OVER-RELIANCE ON DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE: A CRITICAL STUDY OF NIGERIA\u27S UNDERUTILISED MATRIMONIAL RELIEFS WITH EMPIRICAL FOCUS ON OSUN STATE

    Get PDF
This study investigates the persistent over-reliance on dissolution of marriage as the primary matrimonial relief in Nigeria, despite the availability of alternative remedies under the Matrimonial Causes Act, including judicial separation, restitution of conjugal rights, and nullity of marriage. Using Osun State as an empirical focal point, the research adopts a socio-legal and qualitative approach, combining legal doctrinal analysis with data obtained through structured questionnaires administered to legal practitioners, litigants, and members of the public. The findings reveal that while the legal framework supports a diversity of matrimonial reliefs, public awareness and actual utilisation remain significantly skewed toward dissolution of marriage. Respondents overwhelmingly reported either ignorance of or lack of encouragement by lawyers to pursue alternatives, reinforcing dissolution of marriage as the default remedy. The study concludes that the dominance of dissolution of marriage is not due to legal inadequacies, but rather to informational, professional, and socio-cultural factors. It recommends public sensitisation, legal education reform, and proactive engagement by legal practitioners to promote a more balanced application of matrimonial remedies

    No full text
Background: The impact of extreme weather conditions on outdoor sports performance among athletes has drawn the attention of the relevant bodies, especially now that climate change is wreaking havoc across sectors. Objectives: The study examines how high temperatures and heavy rainfall affect team tactics, athlete performance, and overall well-being in Kwara State, Nigeria. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey approach was employed. The target population included outdoor sports athletes, including footballers, basketballers and athletes. Results: The findings reveal a significant correlation between extreme heat and decreased athletic performance. A correlation analysis (r = -0.62, p < 0.05) showed that higher temperatures were strongly associated with reduced endurance, speed, and cognitive decision-making during outdoor sports. Similarly, heavy rainfall was moderately correlated (r = -0.45, p < 0.05) with reduced coordination and agility, particularly in team sports like football and basketball. Coaches reported adjusting training schedules/ times and emphasising tactical changes, such as slowing the game pace and enhancing teamwork to conserve energy. In contrast, rainy conditions prompted athletes to adopt conservative play styles, focusing on safety and injury prevention. Conclusion/ Recommendation: The study contributes to understanding how climate conditions impact sports performance and provides recommendations for coaches and organisations to better equip athletes for competing in extreme environments. By fostering awareness and implementing targeted strategies, stakeholders can enhance athlete performance, safety, and well-being in changing weather patterns

    8. Inter-professional Collaboration as a Cornerstone of Healthcare: A Review.

    No full text
Background: The word "collaboration" is utilised in all facets of health care, including clinical practice, education, and research. Inter-professional collaboration involves shared responsibility and interdependence within a team that shares mutual respect, dedication, and common goals. The healthcare workforce of any nation is regarded as an essential component of the country\u27s functioning health system, where team collaboration can improve patient outcomes. If inter-professional rivalry and conflict exist among health workers, especially in Nigeria, it can result in poor health delivery to the population. Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the importance of inter-professional collaboration, the essentially required competencies, and the factors that could contribute to and hinder effective collaboration for general consideration and amendments to foster the necessary collaboration as enshrined in the sustainable development goal (SDG) 17 of the United Nations Methodology: This paper reviewed previous studies on the same or similar topics using the topic to this study to gather the relevant information. Conclusion/ Recommendations: Evident rivalry affects intra- and inter-sectoral patient-care collaboration, with recently witnessed and increased complexity in the healthcare sector; a diverse workforce\u27s cooperation—including physicians, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals—is required to reduce this. Various health professionals must practice inter-professional collaboration in the healthcare industry to provide high-quality care to patients, families, and caregivers

    15. Factors Influencing the Use of Healthcare Services across Underserved Communities in Two Niger Delta Regions of Nigeria

    No full text
Background: The healthcare landscape in the Niger Delta is marred by complex and persistent barriers, including poverty, geographic isolation, cultural beliefs, environmental hazards, and inadequate healthcare services. These factors collectively contribute to low healthcare availability for utilisation among women and children in the region, impeding efforts to improve maternal and child health and achieve universal healthcare access in Nigeria. Methodology: This study employs a descriptive research design, gathering data from 3,188 females as respondents in Delta and Edo States through household copies of the questionnaire. Results: The analysis, utilizing KoboToolbox and SPSS, reveals that 53.7% of respondents consulted a healthcare provider or traditional healer in the past 12 weeks, while 46.3% did not. Major barriers identified include long waiting times (28.6%), lack of trained personnel (6.1%), and high costs (4.1%). Proximity to healthcare facilities significantly influences utilisation, with those living within 15-30 minutes (trek or drive) of a health centre more likely to seek care than those living far away. Conclusion/recommendation: The findings underscore the need for systemic reforms to enhance healthcare access by addressing long waiting times, improving facility conditions, and increasing the availability of trained healthcare workers. Expanding healthcare infrastructure and transportation options for remote areas could improve healthcare utilisation and outcomes.   &nbsp

Background: Consumers of fish food and products have become increasingly concerned with their health and are curious about the safety of the fish they consume. Senna occidentalis has proven to be medicinal and toxic. However, the leaves of S. occidentalis are among the medicinal and poisonous plants whose toxicity on fish has yet to be studied extensively. Objective: This study examined the qualitative and quantitative phytochemical profile of S. occidentalis for the biochemical activities of Clarias gariepinus exposed to its ethanol leaf extract. Methodology: A total of one hundred and twenty (120) juveniles of C. gariepinus were acclimatised for two weeks and randomly distributed into 12 plastic tanks of 35-litre capacity. Phytochemical screening and biochemical analysis of the experimental fish were carried out. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess the data, and the distinction between the treatment groups was found using the least significant difference (LSD) at a 0.05 statistical level. Results: The ethanol leaf extract of S. occidentalis phytochemical analysis revealed that the plant\u27s leaf qualitatively contained different bioactive substances such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, glycosides, and steroids. For the biochemical parameters (Total Protein, Albumin, Globulin, AST (aspartate aminotransferase), ALP (alkaline phosphatase), ALT (alanine transaminase), and GGT (gammaglutamyl transferase) analyses to know the potency of S. occidentalis ethanol leaf extract on C. gariepinus juveniles, the results indicated that the Total Protein (5.6 – 5.1 g/dl) values decreased with increased concentration of S. occidentalis ethanol leaf extract. Conclusion: The findings revealed biochemical alterations and damage in the organ of C. gariepinus. The higher the S. occidentalis ethanol leaf extract concentration, the higher the observed damage. Recommendations: The study suggests the usage of another solvent and methods of extraction

L’OPPRESSION FÉMININE DE LA POLYGAMIE DANS LE CONTEXT SOCIO-CULTUREL DU RȎLE DES FEMMES DANS CELLES QUI ATTENDENT DE FATOU DIOME

    Get PDF
From a feminist and socio-cultural perspective, this study examines the roles of women in Fatou Diome’s novel Celles qui attendant2010)  ( Woman who waits , and the impact these roles have on  the women and their environment. Feminism is a universal concept, but it can have   different meanings depending on geographical, cultural, religious, and historical factors.  This paper discusses a specific feminist approach, namely African sub-Saharan feminism, by comparing it with Western feminist theory, specifically that of Simone de Beauvoir.  With the aim of understanding which feminist ideas are reflected in the novel, the study   compares and analyses specific situations in socio-cultural contexts, in which each of the   four female protagonists finds themselves. The main questions addressed in the study are:  how do the traditional roles of women described in Celles qui attendent (2010) affect the women themselves and the community in which they find themselves? How are feminist ideas expressed in the novel? The study reveals that in the struggle to maintain the most existential life (in a generally poor environment), the protagonists fight daily to improve the situation of their families. In this struggle, the women show a strength that in many cases exceeds that of the men in the novel. Therefore, for the four protagonists in Celles  quiattendent (2010), the feminist struggle is not about liberation from male domination,  but rather about subsisting theirs lives with dignity

العلاقة بين محتوى القصة وخطابها: دراسة سردية للمسافة في الرواية "آمال واقعية" لجامع أبيولا Relationship between the story and its narrative: A narratological study of distance in Jamiu Abiola’s “\u27Āmāl wāqiʿiyyah”

The technique of narrative distance is considered an important feature artistic beauty in narrative criticism. It, according to structuralist narratologists, refers to the fact that if the narrator, when representing the story, completely mediates between the readers and the story characters by presenting a filtered story information and professionally taking it up reducing it to event, readers will get minimum information and a high reflection of narrator’s personality. On the other hand, if he represents characters’ actions and speeches in a vivid and detailed manner which allows readers to receive characters interactions direct, they will get more story information and little narrator’s presence. This paper aimed at revealing how story information, which readers receive from the text of Jamiu Abiola’s novel “\u27Āmāl wāqiʿiyyah,” is presented by analyzing the use of the technique of distance based on descriptive analytical method following Gerard Genette’s theory, especially the technique of distance. The study ended with two discoveries. One, this novel’s narrator interchangeably uses the four Genettean distance types, which reduces reading monotony and heightens interest (due to inability to predict which type comes next) and two, reported speech is dominant. This story representation technique normally allows the readers to directly see characters’ interaction as if on stage and receive full and reliable story information making them eligible to share these characters’ feelings with them and be well-informed enough to deduce lessons from the story

Self-Efficacy and Gender as Correlates of Senior Secondary School Students’ Academic Achievement in English Reading Comprehension in Ondo State, Nigeria

    Get PDF
This study examined self-efficacy and gender as correlates of senior secondary school students’ academic achievement in English reading comprehension in Ondo State, Nigeria. Employing a descriptive correlational design, data were collected from Senior Secondary 2 (SS2) students using a self-efficacy questionnaire and a standardised reading comprehension achievement test. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed. In the first stage, the state was divided into three strata based on its senatorial districts. In the second stage, one local government area was randomly selected from each stratum. At the third stage, one public secondary school was purposively selected from each of the identified local government areas, resulting in a total of three schools. At the end of the selection, 76 students—38 males and 38 females—participated in the study.  Analysis through SPSS software included t-tests analysis to assess the impact of self-efficacy on reading comprehension and to explore gender differences in performance. Findings show a significant relationship between self-efficacy and academic achievement. Additionally, while female students scored slightly higher than their male counterparts, the difference was not statistically significant. These findings emphasize the importance of self-efficacy in student achievement. Consequently, it is recommended that teachers incorporate strategies to enhance students’ self-efficacy, such as positive reinforcement, setting achievable goals, and creating opportunities for mastery experiences to support better academic achievement

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF FRENCH LANGUAGE AT TASUED: A BLESSING OR A CURSE

    No full text
There is no gainsaying in the fact that the world is gradually becoming a global village by leveraging the use of information and communication technology (ICT), machine translation (MT) or also artificial intelligence (AI) in the teaching and learning of French as a foreign language (FFL). French language learning has been in existence for almost two decades at the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) as language facilitators have been making use of one e-learning platform or the other to foster the teaching of this target language. In this presentation, the researchers evaluate the effectiveness in the incorporation of AI in the teaching and learning of French whether it enhances the academic performance of the learners or it constitutes an impediment towards the growth and development in the acquisition of the target language. Gemini AI chatbot which is a subset of artificial intelligence will be used as methodology to examine the accuracy of some English expressions into French both written and oral expressions. Selinker’s interlanguage theory will aid the interpretation of the results emanating from the machine translation to verify whether it will be beneficial to learners or prevent them from attaining proficiency in the target language. Efforts will be made to proffer some recommendations towards the pragmatic usage of the new technology in a French classroom settings.

An Appraisal of the Contributions and Challenges of Islāmic Institutions in Curbing Crime among Muslim Youth in Lagos State, Nigeria

    No full text
The phenomenon of youth crime challenges societal development, prompting various institutions to keep addressing it. In Lagos Stat, Nigeria, Islamic institutions have been tackling youth crime among Muslims. However, their efforts and challenges have not received thorough academic examination. Based on the concepts of Maqasidu-s-Shari\u27ah, Tazkiyyah, and Amr bil Ma\u27ruf wa Nahy anil Munkar, this paper appraised the contributions and challenges of Islamic institutions in curbing crime among Muslim youth in Lagos State. The study adopted a qualitative research methodology. A content analysis was used to analyse the data sourced from semi-structured interviews with key informants including Islamic clerics/scholars and administrators in Lagos State, and relevant literature/documents. The study found that Islamic institutions\u27 contributions in combating crimes among Muslim youth in Lagos State are experiencing a dichotomy. On the one hand, these institutions have proven to have the potential to substantially reduce the problem of youth crime among Muslims through avenues such as Islamic moral education, welfare programmes, and sensitisation against involvement in criminal activities. On the other hand, this potential is affected by challenges such as the non-application of Shari\u27ah, the poor attitude of government towards Islamic education, and Islamophobia tendencies. The study recommended and concluded that, among other things, there is a serious need for a persistent promotion of Islamic education and the commonalities between Christianity ad Islam, in the areas of moral values and criminal justice, so as to allow Islamic institutions robustly and efficiently contribute to the development of Lagos State by fighting youth crime  among Muslims.
