Correlate of Available Facilities and Secondary School Students Academic Performance in Osun State
No full textThe study assessed correlate of available facilities and secondary school students in Osun State and also to find out the effects of available facilities in secondary schools on students academic performance. Two research questions and two hypotheses were generated for the study. The study focused on students and teachers of selected secondary schools in Osun state. Samples of 60 students from senior secondary one, 50 students from senior secondary school two and 65 from senior secondary three making a total of 175 students and seventy five (75) teachers making a total of two hundred and fifty (250) respondents were sampled. A structured questionnaire titled ?correlate of available facilities and secondary school students‘academic performance in Osun state‘was duly validated and used for data collection. Data collected through the research instruments were analyzed using descriptive analysis of frequency counts and its percentages. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance.The study recommended that: quality and functional facilities should be made available at our secondary schools in order to enhance the academic performance of secondary school students in Osun state. Education authorities in the state and stakeholders in the education sector should provide non available ones among school facilities in order to boost students‘ performance

Girl-Child Education in Science, Technical and Vocational Programmes: An Imperative for Economy Security
Get PDFThis study examined the enrolment of girl-child in Science, Technical and Vocational Education (STVE) for economy security. Survey approach was adopted for the study. Samples comprised of all girls in Junior and Senior Secondary Schools in 2014/2015 academic session in Gombe State. Two instruments were used, Interview and Annual School census report for data collection. The data collected were analyzed through frequency count and simple percentage. The findings revealed that 74,467 students enrolled into Junior Secondary Schools and only 875 (1.2%) were girls of ages 12-14 in Vocational Schools. Also, the enrolment of students in Senior Secondary Schools was 52,581and only 1,856 (3.5%) were girls of ages 15-17 in Science and Technical Schools. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that the girl-child be given the needed attention and encouragement to enroll in STVE Programmes. The skills acquired from the School will help to provide them with the required strategies for job-creation and poverty eradication – through self-employment, employment in the labour market and pursuance of career in Science, Technology and Mathematics fields, which in turn, will improve the local and global economy

Assessing Pre-school Teachers Knowledge and Utilisation of Observational Assessment Tools in Preschool: Implication for Higher Education
Get PDFThe assessment of pre-school children‘s performance has become a central focus of efforts toreform education as it is observed that teachers‘ assessment practices focused mainly on xchildren‘s cognitive domain making use of standardised instruments. The study assessed preschool teachers‘ knowledge and utilisation of observational assessment tools in pre-school and their implication for higher education. The research design for this study was descriptive survey design with a total of 80 pre-school teachers and 50 lecturers of higher education as the population of the study. Three research questions were answered. The data collected was analysed using mean and standard deviation analysis. The result showed that pre-schoolteacher level of knowledge of observational assessment tools was moderate ( x =12.05; SD = 3.01), the level of pre-school teachers utilisation of observational tools were high( =60.60; SD = 6.53) while lecturers‘ utilisation of observational tool was high (=40.52;SD = 10.16). Based on the results of findings from the study it is recommended that lecturers teaching the pre-school teachers should desist from lecturing them instead of teach-ing them and also encourage them to utilise Observational Assessment tools instead of the stringent conventional cognitive assessment methods. Government should enact policies that will not be in a variance with global views. Pre-school teachers should also ensure that they record all observations and activities that take place during the Childrens‘ stay at school by making use of available Observational Assessment tools such as the Anecdotal record
Tackling Nigeria Security Challenges for Socio-Economic Development and Sustainability
Get PDFNigeria which is often referred to as the ?Giant of Africa? and ?a land flowing with milk and honey? because of her richly blessed array of human, material and natural resources is now becoming a shadow of herself because of the present predicament of plethora of contemporary security challenges ranging but not limited to inadequate security man-power, obsolete/ substandard security equipments, poor funding of security operations and diversion of funds, porous borders, diverse ethnic culture, religious intolerance among others. This paper chronicles the various lapses of security challenges in Nigeria and also gave some of the dire consequences on both the government and citizens alike. Some of these include cult-related activities, political assassination, pipeline/gas pipe vandalization, hostage takings, and kidnapping for monetary ransoms and gains, terrorism, youth restiveness, religious and ethnic riots, insurgency and militia attacks to mention but a few. All these had and still continue to affect Nigeria‘s socio-economic, educational and political development and sustainability. The paper concludes that security departments in Nigeria should be well funded, be given modern and sophisticated weapons and equipments, recruitment, training and re-training of security personnel, good remuneration and other welfare packages among others. It therefore recommends the formulation and effective implementation of policies and programmes to address some of the root causes of insecurity such as inequitable distribution of resources decayed infrastructure, poverty, and unemployment. Also, good governance, access to qualitative and affordable education and religious tolerance are recommended for Nigeria‘s sustainable development
Infrastructure and Economic Growth Nexus in Nigeria: A Macroeconometric Modelling Approach
Get PDFThis paper investigated the impact of infrastructure on economic growth inNigeria A multivariate model of simultaneous equations was deployed. Thepaper also utilised three-stage least squares technique to capture thetransmission channels through which infrastructure promotes growth. Theresearch covered 40 years (1970 to 2010). The finding shows thatinfrastructural investment has a significant impact on output of the economydirectly through its industrial output and indirectly through the output ofother sectors such as manufacturing, oil and other services. The agriculturalsector is however not affected by infrastructure. The results also show a bidirectional causal relationship between infrastructure and economic growth.The paper recommended increased investment in infrastructure. Also, thefinancing options for closing Nigeria’s infrastructure gaps should focus onbroadening the sources of finance and a better allocation of public resources.In this wise, the government should intensify the utilization of the public private-partnership (PPP) framework
