    Fempreneurs or organic tea farmers? Entrepreneurialism, resilience and alternative agriculture in Darjeeling, India

    AbstractIn this article I underscore how women organic tea farmers build economic resilience through dual enactments as "organic farmers" and as "entrepreneurs." In substantiating both, women question the limited optics through which Fair Trade type sustainability ventures measure their work for a tea cooperative, as well poorly recognizing their entrepreneurial work in their households and community. Women are deeply aware of the politics of Fair Trade where their productive and reproductive labor is appropriated through the labor of organics, where women not only produce the organic green leaf tea but also produce narratives of Fair Trade's success in its certification and gender audits. Thus, to understand what sustains the new wave of "sustainable agriculture" in the global South, we must explore the intersections of organic farming practices with emerging discourses and practices of gendered entrepreneurialism in organic farming communities. In Darjeeling, India, women provide the labor necessary to sustain organics that should ideally come from the Indian state or international trading partners. They fill the gap through their labor, time, creativity and risk-taking. I contend that the success of organic farming depends on critical maneuvers that entail economic and cultural entrepreneurialism, and demonstrate forms of resilience expressed through which women farmers identify and navigate the inadequacies of alternative agriculture and related Fair Trade practices.Keywords: Women organic tea farmers, women entrepreneurs, Fair Trade, rural Darjeeling, risk-taking, resilienc

    A Nondestructive Method to Estimate Standing Crop of Purple Threeawn and Blue Grama

    We used multiple regression analysis to develop models to predict standing crop of purple threeawn (Aristida purpurea Nutt.) and blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis [H.B.K.] Griffiths) nondestructively. Data were collected for 3 yr on the Texas TechUniversity Native Rangeland, Lubbock, TX, USA. Independent variables included plant length and area measurements (basal area and cross-sectional area at a 7.5-cm plant height and at 50% of total plant height). One hundred randomly selected plants of each species were measured in June 2008; 50 plants of each species were measured in June 2009 and 2010. Coefficients of determination exceeded 0.91 for both species in all 3 yr of measurement. For both species and years, cross-sectional area at 7.5 cm was the most important single predictor variable. For each species, models differed among years. Our regression models were successful at predicting mid- to late-season standing crop of purple threeawn and blue grama grass and provide an effective method for nondestructive monitoring of these species. This approach should be applicable to similar morphotypes of these species

    Website developers are in charge of creating usable, useful and satisfactory products for their target audiences. Library websites are a crucial asset to the students, faculty, and staff at the colleges. User experience and usability testing play a significant role in the successful delivery of services and user satisfaction of libraries’ online services.The goal of this research study was to determine the issues with the one of the Midwestern college’s library website and to come up with the design recommendations to enhance services for not only for the college but also all online library service developers.This study uses a mixed method to collect quantitative and qualitative data, to make the evaluation more reliable and evaluates three dimensions of User Experience (UX) which include effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction. The data were collected through multiple phases including demographics of participants, pre-defined task test, subjective satisfaction survey, and a semi-structured interview.The research results indicate that the complexity in design increases the task completion time and leads users to quit. Additionally, advanced search capability increases the success of the library’s online services. The results would be of great importance to the library web developers to create user-friendly services that provide more benefits to the students as well as the academic community.DOI:10.2458/azu_itet_v6i2_demir

    MEASUREMENT OF CAPILLARY FRAGILITY: A USEFUL TOOL TO DIFFERENTIATE LIPEDEMA FROM OBESITY?

    Lipedema is a disproportional obesity featuring spontaneous or light pressure-induce pain and frequent hematoma formation due to even minor traumatic injuries. It is generally distinguished from general obesity primarily based on clinical hallmarks; however, this becomes difficult when appearing in a concomitant form (combination of obesity and lipedema). Our study group has recently demonstrated that lipedema-associated bruising is correlated with increased capillary fragility (CF) and also that CF could be significantly improved by complex decongestive physiotherapy (CDP). In this study, we measured CF in female subjects with lipedema (15) or non-complicated obesity (15) who were body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) matched. CF was evaluated with the vacuum suction method (VSM) using Parrot’s angiosterrometer in both groups. Application of VSM resulted in a significantly higher number of petechiae in subjects with lipedema. Capillary fragility measurement appears to be a useful differential diagnostic tool between lipedema and obesity under these trial parameters

    SUCCESSFUL MULTI-MODAL TREATMENT OF GRADE IV LYMPHEDEMA IN LYMPHATIC FILARIASIS: A CASE STUDY

    We present an integrated therapeutic approach performed on a 37 year old female with giant lymphedema (Grade IV) due to lymphatic filariasis of 27 years duration. Our therapeutic approaches consisted of a basic foot care program for two weeks, followed by a course of oral penicillin for a week including conservative treatment with complete decongestive therapy (CDT) together with respiratory physiotherapy and walking exercises. In addition, advanced surgical techniques with supra-fascial excision of alternate lumps in three stages over an interval of ten days followed by a nodo-venal shunt resulted in reversing the stage IV lymphedema condition. Over a ten year followup, the patient remains essentially unchanged confirming the success of the treatment without any recurrence or complications. Finally, by combining multimodal treatment, we were able to achieve a near normal limb in Stage III and Stage IV lymphedema of the lower limb in lymphatic filariasis
