Do we still need to learn English in the age of artificial intelligence?
No full textEste documento presenta una investigación sobre la integración de la inteligencia artificial (IA) en la enseñanza del inglés como segunda lengua (L2) en el nivel de educación media superior en México y su impacto en aspectos clave del desarrollo social como la inclusión educativa y laboral. En un contexto social donde la baja competencia lingüística de los estudiantes y el creciente uso de herramientas de IA como los traductores automáticos, el estudio propone que la reflexión metalingüística es una estrategia esencial para maximizar su potencial. Por lo expuesto, el presente estudio empleó un diseño cuasi-experimental de un solo grupo (pretest-postest) con 15 estudiantes. La intervención consistió en actividades que los guiaban a identificar y corregir errores en textos traducidos por IA. Los resultados mostraron una mejora significativa y un efecto positivo en la capacidad de los estudiantes para comprender textos e identificar errores, lo que confirma la hipótesis de la investigación. Las conclusiones sugieren que la reflexión metalingüística empodera a los estudiantes para que sean agentes activos en su aprendizaje, superando las limitaciones de la IA. El trabajo también reconoce las limitaciones de la muestra y el diseño, y sugiere futuras líneas de investigación.This document presents a research study on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the teaching of English as a second language (L2) at the high school level in Mexico and its impact on key issues of social development, such as educational and labor inclusion. In light of students\u27 low linguistic proficiency and the growing use of AI tools, such as automatic translators, the study proposes that metalinguistic reflection is an essential strategy to maximize their potential. The research employed a single-group quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with 15 students. The intervention involved activities that guided them in identifying and correcting errors in AI-translated texts. The results showed a significant improvement and a large, positive effect on the students\u27 ability to comprehend texts and identify errors, which confirms the study\u27s hypothesis. The conclusions suggest that metalinguistic reflection empowers students to become active agents in their learning, overcoming the limitations of AI. The paper also acknowledges the study\u27s limitations, such as the small sample size, and proposes avenues for future research
Literature and Evolution: perspectives of Darwin and Wells on Human Progress
No full textEste artículo examina las perspectivas de la evolución y el progreso humano en las obras de Charles Darwin y Herbert George Wells. Se argumenta que la evolución no tiene un propósito ni una dirección, sino que es un proceso contingente y azaroso. En La máquina del tiempo, Wells ilustra un futuro distópico en el que la humanidad se ha dividido en dos especies: los Eloi, hedonistas y frágiles, y los Morlocks, brutales y subterráneos. Esta representación desafía la creencia en un progreso lineal y positivo, vinculando la teoría darwiniana de la selección natural con la crítica de Wells al ideal del progreso. This article examines perspectives on evolution and human progress in the works of Charles Darwin and Herbert George Wells. It argues that evolution has neither a purpose nor a predetermined direction but is instead a contingent and random process. In The Time Machine, Wells depicts a dystopian future in which humanity has split into two species: the Eloi, hedonistic and fragile, and the Morlocks, brutal and subterranean. This portrayal challenges the belief in linear and positive progress, linking Darwinian natural selection with Wells\u27s critique of the ideal of progress
