The study investigated depression as a predictor of suicidal ideation among Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) undergraduate students. A sample of 118 students 65 males and 53 females were sampled in the study. The age range of the participants ranged from 17 to 27 years  with mean age of 19.68 and standard deviation of 2.33. Simple (balloting) and systematic sampling techniques were used in selecting the participants. Information was obtained from the participants through the administration of two instruments: Self-rating Depression Scale and Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation. The study adopted a correlational design while simple linear regression analysis was applied on the data. The result shows that the predictor variable (depression) accounted for 6.9% (R2 change) variance in suicidal ideation, which is significant to F change (1,116) = 8.543, sig.004; β = .218 t(118) = 2.923 sig. = 0.004. Gender as a control variable showed that female students are prone to suicidal ideation more than their male counterparts. The implications of this study were discussed in relation to literature reviewed and recommendations made. It was concluded that ESUT undergraduate students who manifest depression are may experience suicidal ideation

This paper is titled Revisiting Nigeria Bureaucracy in Era of Industry 4.0: the need for synergy. The aim is to determine the benefits and challenges of fourth industrial revolution and the need for the government further adopt measures to embrace the new innovations. The paper argues that the survival of bureaucracy as the Fourth Industrial Revolution gains momentum requires modern technological governance which is regularized by new technologies. This is a library research and a descriptive approach is used, with literature as the object of analysis, namely journals, online news, and books. The stakeholder theory is adopted as the theoretical framework of the study. The paper found among others that as new technological devices tend to replace human labour, the future of public administration is threatened. In conclusion, the paper is of the opinion that as the digital debate rages on, Nigeria governments should follow suit and voice their concerns rather than simply letting developed states dictate the developmental path to them. The papers therefore recommends that government needs to conduct skills training initiatives to capacitate civil servants on the use of modern technology; and civil servants need to be ready to adapt to changes presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It is also recommended that government bureaucracies should be able to integrate relevant stakeholders including private sector organization and map the way forward in terms of how the Fourth Industrial Revolution should be adopted and to what extent by both public and private sectors

Functional Utility Of Poverty In Nigeria

    No full text
Nigeria has one of the world’s highest economic growth rates, averaging 7.4%.Ironically, poverty still remains significant at 33.1%. For a country with massive wealth and a huge population to support commerce, a well-developed economy and plenty of natural resources such as oil and other solid minerals, the level of poverty remains unacceptable. As at 2018, population growth rate was higher than economic growth rate, leading to a slow rise in poverty.By2018 end, almost half the population is living below the international poverty line ($2 per day), and unemployment peaked at 23.1%. This paper attempts to locate this paradox on the socio-political and economic administration of the Nigerian people and economy. The paper is organized as follows: Introduction; Literature and Theoretical issues; Political and Economic foundation of poverty in Nigeria; Corruption; Unemployment; Gender inequality:globalization and Conclusion

Curbing Maladministration in Nigeria Public Service: the Role of Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct

    Get PDF
There are indications that not only will public administration be further removed from those it is intended to serve, but also that more administration is likely to mean correspondingly more maladministration. This paper is titled Curbing Maladministration in Nigeria Public Service: The Role of Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct. The objective of the paper was to examine the interplay of code of ethics and code of conduct in curbing maladministration in Nigeria Public Service. The paper argues that the more code of conducts is applied in practice, the more ethics codes curb maladministration in public service. The paper adopted content analysis of secondary sources of data and also analyzed primary data. The population of the study was 456 and Rogger Wimmer online sample size calculator was applied to derive a sample size of 209. Structured questionnaire was administered to the 209 respondents. The review of literature was anchored on the theory of deontological ethics. The paper observed that there is high disregard of codes of ethics and code of conduct hence no reduction of maladministration but their concurrent proper implementation will reduce maladministration in the public service in Nigeria. It is therefore the position of the paper that both codes will become more effective only if they are adopted and implemented in combination with other anti maladministration tools and made part of a learning process that requires training. The paper therefore recommended among others that it is high time the codes and other prescripts that encourage ethical behaviour and professionalism are legislated so that they are enforceable. &nbsp

Anti-Reductionist Theories of Mind and the Philosophy of Mind and Body

    Get PDF
The Cartesian model of mind slots behaviours expressive of our thoughts and feelings into the same category with their automatic counterparts. Yet, in contrast to the body’s involuntary and automatic behaviours, “shared perspectives on the world” empower us to recognize the human body as expressing the subject’s viewpoint on the world; a recognition that is not only about voluntariness and expressivity but also about the embodied nature of human behaviour: feeling, belief, action, and thought. Reasons as explaining behaviour have their roots in behaviour understood and explained in this embodied way. In consequence, it may be the case that it is because we have this “mode of embodiment” that we are subjects whose feelings and thoughts come from experience, represent a point of view on the world, and provide reasons for behaviour (Burwood, 157.

Flooding and Erosion in Rivers State: A review of Environmental Laws and Policies for Sustainable Development

    Get PDF
Floods are both man-made and natural occurrences. Sadly, the impact of flooding and erosion significantly impacts the environment and the livelihoods of people. Floods and erosion that killed some of the most people and destroyed properties recorded in Nigeria were caused directly by human actions exacerbating climate change. There are laws and policies that are in place to provide the framework to guide human excesses and for mitigating floods and erosion; however, considerable attention has yet to be given to review to what extent these laws and policies have been implemented. Thus, the article discusses Rivers State\u27s existing environmental laws and policies regarding flooding and erosion. The failure to implement and adhere to the relevant environmental laws has resulted in many floods and erosion in Rivers State. Hence, the relevant state actors need to demonstrate political will by providing the resources and facilities that facilitate the sustainable implementation of environmental laws and policies to curb server flooding and erosion in River State. &nbsp

Corruption is a cancer that impedes any society from fair and equitable distribution of resources and it leads to lack of accountability, credible leadership, political and socio-economic development. The persistent effort by the press to fight political corruption in Nigeria electoral process requires concerted efforts by all to make it a success. Starting from the colonial rules in Nigeria politics, the Nigerian journalists had played a prominent role in not only setting the agenda for the citizens but also carrying out diverse campaigns which are geared towards curbing the menace of political corruption. The research method adopted for this study is the content analysis The study revealed that the print media is not entirely effective in campaigning against political corruption in Nigeria electoral. It observed that media ownership influence still hinders effective reportage of corrupt practice in our polity, and so recommends that the print media owners who own newspapers should hand off control of their media organizations once they join partisan politics

Improving Signal Reception In 4g Network Using Channel Equalizer

    Get PDF
The efficiency of signal reception in 4G networks is critical for ensuring reliable and high-quality communication. However, challenges such as signal fading, multipath interference, and noise significantly impact network performance. This research explores the potential of channel equalizers to improve signal reception in 4G networks. Channel equalizers mitigate distortions introduced by the communication channel by adapting to changing channel conditions and restoring the transmitted signal to its original form.  This study analyzes the effectiveness of equalization techniques such as linear equalizers, decision feedback equalizers, and adaptive equalizers in combating issues like inter-symbol interference (ISI) and multipath fading. Using MATLAB-based simulations and real-world signal analysis, the performance of various equalization algorithms is evaluated in terms of metrics such as bit error rate (BER), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and throughput.  Results demonstrate that the implementation of adaptive equalizers, particularly those using least mean squares (LMS) or recursive least squares (RLS) algorithms, significantly enhances the robustness of 4G signal reception in diverse network conditions. This research concludes by recommending the integration of advanced channel equalizers into 4G network infrastructures to optimize performance and pave the way for smoother transitions to next-generation technologies like 5G
