Background: Groundwater is a vital source of drinking water, especially in developing regions. However, its quality is increasingly compromised by contamination from nearby landfill sites. Objective: This study assessed the physicochemical characteristics and heavy metal concentrations in groundwater around the Ido-Osun landfill, located in Osogbo Local Government Area, Osun State, Nigeria. Methodology: Groundwater samples were collected and analysed using standard procedures. Physicochemical parameters were measured, and heavy metals were quantified using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry after acid digestion. Results were compared against World Health Organization (WHO) and Nigerian Standards for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) guidelines. The Water Quality Index (WQI) was computed to provide an integrated assessment of water safety. Results: While most physicochemical parameters fell within acceptable limits, elevated levels of total dissolved solids (TDS: 429.8 mg/L) and nitrate (NO₃⁻: 37.46 mg/L) were recorded in some samples. Heavy metal analysis revealed concerning concentrations of lead (Pb: 0.03 mg/L), chromium (Cr: 0.24 mg/L), and copper (Cu: 0.16 mg/L). The calculated WQI was 358.84, placing the groundwater in the "extremely poor" category. This classification indicates that the water is unfit for drinking without significant treatment, posing immediate health risks. The WQI integrates various water quality parameters into a single value, and such a high score signals serious contamination affecting the overall usability of the water source. The health risk assessment further revealed a high non-carcinogenic hazard index (HI: 29.88), driven mainly by lead exposure (HQ: 29.25), far surpassing the safety threshold of 1. Carcinogenic risk values for lead (0.00057) and chromium (0.00027) also exceeded the USEPA’s acceptable range (1.0 × 10⁻⁶ to 1.0 × 10⁻⁴), indicating a potential lifetime cancer risk. Conclusion: The presence of elevated lead and chromium, along with a critically high WQI, underscores the urgent threat posed by the landfill to groundwater quality and public health. Immediate remediation strategies, consistent groundwater monitoring, and improved waste management practices are essential to prevent long-term health consequences for nearby communities

    No full text
Considering the modern realities and the need to promote interfaith relations, which would in turn engender peaceful coexistence among people of various faiths, tribes, and cultures, this paper explored the permissibility of Muslims participating in funeral rites of a non-Muslim without compromising the fundamental Islamic principles, most especially as clearly spelt out in the Qur’an and Sunnah. Some of these non-Muslim burial rites, inter alia, are filing past a dead non-Muslim lying in state, following the corpse to the cemetery, entering the church, etc.  The paper scrutinized the article previously released by the lead author as the Head of the Da\u27wah Office and Chief Missioner of  Nasrul-Lahi-l-fatih Society (NASFAT), employing qualitative methods (textual analysis) and MIA (Meaning, Implication, and Application) analysis traced to Sheikh Ahmad Lemu (RA) to analyse key relevant texts. The findings show that, apart from the clear textual prohibition of praying for a dead non-Muslim, there is no clear evidence against other rites, rather there are hadiths permitting some aspects such as following the corpse following the corpse to the grave yard, burying the body and paying condolences visit to the family. In conclusion, while the Islamic principles of fostering family, neighborhood and societal harmony permits Muslims to participates in certain aspects of Christian burial rites, a Muslim must not transgress to the prohibited acts such as praying for or on the corpse

    Get PDF
Societies need political institutions with governance structures to achieve stability and ensure justice for societal progress. The research analysed Arab-Islamic political institutions and governance through Islamic principles drawn from teachings and Arab political traditions to resolve modern structural conflicts with their original political ideals in Islamic law and Arab historical contexts, especially within Muslim-majority states struggling with governance breakdowns. Textual analysis of Islamic primary resources composed of the Qur\u27an and Hadith together with traditional Islamic legal and political concepts formed the research method. The study examined historical governance during the time of Rightly Guided Caliphs together with modern political systems. Islamic governance requires three fundamental elements which include Shūrah for consultation and \u27Adl for justice together with accountability for governance. The Quranic verse Q3:159 says "And consult them in all affairs" which shows how participatory governance matters and how the Shūrah concept matches democratic principles. The early Caliphates showed an example of transparent ethical leadership which remains relevant today for dealing with modern governance issues. Modern political systems can improve their operations by implementing the Arab-Islamic principles of multilateral input and moral leadership establishment according to the research findings. Shūrah as an inclusive governance system needs improvement together with increased leader accountability and adoption of Islamic ethical values for public institution corruption reduction and political institution trust enhancement. The structure offers a foundation for cultural governance transformation in Muslim-majority governance systems.KeywordsArab-Islamic perspective, concept of Shūrah, governance, political institutions, Qur\u27an and Hadit

    No full text
Terrorism has been a cankerworm inflicting pains on all and sundry across the universe. The innocent civilians have been at the receiving end. The ugly situation is not an exception in Nigeria. Hence, the Nigerian legal regime criminalises the act of terrorism and the search for permanent preventive measure culminates into amnesty grant to terrorists in Nigeria. Despite a number of amnesty grants to the terrorists in the country, it has not led to prevention due to incessant unexpected attacks by the terrorists. This thus poists this study to look beyond the Nigerian legal regime of amnesty grant and venture into the position under Shari’ah jurisprudence regarding combating terrorism vide amnesty grant with a systematic comparison with the Nigerian legal regime. The study adopts purely the doctrinal method of legal research and finds that the grant of amnesty to terrorists under Shari’ah jurisprudence is conditioned upon genuine repentance on the part of the terrorists prior to their arrest and non-commission of murder during the previous act of terrorism which conditions are absent in the Nigerian legal regime. The study thus recommends the Shari’ah jurisprudential conditional approach to Nigerian government.
