Environmental remediation and its discontents: the contested cleanup of Vieques, Puerto Rico
Since protest forced the US Navy off Vieques Island, Puerto Rico in 2003, the US military has embarked on one of the largest environmental remediation projects it has ever undertaken. This article explores the way a narrowly conceived, technocratic cleanup process is translated onto an island with a deep history of grassroots mobilization and antagonism towards federal authority. The Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) is a crucible for considering the uneasy dynamics of cleanup. US law enshrines the RAB as the principal venue for "public participation" in the cleanup process. However, the prevailing technocratic framework, constrained by under-resourced bureaucratic agencies, clashes with more encompassing concepts of environmental justice. Citizen members of the RAB, nonetheless, approach the committee as a point of access to information about the remediation process, and leverage their participation as a tool for advancing a broader set of environmental justice claims
Cultural and Religious Impacts of Long-Term Cross-Cultural Migration Between Egypt and the Levant
An increase of cross-cultural learning as a consequence of increased travel and migration between Egypt and the Levant during the Iron Age occurred after millennia of migration in earlier times. The result was an Egyptian-Levantine koine, often not recognized as relevant by historians due to an uncritical reproduction of ancient myths of separation. However, the cultural exchange triggered by migration is attested in the language, in the iconography of the region, in the history of the alphabet, in literary motifs, in the characterization of central characters of the Hebrew Bible and, last but not least, in the rise of new religions, which integrated the experience of otherness in a new ethos
Reevaluation of Connections Between Egypt and the Southern Levant in the Middle Bronze Age in Light of the New Higher Chronology
The Middle Bronze Age in the southern Levant has long been a period subject to chronological debate, discussion, and dissension. Despite the common use of conventional dates and correlations, there is in reality little consensus regarding the dates for either the beginning or the end of the period, with the result that its duration also remains in flux. Such chronological imprecision also results in an equal lack of clarity regarding the synchronisms and connections between the southern Levant and the regions and cultures around it, particularly in regard to ancient Egypt. The increasing availability of radiocarbon dates from secure stratigraphic locations, as well as the absolute chronology that results from them, however, now emphasizes the need to reevaluate the traditional and conventional synchronisms, contacts, and connections between these cultures and highlights the importance of understanding the significance of these changes in chronology for examining development in the southern Levant
The Absolute Chronology of the Middle Bronze Age Palace at Tel Kabri: Implications for Aegean-Style Wall Paintings in the Eastern Mediterranean
A recent set of radiocarbon dates, run by the Oxford laboratory, has returned results considerably higher than expected for several phases of the Middle Bronze Age Canaanite palace at Tel Kabri. The samples suggest a date that is at least a century earlier than expected, which would indicate that miniature frescoes were being painted at Kabri well before their appearance at Santorini. The dates also bring back into play a possible narrative of an artistic influence that traveled from east to west, rather than the opposite, just as Woolley originally suggested when excavating at Alalakh. However, the situation could conceivably also be much more complex and not nearly as linear in one direction or the other. Moreover, it remains to be seen if the radiocarbon dates are accurate; we will be retrieving more samples and dating them in coming seasons
THE PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF LYMPHEDEMA AND THE ACTION OF BENZO-PYROMES IN REDUCING IT
The pathogenesis of lymphedema is briefly reviewed. Swelling secondary to lymphostasis shares the common deleterious effects of other edemas, especially those of chronic high protein edema, namely chronic inflammation with excess tissue fibrosis. Benzo-pyrones are the only known drugs which reduce the excess protein in the tissues with high protein edema including lymphedema. Once excess tissue protein is resorbed, edema subsides and the fibrosis slowly resolves by remodeling. Two of these benzo-pyrone drugs have been shown to reduce postmastectomy and primary lymphedema in randomized, double-blind, cross-over, placebo-controlled trials. One of these drugs (which is also inexpensive) has also been shown to reduce filaritic lymphedema and elephantiasis in a similar trial in India. The bigger the leg initially, the more rapid is the reduction. In this extreme condition about a 20% lessening of the excess volume occurs each year. The benzo-pyrones do not work rapidly, but they do convert a rapidly worsening condition into a slowly improving one. In addition, they have extremely low toxicity and are effective orally. They also seem to reduce the incidence of secondary acute inflammation
THE LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE OF THE PERICADIAL SPACE IN THE DOG
The purpose of this study was to characterize definitively the lymphatic drainage system of the pericardial space in the dog. The reports on this subject, based on dissection experiments and acute dye injections, remain controversial, and our own previous studies have been incomplete. Seventeen dogs were studied using a radiographic technique. Micropulverized barium sulfate instilled into the pericardial sac was followed with serial chest x-rays in seven dogs with intact cardiac lymphatics, in seven dogs after section of the cardiac lymphatic drainage node (the cardiac lymph node) in the right upper mediastinum, and in three dogs after resection of cardiac drainage lymphatic nodes in the left upper mediastinum. These studies revealed that the lymphatic drainage of the pericardial space is via (a) the principal coronary lymphatic which drains from the left ventricular muscle and passes to the right upper mediastinum via the cardiac lymph node, (b) the lesser coronary lymphatic which drains the right ventricular muscle and passes to the left upper mediastinum, and (c) bilateral internal mammary (parasternal) lymphatic chains. These observations are important in planning experimental approaches to the effects of impairment of lymph drainage from the pericardial space. An understanding of the lymph drainage from the pericardial space may prove significant to understanding fibrotic reactions within it and the pathologic mechanisms of such entities as constrictive pericarditis
