amount of fluid reabsorbed fell simultaneously to 20% of their initial values. Lymph flow in a renal hilar lymphatic rose proportionately to renal vein pressure by a factor of up to 10. The concentrations of protein and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, MW 110,000) in the renal lymph remained unaffected at levels of 76 ± 13% and 56 ± 21% of their respective plasma concentrations. The intrarenal 131 I-albumin pool also remained un changed at 19.7 ± 4.3 ml plasma/100 g kidney. It is concluded that renal lymph is formed mainly by a filtration process from plasma. The results provide evidence against any admixture of protein-free reabsorbed fluid with the renal lymph
LYMPHOGRAPHIC-HISTOLOGIC CORRELATION IN PATIENTS WITH HODGKIN'S DISEASE AND NON-HODGKIN'S LYMPHOMA UNDERGOING STAGING LAPAROTOMY
This report briefly describes the results of an on-going prospective study of the accuracy of lymphography in unselected, previously untreated patients with Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Careful lymphographic-histologic correction of material obtained at staging laparotomy revealed a diagnostic accuracy of greater than 90%. Almost all errors occurred as false-positive diagnoses
INSTRUMENTS FOR LYMPHOLOGY
Lymphography is a well known and widely used radiologic investigation, devisedby Kinmonth (3) in 1952. Several investigators have suggested modifications of theoriginal method, to render the execution easier (1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10). Our experience covers 1500 lymphographies, since September 1961. We have considered many of the technical innovations proposed by other workers but finally we found that we had to design new instruments in order to greatly reduce the difficulties of exposing and cannulating lymph vessels
CYTOLOGY OF THE TONSILS
The tonsils are part of the lymphoreticular system and their histology is well known. But in spite of the abundantly available material from tornillectomies, records of cytological investigations are scarce (4). This is the more surprising since less accessible organs, for example lymph nodes and spleen, have been examined repeatedly and extensively (1, 3, 6, 10, 11).This may he due to the still widespread underestimation of cytology in comparisonwith histology and has also been mentioned by Leiber in connection with the cytology of lymph nodes. The two techniques - histology and cytology - are not competitive but complementary and their combined use is often of great value for clinical diagnosis (9). The cytology of lymph nodes and the spleen is familiar to the experienced haematologist. From this point of view the results of the cytological examination of tonsils from 103 cases are described here. The indication for tonsillectomy in all cases was chronic inflammation
