Beyond Quoting the Ancients: Integrating Critical Baḥth into Naql-Based Research in Islamic Studies

    No full text
Islamic Studies has long been characterized by a deep reverence for naql—the faithful transmission of Qurʾānic teachings, Prophetic traditions, and classical scholarly opinions. While this commitment to preservation safeguards the integrity of revelation, it often results in research that privileges compilation and citation over analytical discovery. This study, titled “Beyond Quoting the Ancients: Integrating Critical Baḥth into Naql-Based Research,” investigates how the dominance of naql in Islamic scholarship has shaped research practices and limited methodological innovation within Nigerian universities. Using a mixed-method research design, the study combined quantitative surveys, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis of undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Ibadan. The data were analyzed thematically and statistically to identify trends in students’ understanding and application of naql and baḥth, as well as the implications for employability and academic relevance. Findings reveal that over two-thirds of research projects are naql-based, with minimal integration of analytical or empirical tools. While naql remains essential for preserving authenticity, its dominance constrains intellectual creativity and limits the development of transferable skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. The paper draws on classical Islamic epistemology and modern research theory to propose a balanced framework that integrates baḥth—critical investigation—into naql-based methodologies. It argues that embedding hypothesis-driven inquiry, interdisciplinary perspectives, and digital humanities tools can revitalize Islamic Studies research without compromising its textual and spiritual foundations. By reuniting transmission with investigation, Islamic scholarship can reclaim the spirit of ijtihād and position itself as both authentic and relevant in addressing contemporary intellectual and societal challenges

    No full text
This paper examines the integration of indigenous artistic practices into Nigeria’s Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA) curriculum as a pathway to environmental and socio-economic sustainability. Drawing on curriculum theory, indigenous knowledge systems, and cultural sustainability frameworks, the study synthesizes Nigerian and international scholarship to explore the relevance of weaving, pottery, beadwork, dyeing, carving, and performance arts in contemporary education. The analysis identifies pedagogical approaches such as experiential learning, activity-based instruction, and community–school partnerships that can foster environmental stewardship, entrepreneurial skills, and cultural preservation. It also highlights systemic challenges, including limited teacher capacity, policy gaps, and inadequate funding. Recommendations include strengthening teacher training on indigenous arts pedagogy, embedding sustainability objectives in curriculum design, and fostering collaborations between the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), artists, and local communities. The paper argues that a culturally responsive, sustainability-oriented CCA curriculum can equip learners with skills for environmental care, economic self-reliance, and cultural identity maintenance

One of the key areas of human operations that AI has significantly impacted is education. Even though several studies have examined the dynamics of AI in varying educational parlance, the attitude, knowledge, and awareness of AI platforms by university academics in Nigeria is yet to be sufficiently empirically examined. It is in an effort to bridge the palpable gap in existing literatures on AI that necessitated this study. Thus, this study examined knowledge, awareness, attitude and utilization of artificial intelligence platforms by academics in University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The research employed the use of survey design and utilized quantitative approach for data collection and analysis. A multistage sampling design was employed to administer a self-developed questionnaire to 210 academics (lecturers) at the University of Ilorin. In analysing the questionnaire, data analytical procedure of frequency and percentages were used as descriptive statistics while regression analysis was used as inferential statistical tool to test the research hypotheses. The study found out, that academics at the University of Ilorin generally hold positive attitudes towards the adoption of AI in their research and teaching activities. Also, that academics at the University of Ilorin are generally aware of AI platforms, and those with higher familiarity tend to place greater importance on AI literacy. The study recommends that universities should implement regular training programs focused on AI technologies relevant to academic work and invest in the necessary infrastructure to support AI adoption, including reliable internet access, advanced AI tools, and continuous technical support

    No full text
Lola Shoneyin’s The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives explores the complexities of polygamy in a patriarchal Nigerian society, subverts conventional gender norms by presenting female characters who challenge male authority and assert agency within the confines of a traditionally male-dominated household. Therefore, this study investigates the theme of gender reversal in contemporary African fiction through a feminist analysis of Lola Shoneyin’s The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives. It employs feminist literary theory to examine how Shoneyin reconstructs the dynamics of power, sexuality, and identity among women in a polygamous setting. The study foregrounds how the wives, particularly Bolanle, negotiate personal autonomy and resist socio-cultural expectations, thereby destabilizing patriarchal structures from within. Through close textual analysis, the work highlights the novel’s critique of gendered oppression and its advocacy for female empowerment. Therefore, this study positions The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives as a significant contribution to contemporary African feminist literature, where gender roles are not only questioned but actively redefined

    No full text
This work explored SFG features (the structural and interpersonal features) of popular Nigerian language (slang) in 2022. The broad aim was to discover the predominant ideas and moods utilized by way of the stylistic and communicative patterns which determine the slang usage in the Nigerian language. Recent and widely circulated slang words were purposively selected from Tribune Online and Channels Television. SFG categories of unit and mood were employed to analyze the slangs so as to reveal their structural forms and functional roles. The results show that all the four units of analysis (word, phrase, clause, and sentence) were identified with the sentence structures predominating and  declarative, imperative, and exclamatory mood types being the most frequent ones. Instances of interrogatives were less, pointing to a style that favoured assertive and performative expressions over dialogic ones. The research finds that Nigerian slang depends on brevity, directness, and performativity for the slangs to become not only recognizable catchphrases that instil identity, co-operation, and common cultural experience but also to be used repeatedly

Nigeria, as the largest economy in Africa, grapples with systemic corruption and governance failure, providing fertile ground for criminal activities like kidnapping for ransom. This study examines the nexus between corruption, governance failure, and the surge in kidnapping, employing a qualitative research method. Using crime data extracted from media reports, trends and patterns of ransom kidnappings are analyzed. The findings reveal a notable increase in the commercialization of kidnapping spurred by various socio-economic and political factors including poverty, unemployment, poor security architecture, lax law enforcement, and corruption. This proliferation of ransom kidnappings exacerbates insecurity, posing threats to personal safety and economic stability. The study advocates for holistic reforms to combat corruption and enhance good governance in Nigeria. Strategies recommended among others include the overhauling of the nations’ security architecture, bolstering of law enforcement, transparency and accountability in governance, engagement of traditional rulers in governance and collaboration between governmental bodies and civil societies

Copyright is a form of intellectual property that grants the originator the exclusive right to its creativity such as books, scripts, films, records etc. The significance of the copyright cannot be underestimated; as it allows the owner of the right to enjoy certain benefits such as legal protection, royalties and licensing rights. Under the Nigerian Copyright Act 2022, film productions are accorded such rights while a Board so established is empowered by provisions of the National Film and Video Censors Board Act (NFVCBA) to censor and classify such film productions. It is disheartening, however, to observe that contents of many films produced in Nigeria, which is the second largest films producing nation in the world, are immoral and this has adverse effects on the country’s society especially the youths who are the majority viewers. Thus, this paper aims to investigate the application of Islamic law standards to copyright for cinematographic productions under the Nigerian legal instruments. Overall, this paper seeks to better understand the Islamic law standards when it comes to copyright for cinematography and how it should be balanced to promote creativity and ensure morality. The paper relies on content analysis of both primary ie the Qur’an, the Hadith, the Nigerian Copyright Act 2022 and NFVCBA; and secondary sources of information like articles in journals, internet materials, text books of Islamic jurisprudence and others. It is hoped that the findings of this paper will contribute to the development of an effective and equitable copyright law framework in Nigeria and beyond. The paper concludes by recommending that the Nigerian Copyright Act should be amended and categorically make provision for ineligibility of immoral cinematography copyright. The paper equally recommended that the Nigerian film productions industry (Nollywood) should borrow leaf from Indian film productions industry (Bollywood) in displaying on the screen words of caution and warning whenever scenes depicting harmful or unethical behavior, such as cigarette smoking, child abuse, women victimization, are being showed.

    Get PDF
Dispute and conflict are though not desired, part of human existence, the very co-existence of man is a factor for the existence of dispute. The dispute phenomenon is more likely where persons of different ideology, background and orientation desired to live as conjugal partners bounded by marriage. The aforementioned factors will definitely create conflict of interest, life view and ultimately cause dispute. Despite the inevitability of a dispute situation in marital life, the objective of every society and legal system is to ensure continuous cordiality, bliss and happiness between couples. This assertion is  more true of Islamic law. Thus, various legal systems have put mechanisms in place to resolve marital disputes. Islamic law recommends and places emphasizes on ADR over litigation in solving marital disputes, the law regards litigation as a last resort option. In Nigeria, the northern region has generally taken the front in the application of Islamic law including marital dispute resolution. The western region including Osun state is still up-coming in this regard. The retarding situation is due to factors such as colonial history amongst others. However, Osun state has seized the opportunity of its significant Muslim population to explore Islamic marital dispute resolution mechanisms. This paper adopted empirical methodology to examine the operation of the dispute resolution mechanisms especially the ADR options, their effectiveness in solving marital disputes in the state as well uncover the challenges facing the system

    No full text
Background: Testicular torsion is a urological emergency inducing irreversible ischemia and loss of organs. The damage intensity depends on the twisting severity and ischemia duration. Its treatment is surgery, after which 65% of its patients can still suffer from testes atrophy. Objectives: The study investigated the effect of D-ribose L-cysteine on the cytoarchitecture of the testes after Torsion-detorsion injury. The study also investigated the effect of D-ribose L-cysteine on serum Malondialdehyde, Glutathione and Albumin after Torsion-detorsion injury. Methodology: Thirty (30) adult male Wistar rats of about 180-220 g were procured from animal holding and divided into six groups (n=5). Group 1: control group, Group 2: negative control group and torsioned for one hour. Groups 3 to 6: treated groups induced with torsion for one hour and treated with Riboceine for different hours (Group 3: treated with Riboceine for one hour, Group 4: treated with Riboceine for one hour thirty minutes, Group 5: treated with Riboceine for two hours and Group 6: treated with Riboceine for two hours thirty minutes). All the experimental rats across the groups were sacrificed to determine the effect of torsion-detorsion injuries and check for ameliorative roles of d-ribose l-cysteine on the testes using biochemical tests (Serum Malondialdehyde, Glutathione and Albumin) and histological techniques (routine hematoxylin and eosin stain). Results: Torsion-detorsion increased serum Malondialdehyde levels causing accumulation of oxidative stress, decreased serum Glutathione and Albumin levels, and some testicular injuries such as damage to seminiferous tubules, interstitial oedema, and vascular congestion. The D-ribose L-cysteine reserved testicular atrophy following torsion detorsion injury. Conclusion/ Recommendations: D-ribose L-cysteine ameliorates increased serum Malondialdehyde an indicator of oxidative stress which affects sperm quality and function. Glutathione has a stimulatory effect on the male reproductive hormones and potentially boosts male fertility. This study recommends oral intake of D-ribose L-cysteine for restoring the cytoarchitecture of the testes after torsion-detorsion injury and increasing sperm quality.   &nbsp
