Elements of Therapeutic Nature-Based Programs Essential for Skill Development of Children Ages 6-12: A Qualitative Study of Practitioners in the Field
Evidence supports the natural environment as an ideal context for developing critical childhood skills, including sensory integration, sensorimotor, and social emotional skills. This knowledge has influenced the development of therapeutic nature-based programs across disciplines; however, limited literature explores these practices, especially for elementary-aged children. This study conducted focus group interviews with practitioners to gather rich data on the essential components of therapeutic nature-based programs. Results from the data support using therapeutic nature-based programs to help children develop their orientation to others and the environment, sense of self, self-regulation, and sensory integration skills. The study provides specific examples of a facilitation style and materials. Future assessments looking at the effectiveness of therapeutic nature-based programming on the development of particular skills will further validate these findings
The Influence of a Universally Designed Playground on the Play Interactions between Grandparents and Their Grandchildren
The current study analyzes how a universally designed playground impacts grandparents and their grandchildren. Specifically, this paper reports the analysis of survey and online short answer questions from 28 grandparents who visited the universally designed playground with their infant, toddler, and preschool-age grandchildren. The majority of the grandparents participated in swinging, running, hiding and seeking activities, and playground equipment activities with their grandchildren. Despite the universal design of the playground, grandparents reported that some of the pieces of playground equipment were inaccessible to them due to their age and/or use of assistive devices. However, benefits of having a universal design playground that is mostly ground-level, as explained by study participants, includes the ability to play with their grandchildren and manage their grandchildren’s behavior while they were visiting the playground. By designing and building playgrounds that respond to their community’s evolving needs and preferences, parks and recreation administrators may improve the economic well being of their community, create safer neighborhoods, revitalize the community, and promote positive physical and emotional health in consumers of all ages. 
Street Subculture: Children\u27s Livelihood Strategies for Surviving on the Streets of Addis Ababa
This study explored the livelihood strategies children employ to survive on the streets of Addis Ababa. Street life demands children actively form social relationships with the public and their peers. Street subculture includes aspects of children’s creativity, organized to present their sufferings, elicit emotion from passersby, and sympathy from alms-givers. The street subculture also includes the entertainment strategies children use to secure their livelihood. The strong social bonds and supportive relationships that underlie the street subculture reflect children\u27s solidarity. This study recommends that interventions aimed at improving the lives of street children should consider their needs, skills, and creativity. 
Using student interests and goals to foster inclusion, belonging, and pedagogical strength
Abstract: Diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives have come under scrutiny recently, being viewed by some as a distraction that weakens universities and threatens their ability to educate students (Moody, 2023). I use an approach to foster a sense of inclusion and belonging, however, that I believe has made my course pedagogically stronger. In this reflective essay, I describe how I solicit information about students’ academic interests and professional goals, then use that information to guide class content. Students see the connection between their academic interests and professional goals and the higher education environment, therefore reinforcing the belief that as the “owners” of these academic interests and professional goals, they belong in higher education, too

Abstract: The innovation and development of today\u27s society have profoundly impacted our world. Due to the constant changes in our environment, it is difficult to determine how such changes affect our overall health. In no other area of research is this truer than in the field of allergic asthma. Allergic asthma is an inappropriate immune response to environmental stimuli that causes chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and persistent coughing. For some, these symptoms are minor inconveniences, while for others they can be life-threatening. There is a proven genetic basis to allergic asthma, however, the rates of disease are increasing too quickly to be driven by genetics alone, suggesting a role for the environment. The Lewkowich laboratory aims to understand how environmental factors impact the immune responses underlying allergic asthma. Using animal models, as well as studying human disease, we study how the development and severity of allergic asthma are impacted by various environmental factors. This includes the timing of allergen exposure, parental allergen exposures, and heritability, and our microbiome and how it shapes immune responses to the environment. While we can diagnose and cure many diseases such as cancer, for allergic asthma the current diagnosis of the disease is often inefficient, not definitive, and results in poor treatment options. A better understanding of the environmental impacts on the disease is needed so that new therapeutics can be created to improve health outcomes for millions of people suffering from allergic asthma

Abstract: This project investigated the dehydrogenation reaction of Ni-TRISOX as a catalyst for the air oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde. It has been found that primary alcohols, specifically methanol, are catalytically oxidized in the presence of the Ni-TRISOX complex and ultimately forms formaldehyde through a reversible oxidation on the oximate nitrogen to form an iminoxyl radical. This project specifically investigated the impact that base has on the reaction and was analyzed via UV-Vis spectroscopy by recording the concentration of formaldehyde formed utilizing Hantzsch reagent
The Effects of Shoulder Position on Bicep Brachii Activation

Abstract: Our study aims to investigate how different shoulder positions affect the activation of the biceps brachii muscle during bicep flexion resistance exercises. Limited research shows that shoulder position from extended to neutral to flexed changes biceps activations. The purpose of this study is to investigate which shoulder position elicits the greatest relative EMG activation. The EMG of the biceps brachii will be measured in shoulder extension, anatomical position, and shoulder flexion. The EMG data will be derived from an elbow flexion curl exercise and a metronome will be used to keep consistent speed of repetitions. The EMG analyzed will consist of the peak normalized signal of a full concentric repetition. Each participant will have a 1RM measured in each of the shoulder positions and will be tested with the same relative load across each shoulder position. The expected results are that performing a bicep curl with the shoulder in an extended position will produce the greatest EMG activation, followed by the shoulder in anatomical and finally the least activation in the flexed position. The expected results that a bicep curl from a shoulder extended position would increase the activation due to the reduced force-generating capabilities in an extended position. This extended position would have increased biceps activations from having to recruit more muscle fibers to complete the biceps curl with the relative external load and the induced stretch of the biceps from the initial starting position.  
Genome Sequencing and Transcriptome Analysis of the Rocky Mountain Wood Tick

Abstract: Dermacentor andersoni, the Rocky Mountain wood tick, is an important vector for Colorado tick fever and Rock Mountain spotted fever. This tick has been understudied, and a better understanding of its biology is needed for developing disease prevention and vector control strategies. A genome was assembled for D. andersoni from long-read PacBio sequences and annotated with the NCBI eukaryotic genome annotation pipeline. The quality and completeness of the genome were high with most scaffolds matching chromosomes and a BUSCO score of 94.0%. Following our genome sequencing, this project identified specific genes involved in blood feeding across a range of tissue types and life stages for D. andersoni. To accomplish this, RNA-seq analysis was used to investigate differential gene expression in several tissues of D. andersoni adults, nymphs, and larvae from before and after feeding. Based on this analysis, several gene groups have been identified that are involved in blood feeding. Furthermore, we establish specific transcriptional profiles associated with sex and developmental stages for this tick. This outcome will further knowledge of blood feeding in ticks and allow for the development of strategies that limit the spread of diseases transmitted by ticks

Abstract: This study seeks to investigate and promote the integration of evidence-based practices in substance abuse recovery programs for adults, notably intensive outpatient programming, individual counseling, and peer support networks. As social workers, we strive to have a holistic view of the problem and incorporate multiple factors for clients to consider all their barriers to sobriety during treatment. Utilizing evidence of successful treatment can improve the stability of their mental health, and their sober support system, maintain their sobriety through healthy coping strategies, and allow for improved social worker-client relationships. The study analyzed the experiences of four adult women in the Off The Streets program who have obtained safe and affordable housing but are still participating in outpatient services as needed. The women provided feedback using a Likert scale to measure each intervention\u27s impact and answered 3 open-ended questions discussing their sobriety journey in the program
