SPLEEN REGENERATION IN MICE AFTER GAMMA IRRADIATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF THYMOSIN
The effect of thymosin (thymic humeral factor isolated from calf thymus) on regeneration of the spleen in mice after whole-body gamma irradiation was studied. Thymosin, in varied dosages (0.1-2.0 mg/day) applied subcutaneously before and after radiation exposure, stimulated splenic regeneration as indicated by increased splenic weight, number of endogenous splenic colonies and 59Fe and 125IUdR incorporation into the spleen. A control extract of brain tissue (cerebrosin) isolated in the same way as thymosin was applied to mice to verify specificity of thymosin. After cerebrosin application, a mild increase also was observed. Whereas a near maximal effect of thymosin was reached at a dosage of 0.1 mg, a comparable response with cerebrosin required a dosage of 1.0 mg. These data suggest that administration of thymosin has both a specific and nonspecific effect on splenic regeneration and proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells
THE EFFECT OF ISCHAEMIA ON LYMPH NODES AND THE LYMPHATIC CIRCULATION
The changes in the superficial inguinal lymph node of the pig following either occlusion of all its blood supply, or occlusion of blood supply plus intra-arterial injection of Thrombin, or of a sclerosing agent (Ethanolamine), were studied by lymphography and histology.After occlusion of blood vessels only, the nodes rapidly recovered to normal. After occlusion of the blood supply plus intra-arterial injection of Thrombin the changes were more marked but recovery was good though not quite normal. After occlusion of blood supply and intra-arterial injection of Ethanolamine damage to the lymph node was much more marked, and obstructive changes were seen on lymphography with only a little evidence of recovery.Neither the effects of quiet thrombosis nor those of more violent inflammation appear to explain or parallel the changes occurring in clinical primary lymphoedema

lliofemoral ligation, isolation or excision does not cause edema in the hind legs ofthe dog (4-6). However, lymphatic obstruction secondary to venous thrombosis caused massive edema of the limb (5) and edema also resulting from thrombosis caused by the injection of barium sulphate (1). This study is concerned with the question of whether iliofemoral thrombosis leads to secondary lymphatic obstruction and with the relationship between the extent and level of thrombosis and lymphatic obstruction
LYMPHATIC DYNAMICS IN FILARIAL CHYLURIA AND PRECHYLURIC STATE - LYMPHOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF 52 CASES
Chyluria is an abnormal urinary condition in which intestinal chyle appears in the urine as the result of fistulous communications between the lymphatic pathways (transmitting chyle) and the uriniry tract at, or beyond the level of the renal tubules either within the kidney, the renal pelvis or the urinary bladder.Lymphatics of the kidney (Fig. 1) fall into three groups - (1) inter-tubular lymphatics - within the substance of the kidney; (2) sub-capsular lymphatics, and (3) perinephric lymphatics. Groups (2) and (3) communicate with each other and join the renal pelvic lymphatics (4) to drain into the superior mesenteric nodes (5). The intertubular lymphatics, coursing along and around the renal vascular pedicle and through the upper para-aortic nodes (viz.), superior mesenteric and coeliac nodes (6), terminate finally into the cisterna chyli (7). Many of the right renal lymphatics and a few from the left drain directly into the cisterna chyli (Fig. 9). Corresponding vessels from the left kidney drain mainly into the descending intercostal trunk (8) which joins the cisterna chyli. The pelvic and para-aortic lymphatics traverse the upper para-aortic nodes before draining into the cisterna chyli as right and left lumbar trunks (9). The intestinal lymphatics carrying chyle also course througb these nodes to terminate in cisterna chyli as gastrointestinal trunk (10). It may thus be noted that the three tributaries of the cisterna chyli (viz.) the right and left lumbar trunks and the gastro-intestinal trunk course through the upper para-aortic nodes prior to their termination into cistcrna chyli and these nodes also act as intermediary stations for the renal and renal pelvic lymphatics. Whenever there is an obstruction to the flow of chyle at the level of the upper para-aortic nodes - (as happens in filarial chyluria, due to fibrotic changes in the lymph nodes) - , the intestinal chyle being unable to course through these nodes takes a deviated retrograde course along the renal and renal pelvic lymphatics which become engorged with chyle and in due course the hydrostatic pressure in them increases to sufficient magnitude as to cause rupture into the renal tubules or into the renal pelvis with resultant escape of intestinal chyle into the urinary tract and its appearance in the urine
CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOLUTION OF THE QUESTION OF LYMPHO-VENOUS ANASTOMOSES IN HEART OF DOG
The efferent lymphatic vessels of the heart were ligated in 35 dogs and afterwards the systems of lymphatic and blood vessels were filled with various media by injection. Twelve of these dogs were sacrificed 30 min. after ligature and the remaining 23 dogs were left to survive for two to 132 days.After acute ligature of lymph routes, no lymphatic anastomoses could be found. In the protracted experiment, lympho-lymphatic anastomoses had developed between the interrupted trunks and very thin ones at the sites of adhesions between the epicardium and pericardium by the seventh to 14th day. In five out of 23 dogs, lymphovenous anastomoses of a calibre of 40-60 µm. were found between the seventh and 28th day after ligature. After one month, these LVA could no longer be found. Both forms of anastomoses, i.e. lympho-lymphatic and lymphovenous, may be present at the same time. The mutual relationship between these forms was discussed in the paper
