    Community Engagement and the Road to a Greener Cincinnati

Solutions will not come from one person, two, or even millions of people. The effects of global warming will only be aided when all people work together, and the first step toward that goal is community engagement. I propose that a virtual and in-person environmental community center that stands to educate, incentivize, and inform the public could be the solution. The center would offer classes regarding lifestyle changes, hard to recycle item drop-offs, host clean-up days, and act as a resilience hub. The idea of a community center that focuses on environmental efforts has been tried, and even mastered, by communities before. For example, the Environmental Learning Center in Vero Beach, FL, awarded Candid platinum transparency, is an outdoor preserve that also offers classes and events regarding environmental stewardship. Even locally, organizations such as the Cincinnati Recycling & Reuse Hub, Scrap it Up, and Indigo Hippo are all working on sustainable efforts within the Cincinnati area, however they are not well known among the community. I suggest that the implementation of an environmental community center would be a beneficial addition to the Green Cincinnati Plan (GCP), a plan made by the city of Cincinnati to implement sustainable efforts throughout the city by the year 2050. If Cincinnati implemented an environmental community center accessible via the internet or in-person to all citizens of Cincinnati, environmental consciousness and awareness would be improved throughout the city

This plan will utilize the US EPA EJG2G resilience hub grant alongside city budget allocations to accomplish its goals. Through an exploration of the Green Cincinnati Plan (GCP), this study investigates the details of effectively establishing these hubs, with a specific focus on aligning with community resilience and sustainability priorities that have been outlined. The project\u27s rationale stems from the pressing need to address the rising regularity and severity of natural disasters, coupled with the recognition of the disproportionate impact this crisis imposes on vulnerable communities. By sourcing local data and forming partnerships with community organizations, the initiative aspires to ensure equitable access to resources while providing support during emergencies. When describing the benefits, such as heightened social cohesion, and potential drawbacks including resource constraints, the study illustrates a comprehensive picture of the project\u27s landscape. Policy analysis underscores the pivotal role of local, state, and national policies in supporting resilience efforts, while drawing insights from best practices in cities like New York City and Portland. Funding mechanisms will supply a diverse lineup of options, ranging from grants to public-private partnerships. The recommended next steps emphasize the main importance of community engagement, meticulous planning, and the establishment of robust monitoring mechanisms to facilitate successful implementation and ongoing adaptability

    Suicide Prevention in an In-Patient Setting

    Record ID: 112 Program Affiliation: Capstone Presentation Type: Poster Abstract: Inpatient suicide remains a pressing concern within inpatient healthcare settings,  necessitating effective prevention strategies and posing many challenges. This project aims to  educate and train nursing staff on the interventions that should be implemented to prevent suicide  in the inpatient population. Our main goal is to discover whether suicidal ideation patients in an  inpatient setting, with more vigorous monitoring via sitter, lead to less risk of self-harm attempts  during hospitalization. We created an education plan to present to a group of nine  medical-surgical nurses at the VA Hospital. It included a presentation on close proximity  monitoring, proper communication, effective handoff, and a pretest and post-test to assess their  knowledge. The presentation emphasized relevant statistics, appropriate interventions, self-harm  risk factors, and staff education specifically for patients with suicidal ideation. We examined the  nurses on the pretest questions to gauge initial knowledge, then presented our topic to educate  further. Following the presentation, the nurses completed the post-test. Two of the nurses got two  out of the four questions right, five got three out of four questions right, and two got every  question right on the pretest. Seven nurses got all the questions right on the post-test, and two got  three out of the four. The nurses were engaged throughout the presentation and stated they  believed these interventions would be helpful in their nursing practice to promote patient safety

    Increasing Treatment Compliance of Eating Disorder Patients by Decreasing Stimulating Triggers in the Meal

    Record ID: 154 Program Affiliation: Capstone and Co-op Presentation Type: Poster Abstract: Currently, patients have an increased risk of prolonged recovery as the current eating disorder protocol involves all patients eating in the same meal room. This environment negatively impacts patients by inducing stressful interactions. Purpose: The purpose of our project is to further understand as to why patients feel overstimulated during mealtimes and how the current practice doesn\u27t meet the holistic criteria for recovery. We created a PICOT question and found evidence to support our proposal of why eating disorder patients need a therapeutic milieu during mealtime. We provided education to five nurses on the medical surgical unit at a Children\u27s hospital. To evaluate the responses of the unit we conducted a pre and post test. Our survey included questions regarding level of comfort when caring for eating disorder patients. We also gathered the nurses\u27 opinions on the current treatment pathway. The survey responses were measured using a 1-5 scale (0-100%), with 1 representing not having enough knowledge to answer while 5 represents strongly agreeing with the statement. The pretest questions 9 University of Cincinnati   averaged a 70% which is a 3 on our 1-5 scale while our post test increased to 87% which is a 4. These results conclude that our presentation was well received by the nurses and that they are in support of changing the standard meal room protocol. This project provided a deeper understanding of eating disorder patients while evaluating if changes in the meal room environment could enhance recovery.&nbsp

    Interaction Between Pathogenic Infection and Environmental Toxins on Morphological Development of Wolf Spiders (Lycosidae)

    Record ID: 242 Award(s): Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentorship Program Affiliation: Capstone Presentation Type: Poster Abstract: Pollution with heavy metals such as lead (Pb) constitutes a major source of environmental contamination of natural ecosystems and the wildlife they contain. However, physiological stress from environmental toxins is not the only threat to wild animal populations, as risk of pathogenic infection is also present. Investigation into combined impacts of these physiological stressors and how they interact to affect individuals and populations is the objective of this study.  The brush-legged wolf spider, Schizocosa ocreata, is a model species for reproductive behavior and the factors that affect it as well as a biosentinel for environmental contamination. In this study we focused on the effects of lead exposure, pathogenic infection, and a combination of the aforementioned on the development of morphological traits in S. ocreata. Juvenile wolf spiders were collected from the Cincinnati Nature Center in fall 2023 and raised in a controlled lab until maturity. At the penultimate instar, spiders were either (a) treated with pathogens; (b) exposed to lead contaminated soil for 28 days; (c) both or (d) neither (controls). Initial measures of body morphology (size, weight) and indicator traits used by females in mate choice (foreleg tuft size and fluctuating asymmetry or FA) suggest that lead may be an important factor impacting development

    Record ID: 323 Program Affiliation: Service Learning Presentation Type: Video Abstract: This video presentation will tell the story of broadening the University of Cincinnati\u27s network by establishing connections with local and regional partners to create opportunities for UC students in India. Furthermore, our commitment extends to developing a comprehensive portfolio outlining the framework of the CCPS UC International Experiential Program in India. By meticulously documenting every aspect of the program, we aim to encapsulate its essence and vision by the project\u27s culmination.     Our methods included fully understanding the problem set as assigned by the client. This required us to not only research the client but to interact with the client several times, asking critical questions, and ensuring that we fully understood what was being asked. This step was followed by identifying potential solutions which were vetted with the client, this, after having an ambitious list the third-party providers who were contacted via email. After hearing back from potential partners, we shared this information with the client. The client then identified those of which we should reach out to and pursue. We then established connections and pivoted towards the process of creating final deliverables for the client.     This research experience has benefitted the group tremendously including the individuals in it. We have learnt to wrestle with ambiguity, overcoming obstacles, and demonstrating collective impact within our group and larger class so that our final deliverable for the client will be of high value and impact. The final deliverable given to the client included a vetted partner, and a detailed portfolio of potential curriculum

    In this presentation, I will explore the concept of smartphone burden through a multiple regression analysis of data from a survey. Extroversion was a significant predictor of smartphone burden. In addition, attachment avoidance was a marginally significant predictor of smartphone burden. Lastly, stress and fear of missing out were not significant predictors of smartphone burden.     The Misunderstood: A Discussion on Dissociative Identity Disorder & Multiple Personality Disorder

    In this presentation, I explore the misunderstood life of people with Dissociative Identity Disorder and Multiple Personality Disorder through a presentation and discussion of what reality is for these people. Multiple Personality Disorder and Dissociative Identity Disorder are widely misunderstood, making life for those diagnosed with these particularly harder. The media tends to depict these people as incapable of function or dangerous, which majority of the time is not the case. Because of the stigmas surrounding mental health, I will shed light on what life is like for those people who live with these disorders. Some major points of my research include that the stigma of Dissociative Identity Disorder (and Multiple Personality Disorder) is generally formed by the public media\u27s interpretation and dramatizing of the disorders. These media tend to frame the people diagnosed with these disorders as incapable of daily function or dangerous. People diagnosed may find complications with job and career placement, housing, and other stabilizing factors for the general person
