    Get PDF

This paper studies how digital natives’ film consumption habits have changed, using as a starting point a sample compound by university students between the ages of 18 and 24. The main objective we try to achieve is to show how important are becoming portable devices for the consumption of cinema and how they are affecting young adults’ habits of film consumption. The methodology applied is the statistical analysis of data, especially a quantitative one, collected from systematic surveys of closed questions. The results show how portability has become a key factor over the last couple of decades when consuming films and series. In this context, fragmented, and fragmentary cinematographic content is gaining more and more importance among young consumers. As an effect of this phenomenon, digital natives demand to watch cinema anywhere, anytime, and how they want it, a wish that the Video On Demand platforms (from now on, VOD platforms) have granted them. However, this environment where young adults are hyperconnected to these services has an effect of compulsive consumption of audiovisual materials upon these spectators, a behaviour better known as binge–watching. Something that, on the other hand, is typical of our society, in which immediacy and speed culture are crucial.

    No full text
This article, integrated into a broader initiative for the study, digitisation, and online publication of gender-sensitive terminology resources (DIGITENDER), is centred on a corpus-based methodology and approach to delve into the metaphoric language surrounding menstruation. Its primary goal is to illuminate prevalent figurative expressions and their implications on societal perceptions concerning women’s health and menstruation. Observing a relevant and representative corpus on the topic, our findings underscore a notable thematic concentration on health and hygiene-related metaphors. However, most of them, despite their science-centric nature, carry a significantly negative undertone, perpetuating stereotypes that cast menstruation as an unfavourable and stigmatised experience. This study positions menstruation within a broader social context, revealing a pervasive inclination to camouflage this natural phenomenon. Despite being a fundamental aspect of women's lives, metaphors often portray menstruation as an adverse event, a dark circumstance, or a longstanding taboo, transcending cultural and historical boundaries. By shedding light on these linguistic nuances, this research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the language used to discuss menstruation. Through this exploration and evaluation, we advocate for a shift towards inclusive and empathetic discourse surrounding women's health discourse.

Everyday conversation is considered a collaborative genre where participants seek harmony and agreement. Unlike genres such as television talk shows or parliamentary debates, everyday conversation is not inherently confrontational, though it is not devoid of conflicts. This study examines how conflict is linguistically manifested in spontaneous conversations, based on structural, interactional, and linguistic indicators identified in the literature. A corpus of family conversations recorded with a hidden microphone is used, labeled by a participant in the conversation. The analysis compares the definition of conflict in the literature with the participants' perception, identifying areas of overlap and discrepancy, and reflecting on the undefined zones between both perspectives. Liberté, Légalité, Souveraineté: Changing Meanings of an Allegory in Le Barbier’s Representations of the Déclaration des droits de l’Homme et du citoyen: CHANGING MEANINGS OF AN ALLEGORY IN LE BARBIER’S REPRESENTATIONS OF THE DÉCLARATION DES DROITS DE L’HOMME ET DU CITOYEN

This article analyzes three visual works representing the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man attributed to Le Barbier: two paintings and one engraving. The article makes the hypothesis that one painting was executed shortly after the Declaration in August 1789, while the other was made after the engraving, dated November 5, 1790. Treating visual works as texts and combining methods in art history and intellectual history, the article’s main argument is that the two paintings express different narratives and thereby different views on sovereignty. Identifying the right allegory as a genius figure of liberty, the first painting presents her annunciating the Supreme Being’s natural rights to monarchical France. The engraving erroneously claims the allegory to be the Law, while the setting is changed and the scepter points to the Supreme Being, thereby giving legitimate sovereignty to the National Assembly. This change marks an early representation of Republican France. This article analyzes three visual works representing the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man attributed to Le Barbier: two paintings and one engraving.

    Get PDF
This essay practices a hermeneutics analysis of Totality and Infinity from five epigraphs, all dedicated to exploring the multiple meanings of the Levinasian proposal about the transcendental foundation of the ethical. The first section seeks to analyze the relationship between what Lévinas designates as the visage of being and the concept of totality; in the following epigraph, the difference existing, within the temporal understanding of the total, between the historical and the eschatological is made explicit; the third section analyzes the motives that lead Lévinas to substitute the metaphysical for the ethical, revealing this second knowledge as the first philosophy; and finally, the fourth and fifth sections are dedicated to understanding two concepts that, intertwined, condense the conceptual matrix from which Lévinas emphasizes the originality of his proposal: the face of the other and the idea of infinity.
